I continue to be fascinated by the lazy characterization of anyone who is anything less than "I support what Israel is doing 100%, without any reservation" as just another "liberal."

I am, and always have been, pretty moderate.  Even conservative on many points (I'm actually pretty hawkish for someone who votes Democrat these days).  Nobody here has said that there aren't hard decisions to be made, and unpleasant actions to be taken, in war.  Where you are wrong is where you take that truth, and extrapolate it to "and therefore, anything and everything the side I support does is right, and cannot be questioned."

Even worse, you are blind to what this does to Israel's position in the long run.  If you had asked me on October 8th....or even a month after, "who has the better side in this situation right now?", I'd have answered "Israel," and rather quickly (and yes, that is with full knowledge of Israel's unclean hands with respect to Palestinians....as well as my knowledge of the previous unclean hands of Hamas and the PLO and Hezbollah).  Today, I do not give that answer.  I am the sort of person who Israel wants and needs supporting them.  I am not at a campus rally saying "From the River to the Sea!"  I am not wearing a keffiyeh.  I think that the over-the-top pro-Palestinian types that I know are ridiculous, childish, and blind to reality.  But I am coming quite close to losing any and all sympathy or empathy for Israel and its cause.  If Israel wants to say "fuck everyone, we're going to be a villain," cool.  They can do that without my support.

I will likely never again think well of Israel as a state.  I am not alone.  And again, I am no Hamas-sympathizer.  I'm the type of person who Israel-supporters could once say were pretty much in their corner.  I'm not any more.  It doesn't cost Israel to lose the support of Brisket.  But in the long run, it will cost them to lose the support of millions of people like me in the West, which is happening in real time.  One of Israel's greatest assets has been popular support in the West.  Burning that down for now and the future seems counter-productive but hey, Bibi has the war of annihilation (which also functions to keep him in power and out of prison - what a coincidental bonus, right?  Couldn't POSSIBLY be a big part of his motivation, could it?), just like he wanted, and isn't that what's really important?  Short-term win for Bibi, long-term cost be damned.

Hey I’m totally against genocide an ethnic cleansing, it’s just the only way to root out this terrorist organization is to indiscriminately bomb the civilians who live in the same area, starve them out, and make the area completely uninhabitable

So, did Hezbollah have all of their radio-controlled explosives tied to the same frequency and so Israel just spammed the frequency all through Beruit? Or is this something more exotic. Curious what actually exploded.

#4575

It was literally a pager.  What it seems is that Israeli intelligence compromised whoever provided Hezbollah with the devices.

Such an attack would suggest Israel's intelligence has infiltrated the provider of those devices. This is a very high-value op that was just used: the question is for what purpose? Is this a prelude to a broader operation, or was simply carried out for "shock" value (beyond the…

Well, I dont know about you but at this point I would be throwing all my comms into the sea at this point..

The other question would be is if they can blow them up, have they been listening through them the entire time?

This is wild for so many reasons. You got to give it to Mossad, this is an all-time "Holy Shit!" moment from both the "they can do that?" and "what else have they been doing?" lines of thought...

WTF? Was it a supply chain attack by Israel or something? If there's some piece of code out there that can turn a pager holding only a LION battery into a grenade, then air travel is about to get a whole lot more burdensome.

It’s super hard to see how any sort of non-physical targeting would result in pagers blowing up like that.

I agree - that said, if anyone could figure out a way to do it it would be the IDF's security apparatus. Stuxnet and all that - they've got a history of finding software-exploitable hardware vulnerabilities.

That is some crazy-ass footage though. Talk about precision targetting

I am guessing a small explosive was planted in the pagers in the upstream supply chain before being delivered to Hezbollah.

What is interesting is now it is pretty obvious whoever had possession of one of these that were injured is directly tied to Hezbollah. Also, it looks like the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon was injured when one of these exploded...

You still need something to explode, that part can’t be hacked.  And it looks like a hell of a lot more than a small battery.

#4584

To be clear on this, anyone using a pager in 2024 is a terrorist or human trafficker so finding out who supplied these things likely was not a big mystery. Not a big market.

Video shows aftermath the explosion, someone in the background can be hears saying "where's the Sheikh? does he have new or old pager?" implying there are new patch of compromised devices

Yeah ok from that video that looks like an explosive charge was embedded into the pagers at manufacture. Damn son that's a good way to target terrorists, not carpet bombing neighborhoods

Sounds like these were put into the latest batch of pagers they received. It is rumored that they were updated due to a potential Israli security breach of their network and so they got upadted more "secure" comms..

MORE: The Iranian ambassador to Lebanon and two of his bodyguards are reportedly injured in the pager incident. They were using the same pagers recently distributed to Hezbollah's members to replace the older versions they had.

#4588

So how many members of Hezbollah did they castrate by doing this?

This is insulting Hezbollah on so many levels. This is just an insane level of tradecraft by Mossad.

Which means the Israelis purposely left a bug that Hezbollah would find but would not suspect.

Quite graphic video from a hospital of many injured/dead.

Spoiler

200 of the 2,800 Members of Hezbollah that were Injured by today’s Pager Explosions, are reported to be in Critical Condition with Third-Degree Burns as well as Amputations.

Damn, had to re-read the headline a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. Didn’t even know pagers still existed outside of a museum in 2024.
