Texas Women’s Basketball 2023-2024: Handing out ass whoopins and lollipops, and we’re all out of lollipops

It seems to me like Vic still needs to land another inside difference maker to be competing for a FF next year. Neg me if you want, but I don't see it in Oldacre. She didn't get starting min at Miami and her stats don't indicate anything more than a replacement for Hadi, and not an equal of Gaston. Not much left to go after though.

And, of course, nobody knows how long it will be before Rori is back in form. I remember it took Lashann 2 years.

Oh I don’t disagree. Oldacre is good depth and maybe she’s starting center in 25-26 depending on what we do in the portal, but we need another inside player. We cannot rely on Carlton to play big minutes, she’s just a freshman. You need someone like Barker who can play the 4 or 5 and be starting 5 next year.

Yeah, I think we're all in agreement here. Need to land Barker.

Just a COVID year I believe

I heard the Astros offered him a contract today.

Coach Wisdom is now following Cameron Williams and Coach Lovato is following both of Cameron Williams' parents.  She graduated this weekend from Michigan.

Is Williams enough? I'd have to think Texas stills needs to land Barker.

I would hope we could still land Barker but our interior depth would be without her:

6’4 Jones / 6’6 Oldacre / 6’3 Williams

6’1 Moore / 6’2 Carlton

And no idea where Boutilier slots into that rotation, if at all

My concern would be both Jones and Williams are gone after next year. Barker has 2 more years

Former onetime Texas commit Deja Kelly ends up at Oregon. Good for Amina

Barker must have her family and team on lockdown under penalty of death bc there have been no leaks whatsoever

Not that anyone was concerned, but Rori announced she is graduating this weekend and returning for her master's degree

Well that's...odd? And late in the cycle.

Kind of shitty for the transfers Iowa took unless she told them she was retiring?

The portal reopens for those players with the coaching change though, right?

Yes, another 30 days.  But still kind of sucks for them, as schools have likely gotten close to completing their rosters for the fall.   Kind of have to hope it's an internal promotion, like Stanford, to keep things in place.

My favorite part of her announcement was "there's never a good time to retire"

Well, mid-May is a shitty time since the coaching carousel was over and the portal had closed (except now for Iowa players) so if any of them leave, you're kind of SOL in finding quality replacements.

Timing for Iowa coach retiring sucks...

they pulled a Stanford and immediately promoted an assistant so I’m sure the plan was there all along

Similar to the bullshit blOU pulled in transition from Stoops to Blinkin'   (June 7, 2017)

Hope it bites Iowa women's basketball in the ass...

Imagine that we go to aggy first.

does everyone get one team home and away to make a 16 game schedule and even out the home v away games?

Looks like our double opponent is the defending national champs USCe. What luck

It's weird that they seem to be doing three home-home rivalries in men's bball and just one non-rival in women's bball.  Is the women's season generally shorter than the men's?

Not overly shorter.

I hate it

OU and aggy on the road and neither at home?? Wtf?

Yeah the SEC did some shit ass WBB scheduling. Hopefully there’s enough complaining by the coaches about it. Zero reason we shouldn’t be playing aggy and OU home and road.

Cameron Williams picked Miami so…. barker or bust?

It looks like Texas-USC, A&M-Arkansas, OU-Mizzou, Tenn-LSU, Auburn-Miss St, Ole Miss-Vandy, Bama-Florida, and UGA-Kentucky are the home-home "rivalries."  Not sure what the reasoning is other than vaguely matching up the better teams.

So the Texas-SCar matchup is viewed as a bigger ratings driver than LSU-SCar? I can't see any other reason for doubling Texas with SCar than that. Doesn't SCar also bring back damned near everybody? That's some bullshit.

Two preseason top 3-4 teams

Vic and Dawn rivalry renewed (had some good games at Msst against Dawn)

Likely the top 2 teams in the SEC - could see this matchup 3 times at least (2x regular season, SEC champ title game)

Well I knew the SEC wasn’t going to play nice with their scheduling given we’re the newbies. Well probably be @aggy in just about every sport and have the toughest schedule to boot

So like the big 12 making us play @UH in every sport

Maul lands at Cal

Rori Harmon is ahead of schedule working her way back from injury. She's been training with TJ Ford. Per Gary Hamilton.

Looks like we may be done with bigs transfers.

That seems like an awful fit with Betts and Gardiner in front of her.

Two of the most coveted front court players left went to 2 schools with the biggest logjams in the front court - Dauda (South Carolina) and Barker (UCLA)

make it make sense.

I said that was the biggest head scratcher at the time, and it’s even more so now.

Carlton and Oldacre are going to need to be bigger contributors right away than I think was initially planned.

From Vic’s comments earlier this spring, Carlton was already pegged to play big minutes next year, even before the portal opened.

He has talked about Carlton as being one of the most college-ready bigs he has ever recruited from HS who can and will play right away with no adjustment period.

OB spoke to Vic from Florida (he was at the SEC meetings and on Finebaum) and he confirmed Rori should be at 100% recovery in about 5 months.  She'll have to practice first before he can determine when she can play again and how many minutes.

It is unlikely Rori will be ready to go full-time by the time we start the season with Michigan in Las Vegas (very beginning of November), but hopefully she'll be 100% in terms of minutes by the time we get to early December (when we would likely play UConn).  Still need to see how else the schedules shakes out in terms of any Thanksgiving tournaments and other non-conf matchups.  But I think we will start the season with Booker and Phelia at point until Rori is cleared.

With how well Madison played point this past season, I have no problem with easing Rori into the starting lineup in November. Once Rori is 100% and starting, Texas is going to have some intriguing player combinations with Rori, Madison, Shay, Phelia, Jordan Lee, and Bryanna Preston--dang what a group to work with.

We aren’t used to a Vic team being deeper behind the arc than in the post.
