Pop Songs (Possibly Girly) that are Great (When No One's Watching)

True, but girly af. And so is Taylor Swift.

I need some young folk to tell me who the new pop star is.

I mean it's still Taylor Swift isn't it? I'm definitely not an expert in the matter but that seems to be who's getting the press. Haven't heard much about Ariana Grande or anyone else lately

Unpopular opinions thread is this way ----->

For me the problem with Paramore isn't so much the songwriting or the performances, it's the production.  Every song comes across as audibly constipated.  It's stressful to listen to . . . so I don't.

PS  I love that Kelly Clarkson song "Miss Independent".  That's a helluva hook.

A)Jimmy Eat World is definitely more legit than Weezer.

B)This song isn't something someone my age would consider what this thread is about. It was solid in its time

as far as this thread goes...  Love this song

Word.

And whoever posted Mad About You-- I fell in love with Belinda Carlisle in that video.

Here's a recent guilty pleasure song, I don't like Harry Styles all that much but this one gets stuck in my brain all the time:

Me, reading this thread:  "Hey, Babe.  Who was that artist that you and (oldest daughter) used to listen to -- it was bubblegum pop and all her songs were about girl power?"

Wife, without hesitation:  "Bree Sharp.  I love her.  I'm going to listen to her right now."

Yeah, I'm aware. I was in my 20's when they came out, they are part of that early aughts music scene that was basically the nadir of western civilization.

I sure as shit wouldn't consider them new. They actually just came out of retirement.

Here's some early aughts girl pop to get down on.

Sorry, I assumed you were older since everyone else here keeps posting songs from when I was a kid. I don't think Paramore's new stuff is as good.

Moving on...

The song below is another catchy pop song if folks can get past the auto tune. It doesn't bother me as much as other people. I think my ears aren't as sensitive.

A ridiculously catchy AF song of this era from DNCE

Those are legitimate artists tho

If we are wading into this pop territory, I dig the shit out of Big Thief and Soccer Mommy. But I don’t think they belong on this thread exactly.

I'll see your "Chains of Love" and raise you with this one with the caveat that Erasure probably doesn't belong on this thread.

100% legit

Always had a thing for 80s New Wave girls. Her are some from the Aughts(ish) that have that same vibe to me:
Feist

Camera Obscura

My favorite lesbian twin sister band

the above are all indie approved pop, all are fantastic artists/songs

Exactly.

If their shows feature choreography and/or back-up dancers, they belong on the list, otherwise not.

No hate but I'm not hearing strong hooks with those indie songs.

I just spent the day on a boat with some families and a bunch of kids. This song got the biggest reaction and spawned a mini dance party. (these were little kids)

St Elmos Fire is strong to very strong entry.

I'll raise you Hungry Eyes.

Some of you have much, much different definitions of "girly" songs than I do.

I think of this as a girly song:

Yeah, that one is total ear candy.

According to wiki, ICP covered it a couple of years ago.  But I can’t bring myself to search for it to give it a listen.

I've long said there should be some sort of test you have to pass that says you are cool enough to cover a song. It really hit home when the Goo Goo Dolls covered Give a Little Bit.

Can't believe it took until page 2 for me to think of this one.

Dammit man, I actually thought of that one but was holding it back.

If we're going old school, I still find myself singing this gem.

To me, this thread is about songs that, if you were hanging out with buddies, you wouldn't say hey turn that up.

In that spirit, I'll submit a few from my era.

Cardigans may be the winner.

If we're talking cute lead singers who cut some serious ear candy, I always thought The Sundays' cover of "Wild Horses" was fantastic.  Not better than the original per se, so different, but so so fine:
