English Championship 2023/34

That's a hell of a long season.

Championship is a solid league but I'm not sure I can commit for 12 years.

I'm sure I'll watch some Leeds if TA sticks around.

It's all very strange. I know nothing about the other teams/players in the League. And It's going to take more effort/money/time to be a supporter this year.

I have taken a lot of things for granted the last 10 years.

I hope it's only a 1 year stay for Saints.

so first impressions of the Championship and following a club that has been relegated.

  • It a weird watch and will take some getting used to. I literally know nothing about the opponent they are playing. You don't recognize any opponent's players, you dont know who is the offensive threat, who is their jerk player for you to loathe, hard to muster up any animosity toward them other than you want your team to win. it is almost like watching a friendly.
  • you PL types are going to notice big rule changes this year
    • Going to be a lot of stoppage time added... in yesterday's Saints match there was 6 added minutes in the first half, 9 minutes in the second half.
    • yellow cards were given if more than 2 players crowded around a ref looking to foul grub.
    • no VAR is glorious -- oops PL still has it.
  • I am going to miss Peacock's PL coverage.. pregame, half time highlights, post game stuff, League news. No offerings like that for Championship watchers.. just watch the game and that is it.

QPR avoided relegation last season but Iikely just postponed the inevitable. 4-0 loss to Watford which was 1-0 in less than a minute and 4-0 at halftime.

Leeds United starting off their EFL Championship campaign down 2-0 against Cardiff at halftime while playing at home.Rumor has it that their English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 fans are frustrated with the board, as they currently have no Americans 🇺🇸 on the field to blame.

Sunderland continues to bring the lulz losing to Ipswich 2-1 at home.

They need a striker with Ross Stewart still out injured.

And to not pick up reds against recently promoted teams at home.

Hull helped out a lot of teams this past weekend.

Through 5 matches Preston is on top. Surprising.

so mid-season update on the Championship table.

  • Leicester on a record pace (59 points so far)
  • Southampton 5 points away 2nd place.
  • 2 points separates 7 teams from a playoff spot (6th place)
  • the 3 relegated PL teams all with good chance for being promoted back.
  • 22 matches left
  • FYI - all 24 teams play this Friday (3 of them on TV - ESPN+)

Don't call it a comeback but Wednesday have won 3 out of 5 and are getting close to being out of the danger zone. We might get some sweet sweet Steel City Derby action next year if they keep it up.

Chansiri is probably the worst owner in the Championship.

table update.

  • Leeds dropped points today, but still likely impossible to catch
  • the race for 2nd place is tight!
  • 5 clubs within 4 points of 6th place.
  • Coventry and Sunderland flip flop between the 6th and 10th places - in one week.

the top of the table has gotten considerably tighter in the last 3 weeks - 11 matches to go.

image.png.39f210014f252b5736be4c8df6182b91.png

  • Leicester on a 3 match losing streak.
  • Ipswich on a 6 match unbeaten streak
  • Leeds on a 10 match unbeaten streak, but dropping points today.
  • Southampton doing Southampton things. (still has Leicester, Leeds, and Ipswich to play, but all 3 are away)

  • Leicester's stanglehold at the top has loosened.
  • Southampton has shit the bed enough that automatic promotion is out of reach - positioned for the playoffs.
  • 3 teams could top 100 points at the end of the season. Imagine getting 100 points and having to be in the playoffs.

  • The Top 4 has tightened up.
  • Leicester, Leeds, and Ipswich have all dropped points in their last 2 matches
  • Southampton is dangerously giving supporters hope, picking up 6 points in the last 2 matches.
  • Southampton has 2 games in hand and play both Leicester and Leeds (Leeds on the last day)
  • Craziness!!!

Also way to go Wednesday! We get a nice Steel City Derby next year.

Sheffield Wednesday was dead to rights, but picked up 14 points in their last 6 matches, going unbeaten.

BIRMINGHAM CITY RELEGATED to 3rd tier, club's lowest ebb in 29 years. 🔵Blues were in the playoffs when first manager was sacked, Wayne Rooney came & went, but rot had set in. Harsh lesson for Tom Brady & friends on how not to run a football club.Their season in a picture. 🫣
