Pop Songs (Possibly Girly) that are Great (When No One's Watching)

Featured Replies

I find it interesting that two of the biggest "artists" to come out of the greater San Marcos - New Braunfels megopolis (Sixpence & Blue October) are annoyingly precious acts that make me want to stab my eardrums out with an icepick.

This live version goes a little harder than the radio version...

God, I love Squeeze.  I could live on that kind of pop (Squeeze, Split Enz + Crowded House, Matthew Sweet) for the rest of my life.

Drummer is kicking ass.

Split Enz were great.

One of my best friends got called a f$* for listening to Matthew Sweet like 30 years ago by another guy we know, and to this day it's the first thing I think of whenever I hear Matthew Sweet and chuckle to myself. I actually like Sweet myself, just to be clear.

"Girlfriend" is a mainstay on my (mental) 10 Desert Island disc list.  I absolutely love that album.

On of the best Power Pop albums ever. Guitar work by Richard Lloyd, Lloyd Cole and Robert Quine.
Oh hell yeah.

It's interesting, I tend to think of it as extremely poppy, but the guitar work is totally smokin' and even kinda dark at times.

He's had a lot of strong work. Sick of Myself is a great song.

I couldn't decide if this belonged in covers, or live performance, or girly pop.  I decided on the latter.  Two of the two most gifted young female singers doing justice to Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over".  I've long been a fan of Miley, her low alto is amazing, although she pushes it too much.  Ariana's pure tone and chameleon-like ability to sound like anybody is astonishing, as is her always-dead-on pitch.  I wish she chose better material.  Anyway, I dig this, as much for the song (which is brilliant in and of itself) as the performance.  Did I mention Neil Finn's a friggin' genius?

90% of what my daughter listens to is K-pop and she finally played me a song that I liked.

(There have been other good songs that I've heard. But has anybody noticed that Blackpink the most popular girl K-Pop group has zero good songs)

I'm a swifty and IDGAF. Tis the Damn Season and Cruel Summer are my jams.

I think Cruel Summer has my favorite bridge of any of her songs, and that's saying something because I love her.

"He looks up grinning like the devil"

This band is blowing up.  I'm sad that I waited too long to buy tickets and now they're sold out up and down the East Coast. Waited because I would be the oldest person there, and expect a lot of teens and/or college kids.  I coulda worn a mask and just silently enjoyed their jangly pop sounds.

And they're trying to sound a little Cureish.

Huge Phoebe Bridgers fan here.  Obviously I love this song, but I wouldn't put it in the "pop song" category.  Yes, she has definite pop sensibilities, but her lyrics are too deep to be considered "pop" IMHO.  She's firmly indie in my book.

I really wish this project with her and Oberst had kept up the steam I thought it would.   This is such a great song.

I would have liked to know what a collaboration with Ryan Adams would have been like.  But at least we got Motion Sickness out of the breakup, so that's pretty good I guess.

Get on that Chappell Roan. Entire album is catchy.

My all time girly pop song I crank is I “Think We’re Alone Now”.

“See You Again”
“Since You Been Gone”

I don’t know if YT counts your plays, but I’d honestly be shocked if this isn’t my all-time #1.

Karol G and Tiesto basically copied this song* and scored a #1 hit.

*with Leona Lewis's blessing so technically it's not ripping her off.

While I like Madonna's music just fine, something about "Ray Of Light" appeals to me more than the rest of her catalog.

I'm not a dance pop person, but this one gets me going:

My daughters are into Chappell Roan right now and I'll be damned if that's not some really great pop music. Pink Pony Club, Hot To Go, and My Kink is Karma are all pretty good.

Huh.  Apparently I'm about to go down a Madonna wormhole.  (So to speak.)

I always loved this one. The video is pretty cool.

Yeah just came here for Pink Pony Club. Good Luck Babe has been sneaking into my playlists and I like it, but I just listened to Pink Pony Club like 7 times in a row. I’m going to have a dance party with my daughter tomorrow.

Ever since I’ve made the post about Chappell Roan - Sabrina Carpenter has taken over the house. Espresso and Please, Please, please are great. Videos make them better.

Didn't see this posted (shame on you!) or it already was (shame on me)  and worth the watch/listen

I don't know if any of Lady Gaga's music is considered great but I am not ashamed to admit that when I come across some of her music I stop and listen.  I think my favorite is Edge Of Glory.  I am not going back through the thread to see if it has been posted already.  Apologies if it has.

Just listened to Charli xcx's new album BRAT for the first time the other day. Throwback pop dance floor music with nonstop energy, melody and a beat. Also interesting lyrics.
