Seem like that's out of place in a 2023 thread.

Maybe that's just me.

Not sure it matters seeing as 2024 will end like any of the other past 29 years lol

Fuck that. Not interested in Jerry's puff piece. All these guys making documentaries about themselves is so lame. Still squeezing that run from 30 years ago into relevance today. It's as bad as the 85 Bears at this point, yeah we get it, you've done nothing since.

Yep. I would compare our 90s dominance to the 85 Bears in that we haven't did shit since then but they have at least made a Super Bowl in 2006 and another NFC title game appearance in 2010 so we are even worse.

It’s a curse on Jets and won’t suprise me if Rodgers gets injured early again.

Forever eat the bag of dicks, Skeletor.

It's a great time to be a sports fan in the DFW area, save for one thing... 😕

the bears won one super bowl in the 80s.  90s cowboys won three out of four.  we were a dynasty that dominated the league for half a decade.  the bears were great in 85.  great season for them, sure, but does not compare to america’s team in the 90s 🇺🇸

Is Jerry shielded from stuff like this or does he just not care? I know he wants to win, but it has to be in a way where he gets all of the credit, hence hiring dumbshits for coaches because real coaches would get too much credit. which was clearly the problem he had with Jimmy Johnson.

It's both. He has enough money not to care and since he's the owner he doesn't have to fire himself. He is in that job until he no longer is breathing. It's also on a fandom that continues to take this shit. They continue to pay good money every season. The stadium is always full. Merchandise is always purchased. What incentive does he have to change? He doesn't really care about winning or he would make the changes necessary to do so starting with himself.

I heard the thought last week that maybe we're all misinterpreting what "all in" means. It doesn't mean Jerry is going to put out the resources necessary to win. He's saying this is the time for Dak and McCarthy to be "all in" since both are on one year deals and there's no more chips left for them. He meant more "put up or shut up".

Jerry has as many championships as all the teams in that picture combined. He had his success. He's not desperate to win. He knows the Cowboys don't need to win to remain relevant. Might be the only team that operates like this in the NFL. Look at New England, they are now a footnote. As long as the brand makes him a ton of money and they get their exposure, he is content with these results. You can't convince me Jerry cares about winning. As long as his inbred family have the decision making power over roster management, he doesn't care. And he kept Garrett as a head coach for a decade when he didn't even last a few years as an OC for the Giants.

The most poorly managed team in the NFL.

look at how much cap space each QB has taken up the last 5 years (2000-2004)$151M - Dak Prescott<gap>$134M - Jared Goff$129M - Kirk Cousins$124M - Matthew Stafford$123M - Patrick Mahomes$118M - Deshaun Watson$103M - Aaron Rodgers$103M - Jimmy Garoppolo$96M - Kyler…

I'm beginning to think that Ickes is on to something.

Before we get into the football payroll side of things, let's talk about a concept called the "Family Office" the family office is a tool used by the ultra wealthy to make significant investments into private companies. These are fully incorp'd investment businesses...
In addition to that, the Jones' own a massive NTX land/real estate developing company (Blue Star Land LLC), and a multitude of other significantly sized ventures with which the family are intimately involved, as well as Legends Hospitality, etc.,
So if they can just toss $100M into a Nat'l Gas company to refinance some bank debt, they clearly have cash available... So why won't they pay football players? That's where the speculation comes in....
See, despite what fans want to believe, the upside for return on investment of a dollar spent inside an NFL team is relatively capped, ESPECIALLY for a brand as prominent as the Cowboys.
This wasn't the case when Jones bought the team in 1989 when he essentially staked EVERYTHING into the team. Clark Hunt called it the greatest risk anyone had ever taken in sports.
But now Stephen, who was placed high into the FO months after he graduated from Arkansas, doesn't have the same view. His view revolves around the portfolio as a whole.

This is why I talked about the idea of a "loss leader" a few days ago. The Cowboys don't lose money for sure, but now, the Jones' main purpose is not to "win" based on the Cowboys, financially or otherwise it's to let the Cowboys brand be the thing that gets them ahead other ways
So my theory is that there is a cash budget set somewhere in the range of $200M cash for the year, and that that number likely hasn't changed for several years. From 2021-2023 they never crossed $200M in cash spending, despite the size of their QBs contract.

Signing a Dak extension this spring, or really anything more than one vet FA over the league minimum would push them to the point where they are at or over their budget.
In short, they could easily spend another $100M cash on players this year, and stay well within cap compliance, but they'd rather invest that same $100M into an O&G company, and blame the salary cap for why they didn't do more.

TLDR

Also WEAKDR - What Everybody Already Knows, Didn't Read

Jerry has reached the summit or been right there for over 15 years, the top of the team valuation heap. He's done really trying except for keeping that going. It's why he runs all things. He won't hire an outside competent football-focused GM, ever, unless they are in lock-step with that plan.

So now it's just managing the CAP - Cowboys Amusement Park - experience and making sure the cheesy rides and terrible food and goofy atmosphere are all working and the top positions give the appearance of giving a shit so that the rabble continues to overspend on tickets and merchandise and believe that this year, man it's the year bro.

I’ve been reading Cowboys articles all morning. I’m convinced that what they should have done is push their chips all in this year for a real run at a Super Bowl. Then let Dak and Lamb walk, trade whatever you can for picks, and turn the keys over to Lance to see what you have there and/or tank. Re-emerge in 2 or 3 years with a stockpile of picks, cap space, and knowledge about what Lance is or isn’t. Dumb plan?

#1731

IMO - Dak isn’t worth the big $$$, compared to his last contract, until he can get the Cowboys to at least the NFC Championship.

Hook’em!!!

Jerry Jones is a hype man circus ringleader.

Money is one of his favorite mistresses.

Cowboys are Circus Show to make money.

Cee Dee Lamb, you deserve better. Ask for a trade to Houston. Jerruh is wasting you.
Ceedee is part of the problem too come playoff time. The whole team morphs into losers, including him.

Right plan wrong year. Last year was the year. But since they didn’t, fuck it. The dude to trade is Micah parsons. He will never be worth $40 mil a year. Lamb is affordable. Hire a new coach this season to manage the rebuild.

Jerry wants to win in the same way that I want to sleep with Charlize Theron. Sure, its been my plan for like 20 years now, and I'm sure I'd enjoy it mightily, but tbh  I'm not really putting in the work to make it happen.

Your odds are better than Jerry's.

Typical Dallas front office. Reactionary instead of being proactive. Vikings just reset the market with Justin Jefferson and now Lamb is going to want the same or more.
