Isn't it nice when the wife is out of town for a few days?

On occasion.  I've got the pit fired up and am smoking anything that ever has mooed, oinked, or clucked at the moment.

Cross posted from the Poor people food thread in Lulz. The rice was left over from Fridays gumbo. The milk was sour and we were out of half & half so I made do with real cream. It was fine.

Not sure if I've shared this before, but there is a Mexican family a couple of houses down and I think they are the primary house for large family gatherings. Walked outside yesterday morning and saw them unloading folding tables.

Dad comes over (which he does every time they do something, about once a month) "Can I park some cars in front of your house today?"

Me : "Of course, and we'll be gone so use my driveway."

I come home last night to a tray of delicious food in the Fridge (His son has a key, feeds my dogs while were gone.)

God I love those days.

For realz.  All-day mexican backyard bbqs are the shit.  Black folks' bbqs as well.  All-day affairs.  All KINDS of grub - people bring/make their favorites, and it's a hodgepodge of awesomeness.  A brisket, sure.  But also chicken and pork steaks on the grill.  Two different kids of beans.  Deviled eggs maybe.  Shit, someone showed up with a big box of Church's spicy?  That makes a good snack while we drink beer and man the smoker.  That shit is life well-lived.

This is from a hole in the wall joint here in FW, not my pic. Doesn’t look great.

That looks like the parking lot would be full of Nissan altimas with body damage.

You should try an all day Italian party.

I'll keep checking my mailbox for an invitation.

But we DID learn about Italian eating the first time our son visited his Italian best buddy's family in Bologna.  He actually called us from the shitter -- "Oh my god I'm going to die.  I've already eaten mass quantities of the best food I've ever had in my life....and Gio just told me this is just the antipasti stuff.  The main meal hasn't even started!  What am I going to do?  I'm trying to shit to make room, I don't want to be rude."  To serve so much food to make my son cry uncle?  Well, that's a goddamned achievement right there.

Also, a study in contrasts, or alternatively titled: a study of the duality of Brisketexan.

Yesterday was my birthday.  I celebrated in the following ways:

- I road-tripped north because I had to be in court out of town.  Any birthday spent in a courtroom is a good day for a trial lawyer.  Seriously, good stuff.

- I got a bit later start than I wanted, so my lunch needed to be quick.  So I stopped and had a meal of spicy tenders and red beans and rice at a roadside Popeyes . . . situated inside a truck stop . . . which was understaffed . . . and the Popeye's pisser was broken so I had to walk all the way back to the truck stop bathrooms to take a leak.  It was an A+ experience.  Of course they gave me extra tenders, because who the fuck can count at Popeyes?

- on my way home, stopped to try to pick up a new firearm I had purchased and had shipped here.  Which is when the fact that DPS unilaterally changed my name on my TDL (they decided they needed to gringo-fy my middle name) finally caught up with me.  Federal databases have my name correctly (because, you know...that's my actual fucking name).  So, I need to bring in an ID with my actual legal name (my passport will do).  So, no birthday weapon for Brisket.

- wife and I went to Red Ash for the first time.  The steak I had there was the best steak I've had in Austin.  Seriously, it was perfect in every way.  Perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, melt in your mouth tender aged beef.

I figure this sequence belongs here because the anchor point was "birthday lunch at a truckstop Popeyes."  I may wear a tie to court, I may eat a fancy steak at dinner, but deep in my soul....I'm a truckstop Popeyes man, and always will be.

This sums it up pretty well.

It is an eat fest and the women just keep bringing the food.

This honestly sounds like very similar in format to the Midwest redneck bbqs my buddies and I throw.

The main difference is ours have a lot more venison, and weird pickled shit.

Low-rent/blue-collar/working class bbqs of most varieties are pretty damned good. Although a lotta you midwestern types need to get on board the seasoning/spice train.

My friends don't cook like our grandmas did.  The internet + major increases in the Latino and Southeast Asian populations in the Midwest have introduced seasoning to the old Germans, Norwegians, and Bohemians.

Extra? No... no. Those tenders were apportioned out by the cosmos eons ago. Your share of Popeye's will be balanced out by a missing item or slight order adjustment upon a future visit.

You don’t cheese hinge?

Bruh.

Leftover brats in the field. Threw some Swiss on top, mustard, and banana peppers.

Let it sit in a Pyrex container in my black metal lunch box all day, and the heat baked the cheese a little.

Funny we used to take all kinds of shit for lunch back in the old days that was not refrigerated.

Tuna salad sandwiches with mayo, boiled eggs and just about anything and I don’t remember ever getting sick either.

And I would definitely have eaten that brat.

Never got sick drinking from garden hose, shared soda bottle/can…

I’m a little more careful with something that has raw egg but not much.

When you’ve lived out of a lunch box for long periods basically throughout your entire life, you just get pretty inured to bacteria.

Neighbor lady just sent over some carnitas and Barbacoa.

apparently it was the potatoes (and the eggs) in the potato salet which sat out at the picnic all day which made people sick. commercial mayo is acidic so is a hostile environ for bacteria.

Not hostile enough. I got food poisoning from tarter sauce that had been left out on the mess deck salet bar since lunch. It was a dark and stormy night.
