Damn he was looking good still at a game recently.  One of the reasons why Da Bears still have the most HOF’s all time.    RIP

RIP to a legend

RIP

Hits close to home, losing contemporaries.

But Nobis was better.

The 8-year old in me is still amused by transposing syllables, turning his name into Butt Dickus.

RIP

You say fuck that yo Holmes fuck this I'm the king Ad-Whammy you're Dick Butkus

That would be Super Bill daring to swat the ball from Butkus’ hand.

A true Illini great. (Yes, kids, Illinois once had good football.)

I mean, if you think about it, the dude was born to be a linebacker, what with being named after the Butkus award, which is given to the top linebacker every year.

If he was so good in college, how come he never won the Butkus award?

Damn, that sucks.  I wish I were old enough to have seen him play live.

They didn’t have participation ribbons in his day, millennial.

RIP to a definite legend.  He was just on the field talking to his nephew Luke (Packers o-line coach) pre- game when the Bears and Packers played on September 10

RIP DB. I never him play, but the name is known to every sports fan.

He made a ton of guest appearances on Leterman or Carson. Maybe both.

Real funny guy.

Another great thing about him was his feigned incredulity over what other players said about his play.

I’ve been looking for the clip with no luck.  So, as I remember …

Butkus once told of a dream he had.  He hit a ball carrier so hard the helmet came off and rolled down the field.  When it stopped, the ball carrier’s head was still inside.  Butkus just laughed.

Michael Richards Yes GIF

He couldn't have played in todays game.

He wouldn't have made it through the 1st qtr without getting thrown out.

One of the best. And if he played today he’d be kicked out of the league within the first few games for head hunting. A different game, for good or bad, but he is an icon and a goat.

He may have legitimately killed that lions receiver.

That was wyant’s gramps.

imagine making fun of him in grade school for his name

My high school band did the halftime show at the 1967 or 1968 Bears-Falcons game in the flying saucer of old Fulton County Stadium. We were seated on folding chairs on the field behind one of the end zones. I wish I could say Butkus ran over me or I saw him close up but that would be a lie, which is strictly forbidden on Surly, right?

I do vividly recall Gayle Sayers flying straight at us bringing it to the house on a simple sweep for about 60 yards.

Butkus was the Duke Wayne of football. Plus, he was not acting. RIP number 51.

RIP to one

The man absolutely ruled the gridiron.  He'd probably be banned in today's league.

I call bullshit on that. HoF worthy?...you bet, but he is not the GOAT...That honor goes to Tommy Nobis'. DB could not carry Nobis' jock as a college LB...check every stat there is. Why on hell the top LB award is named after DB and not Nobis' is a crime.

Larry Czonka said he would have rather played against Butkis every week than against Nobis' once a season.

How I learned about Butkus as a kid.

This better be the music played at the funeral.

Damn, a lot of the old greats in that clip...

Side note, I think he hated Roman Gabriel.

Damn the Bears went hard core on the sacrifice front to stop the hemorrhaging.

RIP to a legend. He was the defensive equivalent to Earl Campbell. It is a shame we don't have more footage from his time patrolling the midway.

Dick Butkus and Bob Lilly were my childhood heroes. He was such a badass; it’s too bad his knees were subjected to the same barbaric surgeon as Gale Sayers.

The role of the middle LB was so different in the 4-3 of the 60’s vs from the 90’s onward. Your MLB had to be the defensive QB calling signals and the blitzes. They had to be a primary run stopper plus able to cover a TE and the middle zone. Butkus excelled at the mental element and the physical. Many played single platoon so had experience in high school and college on both sides.

There were so many great ones back then. Sam Huff, chuck Bednarik, Bill Bergen, Nobis, leeroy Jordan, Joe Schmidt, Jack lambert, Willie Lanier are just a few of them.
