Now that the right to farm and ranch is protected in the Texas Constitution, I'll be opening a pig farm on my 10 acres.

It should be set up like income tax brackets:

10% income from ag = 10% of the ag exemption

50% income from ag = 50% of the ag exemption

etc.

So you want to pay $20 a pound for ground beef and $100 a pound for steak?

Any large farm/ranch producers would be getting close to a 100% ag exemption if not the full 100%.

Part time farms aren't putting enough product on the market to move the needle.

What?

Yeah, no. Most cow calf operations are pretty small and don't contribute a significant amount of income to the owners. In 2017, 54% of farms with beef cows had fewer than 20 cows. Those folks are generally barely making a profit the few years they do pull a profit.

I can see the 54% of farms - however, I think the question is how much of the actually supply is provided by those small operators - I would guess it’s very small.

According to the data from 2007 published by the USDA, 45.9% of the beef supply came from operations with fewer than 100 cows. 5.3% of operations with 1 to 49 head and 24.1% of operations with 50-100 head were operated as a primary source of income. 71.9% of all operations were operated as supplemental income.
