From OTF:

Texas added a few pieces to their Player Personnel department last night. The first being Jackson Gleeson, who I have heard has a great mind for identifying talent at early stages. Eager to see what kind of impact he has inside of Moncrief now, but there was some really positive early returns here.

The other being Jordan Mitchell, a former graduate of The University of Texas who is beginning to take the next steps behind the scenes. I have a couple of messages out to learn more about him and will update further when I do.

both are internal promotions, as were all of these changes announced a couple of weeks ago:

Gleeson played football at Baylor as well

Mitchell is also an internal promotion:

this should answer the "will any of the folks who were not retained at Bama have soft landings at Texas" questions.

As long as we aren't asking either of them to spell assistant or equipment for their new jobs, we should be good.

Can you tell me more about your life path. I want to avoid it so I dont get to a point down the road where I think this is one of the finer points in my life. THanks.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.

Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese.

Nice to see Taylor is still on staff long after her Dad has come and gone.

Spoken like somebody that never got up on stage so that a skeezy looking Mexican guy could pour pitchers-full of watered-down tequila shots on their face and chest, and then bask in the glow of the raucous applause earned via a third place finish at the Spring Break twerking contest.

Fortunately, he was at Baylor after Briles, or that might not have been a football related.

Chris Gilbert back, as Assistant GM

https://footballscoop.com/news/sources-texas-hiring-fbs-assistant-former-dallas-area-prep-coach-as-assistant-g-m

Quote

Chris Gilbert's resume in football carries a bit of everything.

Now, it's set to add a significant new line: assistant general manager, University of Texas Longhorns football.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Texas and Gilbert are finalizing a deal, barring any unexpected snags, to bring Gilbert back to Austin, Texas.

He left the UT program in December 2022 in order to become an on-field assistant at North Texas, where he was the assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Mean Green.

Previously at Texas, Gilbert had been the very popular director of high school relations for the Longhorns -- and he understandably had flourished in that spot.

After all, Gilbert won more than 120 games as a prep coach in the Dallas Metroplex.

Gilbert served a decade atop the Lancaster program, where he took the team to record heights and exited as the school's all-time winningest coach.

On the heels of its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance and transitioning into its membership in the Southeastern Conference, Texas just announced it is finalizing a lucrative new long-term extension for Sarkisian after a 12-win 2023 campaign that included a tone-setting early-season win at Alabama and the Big 12 championship in the program's final appearance in the title game.

Texas is set to open its 2024 season Aug. 31 at home against Colorado State before traveling to defending College Football Playoff champion Michigan in a massive intersectional showdown.

That's big time. Good get by Sark.
Maybe I missed it, but who got the GM job if he's assistant?

Brandon Harris

Brandon Harris
Ahh ok. So what the consensus, is Brandon Harris being above Gilbert ok or should it be the other way round? I really don't pay much attention to staff past the on the practice field coaches.

I for one am excited our DL coach is friends with Conan.

Bobby on Chris Gilbert:

Spoiler

It's a big surprise that Chris Gilbert is returning to Austin.

But it's with little surprise that his title will be Special Assistant to the Head Coach. It's a key role that signals Gilbert will be leaned on for not only his recruiting acumen and connections state-wide but also his understanding of how the big picture works for Steve Sarkisian and Texas football, i.e. how the sausage gets made.

The title is a credit to Gilbert and all of what he brings to the table.

Before leaving for North Texas a year ago, Gilbert had held the role of Director of High School Relations for Texas. Yet during his time in Austin, he wasn't just responsible for outreach to high school coaches for the Longhorns.

Gilbert was heavily involved in the recruiting department, making sure the Horns knew the ins and outs of every recruitment in South Dallas and other areas of the state. While working hand in hand with new general manager Brandon Harris and former head of player personnel Billy Glasscock, he also created friendships everywhere in the athletic department. Gilbert was liked and respected by players and coaches alike.

To put it frankly, his reach exceeded his grasp in short order.

Fast forward to today and I think there's a special opportunity for Gilbert in Austin. After losing Glasscock to Ole Miss a month ago, Sarkisian's move to pursue and hire Gilbert makes a lot of sense.

In Gilbert, Sark gets someone with loads of institutional knowledge. That knowledge allows Gilbert to hit the ground running at a time when recruiting is set to take center stage.

It also gives the Horns needed another experienced person in an off-field support role for Sarkisian and the program following Glasscock's departure.

And all of this matters because...

The Horns can not let anything derail this window of opportunity. Hiring someone like Gilbert helps do exactly that.

A great football program is never built by any one person. It's built by a collection of people who know what they're doing, who know how to get things done, and can do them well. Chris Gilbert is one of those people.
