How long to clear ABIA Customs when flying in from overseas?

Featured Replies

Asking for a Brit friend visiting Austin this fall.

Mrs. Brat & I have not traveled by air from a foreign country since 2018, so don’t have a clue these days.

A bit of outdated data, but I last did that in May of 2019, and recall it took about 45 minutes.

It depends on how many international flights are arriving around the same time.  My return from Cabo had 3 flights waiting at the single baggage carousel.  That took over an hour.  If there aren't any other international flights arriving, it shouldn't take much longer than a domestic flight.

The most recent time I flew internationally, it literally took a few minutes. I was the first to get my luggage and there was no wait at customs. Austin used facial recognition software to move me through. So, it sounds like it can be highly variable depending on the time of arrival and the speed that they get the luggage onto the carousel.

If you only have carry on bags it will be really quick. We have done it a couple times recently and there was little to no wait.

Coming back from Frankfurt last summer it took about 30 seconds.

We returned from Cabo in June and our daughter returned from Europe in July. Both times took less than 15 minutes.
