The favorites don't require many; a few others might have more than you think. Texas Longhorns (+2,000) If ... Quinn Ewers (or some other Texas QB) shows up on key plays. On first downs, Quinn Ewers ranked 19th in raw QBR in 2022. On third downs: 104th. In first quarters, Ewers ranked 46th. In fourth quarters: 97th. Ewers had promising moments, but he was dreadful on the most important downs and in the most important quarter. You could say the same thing about the Horns. They outscored opponents by 179 points in the first three quarters, got outscored by 12 in the fourth quarter and overtime and went 2-5 in one-score finishes. They dominated at times and aced the predictive ratings -- seventh in both FPI and SP+ -- but still went just 8-5. Was this a sample-size oddity? Can Ewers come through in key moments before he loses his job to either blue-chip freshman Arch Manning or spring star Maalik Murphy? If ... Sark does, too. While close-game records are typically unsustainable and can oscillate constantly, it does bear mentioning that Steve Sarkisian has lost 11 of his last 15 one-score games as a head coach. This goes higher up than Ewers on the org chart. If ... young running backs aren't a hindrance. Ewers' veteran receiving corps should be stellar, but the Horns will lack both Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson at running back. Can some combination of sophomores Jonathon Brooks and Jaydon Blue and blue-chip freshman Cedric Baxter Jr. provide a sufficient security blanket? If ... opponents move backward more. Texas leaped from 86th to 22nd in defensive SP+ last season, driven by excellent run pursuit and big-play prevention. But the Horns still ran into trouble on third and fourth downs because, while they were preventing efficiency, they weren't pushing opponents backward: They ranked 106th in sack rate and 102nd in stuff rate. Forcing second-and-8 is good; forcing second-and-12 is better.

I’m certainly not an expert, but you start to have those concerns when the guy is in his second season and hasn’t shown improvement. August 6, 20232 yr Stop trying to make Keilan a thing Sark. He’s a gadget play/jet sweep/special teams guy, not a lead back. Alamo Bowl proved that. This cracks me up. Your top two dudes sit. Your 3rd guy is less than 100%. The bowl game didn’t mean much in the bigger picture. Whoever else you have has not played in games. Now it’s an early season practice. The top dog is out. It’s a practice. Here’s a shocker. Even if Keilan is 3rd team, he’s likely getting meaningful snaps with the first unit. He’s earned them in productive moments, gadget plays or not, but Sark giving him an additional nod is ok too. And those gadget plays will be more productive if Keilan can diversify the plays he can run. So practice those. With the guys that’ll be on the field with him. Now, if he gets the majority of carries and averages 2.5 per carry in the season, we got a problem. Who gives a damn who technically starts the games. We need each guy put in places and situations to produce. No need to worry about who runs out first.

I'm not going to sit here and argue he's an All Big 12 caliber center or anything but he was the midpoint on the line last year. Hutson in particular was abysmal for most of the season, and Conner wasn't much better and isn't as good in pass pro as Majors. Campbell flashed but often looked lost (contrast to Hutson, who had less of an assignment issue and more of a physical readiness issue). My hope is that's cleaned up and Campbell earns a starting spot to add some juice to interior run blocking. Majors was always going to be a multi-year S&C project when projecting him to center, and you can live with that if you've got competent guard play and the rest of his game is solid (it largely is). If he ends up being the weak point of the OL this year, it will be a better unit because that means there's been tangible improvement at both guard spots.

I mean, I don't want to belabor the point or anything, but sometimes you want to make a joke, you put in a search term into PH, and instead of a tab name that gives you what you wanted, you instead get "not found," because sadly, there are no porn videos or images on PornHub for that particular proclivity. (Sigh.) But the joy of the World Wide Weeb is that all that shit is stored locally, so you just pull up the developer tools and modify where needed. Let's take this poor, innocent, unsuspecting website, for example. Oh, dear. This does not represent our little brother university well at all. We'll start with the tab title. Note: I'm doing this in Firefox, but Chrome/Edge/etc can do this just as well. Hmm, that's OK as a side joke, but it's cut off and hard to see. There we go. Note how I'm using the search bar to skip through the content more easily. You can also hover the mouse over different bits and they'll get highlighted on the page above, as you can see. Now, let's get that poll question fixed up. OK! Now the joke is getting a little thin. I still feel like more can be done about the tab title, though. Once you get the knack for it, you can modify the whole thing. Menu bars, text... if you're good at CSS and JavaScript, you can even change the way the page works. (Fun way to skip the blockers on paid articles, BTW.) A few more changes, and we end up with this lovely final product: themoreyouknow.gif Edited August 6, 20232 yr by Rimbo

August 6, 20232 yr Popular Post IT first week intel Spoiler After four straight days of practicing, Sunday’s schedule consists of recovery and meetings. IT asked about the Saturday night practice and for any other interesting notes our sources might have. Saturday’s team portion of the practice was again geared towards money down offense and defense with the defense doing well to get off the field. More AD Mitchell hype That written, the first person mentioned yet again was AD Mitchell. He’s a complete receiver to include his situational intelligence. He’s known for using his size to Moss guys, but he can also create space on the ground, sometimes due to being so savvy. His situational intelligence is high. Given his catch radius, ball skills, and apparent intelligence, he’s the most likely stick mover on 3rd down. Corner depth is strong The corners had a good day in coverage. Both Terrance Brooks and Malik Muhammad were mentioned. Our sources still feel like Brooks will start but all four of Ryan Watts, Gavin Holmes, Brooks and Muhammad will play a lot. Who finishes games will be more important than who starts them. Austin Jordan is still at Star and looks good, but Jaylon Guilbeau was singled out for making some plays. Two very talented X-factors look good early Jalen Catalon has really impressed. He’s not 40-yard dash fast but he’s football fast, “a blur.” He sees the play and goes. “Triggers like a madman.” All safeties are working at both boundary and field. Catalon profiles more to boundary but there’s a good chance he’ll see action at both positions. So far Texas is seeing the player who was healthy at Arkansas. Speaking of his athleticism “it’s still there” for Isaiah Neyor. He’s not as refined as a route runner as Mitchell but he may still be knocking off some rust. One thing’s for sure, he’s still big and fast. This is good to hear. We already knew his measured speed has returned. Offensive players rotating It sounds like Cole Hutson and DJ Campbell are getting pretty equal reps at right guard. Neto Umeozulu has received a few there as well but he’s still more of a left guard. The first week or so is for gauging what each player brings to the table. That’s most evident at running back where the coaches want to see if Jaydon Blue and Keilan Robinson can run it inside and if CJ Baxter can run it outside. Baxter is said to be a bit raw still but he’s big and fast to the point it won’t keep him from seeing the field. He’s the most likely short yardage back thanks to his size and strength. Confident Quinn Quarterback Quinn Ewers‘ demeanor is night and day different from last August. He’s much more comfortable as the face of the program. He’s much looser with teammates while still embracing his leadership position. Just as importantly, he’s more in sync with his receivers. Over the coming weeks we’ll learn by just how much.
