  • Guys, I know I’ve been lacking participation this year in the thread. Mostly because I was grinding to advance my career. (Some of you in this thread have known for a while)   Well, a few we

Torrey update: couldn't get through to reservation line so went out cold. Got off to a bit of a slow start today and didn't get there until 8:00 or so. Put my name on the list and got called 10 minut

Played in a tournament this weekend here in Colorado.  Shot a 40 on the front got a call from my daughter that she had rear ended another car in traffic.  Ended up shooting a 51 on the back.  Moral of the story concentration is required for a good game of golf!

Sorry to hear that.
Everyone with kids knows how unsettling it is.
No doubt you lost all concentration.
Damn fine front though.

Putting together complete round tough regardless.
I rarely can improve off a great front.
Can’t keep tempo and focus 4 hours.
Sucks but that’s why we play the game.
My game has been a little hit and miss lately.  My draw off the tee has turned into a hook.  I've gone back to playing a fade off the tee and its improving.  Played tournament course at Golf Club of Houston on Sunday, eagled 8, drove the green on #12 and birdied 17 for a 78.
Played our Cypress course today since Tradition is aerated.  For those in Houston the Cypress is in good shape and its only $19 after 12 during the week, still only $29 on weekends.  Shot 75 tipped out, hit 10 greens, made 3 birdies, turned around and played 7 more holes with a couple of our other staff and threw 2 more birdies and damn near holed out on 18 from 148.  Hit a knockdown 8 which took one hop and stopped less than a foot after one of the other guys bounced one off the stick from about 15 yards further.

What’s the name of your Cypress course?

We have 2 courses here at Cypresswood.   Cypress which is a bit shorter, a bit tighter but much flatter.   And Tradition which was has been used for the Monday qualifier to get into the Houston Open up until Harvey last year and then it moved to Woodforest this year

83 today. Way better than the 97 last week. It's amazing how quickly the game can change. So mental...

Played at the club yesterday with the girlfriend at Oakmont (not that one, the one in Corinth) and shot a 78.

But why I’m posting because I got my first eagle since I started playing again 9 months ago, missed a double eagle by 16 inches. Also, she birdied the same hole! She is a 27 handicap and only been playing about 8 months.

Lowered my handicap to a 9.8 which is the first time I’ve been in single digits since I quit to concentrate on my tennis about 15 years ago.

What’s allowed me to do this is working on a straight line release which has added distance, and more important, accuracy to my driver. Added at least a half to full club for my irons as well.

Everyone on this board, except for a handful of the really good players who post here, release the club too early. Work on that and it will change your game.

Pic of my putt I had for eagle and girlfriends putt she had for birdie. I hit driver-4 hybrid and she hit driver-5 wood, sand wedge.

Sorry for the long post...

Still looking for my first eagle. I’ve had about a dozen putts at it. Thought I had it today. Second shot on a par 5, 235 yard 3 wood that I shouldn’t have hit. Needed a little bit of a cut to hit the green. If it went dead straight I’d be in the woods, too much cut and I’m in trees short right of the green.  Bunkers left and long. Told my buddy right before I hit it that I’ve got a 1 in 10 chance of putting it on. Hit it absolutely perfect. 15 feet for eagle. Left it a foot short and a cup outside.

Fuck.

Rule #1 is NEVER LEAVE AN EAGLE PUTT SHORT

Run that fucker 4 feet by if you have to

Iron update:

Got the t7 PW- matched my gap and sand wedges and got a little bit better spin number.

Got the mp-18 SC 5-7 to go above the MB 8 & 9

went with the MMC 4 iron. Launched just a wee bit higher for me.

Second pic attempts to show the progression of offset, head length, and top line between the 4 different models. Pretty damn seamless. Well done, Mizuno.67a95d6f2d10642578cf6e7688497555.jpg12830a52adb23bc516de03c93814b50b.jpg

Anyone playing the GolfPride Align grips?  Thoughts?  I've been kicking it around and was going to go in this week to do it.

I just use basic tour velvets with the logo down. That said my new hybrid and wedges came with their grip that looks like Lamkins and I am thinking of switching out to them.

I don't have the align, but use the MCC+4 grips and love them.

Welp, just experienced the greatest course I’ve ever played. Streamsong Red was absolutely incredible. A must play.

No, walking wasn’t allowed in our tourney, though I wouldn’t have anyway given the heat.  There’s not a lot of shade and the winds were pretty light.  I know I went through a ton of water and came home with a bit of a sunburn

I'd waited a long time to play Carlton Woods Fazio course this morning i finally got to play it.  Game has not been good lately.   Great track though.  Played with our head pro, tournament director and another assistant.   Normally i like to play at about 6500 yards, playing with them though was back tees. Struggled but also 3 birdies for an 81 on a course rated at 75.8.  8 fairways, 7 greens, 29 putts.

Quality humblebrag imo

Playing my 7th or 8th round ever on Saturday. But my first ever after having actual instruction (summer clinic out in Kyle, not necessarily 1-on-1). Hopefully I'll see improvement.

Played Bluebonnet last month and hit my first ever Birdie on that Par 3 on the front half. Got within 3 feet from the box.

Y'all seem to be a tiny bit further along in development than I am. Just a bit.

Good luck Saturday!

Many of us have learned that we often get worse before we get better after lessons. It’s the natural side effect of overthinking, which is fine as you’re working things out. Set reasonable expectations of yourself and when things go sideways, just relax and enjoy the round rather than trying to remember everything the instructors said. It seems to be generally true that you’ll have more success instilling proper technique on the range rather than trying to do it mid round. Let the round be the natural byproduct of the work you did on the range, even if it’s not your best.

Also, getting a bird in your 6th or 7th round is quite the accomplishment! You’re clearly on the right path

GREAT words, thanks!

Lurch, you just made me insanely jealous. Great pics, I really wish I could have gone back this year.

How did you play 16 on Red? What a great par 3 (and a great pic you took of it). What about 9, the short uphill par 4?

Wind in our face on 16. I had the box and took 2 extra clubs, landed right on the pin (front position) and rolled down into the middle valley of the green. Other guys both just barely clear he hazard and get hops onto the green next to the hole! I three putt bogey having barely made it up the ridge with my first putt, and they cover each other with birds. Stupid game.

I believe 9 is the par 4 where I hit my drive pin high, maybe 10’ left of green. My chip ran long (never leave an eagle try short!) and left me with a 2 putt par.

Just got back from French Lick Resort in Indiana.  Played 36 holes on Monday and 36 on Tuesday.  Old fat guy is sore.

Kind of remote but highly recommend it.  Two great courses, cool old hotel and a casino.  I will try and post pics later.

Let's talk mental game... How do you guys like to play?  Do you think about the round during the whole round (between every stroke) or do you like to take your mind off the game to escape your last shot?

One thing I have noticed with myself this year is that I have a "fuck it" attitude on the course, usually singing to myself or something like that.  I haven't carried one bad shot over into my next shot at all this year.  I haven't played enough for my scores to reflect it but I haven't lost hardly any balls and never shank/duff two shots in a row.  I stopped yelling at myself on the course and try not to think about golf until i'm over the ball and even then I keep singing.  On the range, I've actually been listening to smooth jazz and I'm making better contact than ever.  I'm a 17.1 index so all this matters to me.

That's a lot of walking.

In other news, @Longhornanth and @babysdaddy joined me yesterday for a walk around my place.  I think we lost a combined 30 lbs. of sweat.

I did not walk.  Courses weren't very walkable.  You could, but very hilly.

Give this a listen, put it into practice, and I think you’ll be really happy with how it changes your game on the course.

The last couple of holes were brutal. Course was great and greens are in perfect shape.

Sorry I missed you “other Greg”. We need to play again soon.

Not sure how many Houston area posters we have but I'll post this.

We're starting a Saturday skins game here at Cypresswood September 1, will be every Saturday at noon on Tradition. Total cost $60, $20 per player into skins pool.  Play individually or bring your own group.

Skins, 2 closest to pins, and a total score on all par 3s.  So based on 40 players payouts would be $400 in skins, $100 each closest to pin and $200 for lowest total score on all par 3s.

All payouts cash, no gift cards

Beware of outsider ass holes and/or sandbaggers who will cheat like there's no tomorrow. Hate to have to say it.

True but its not handicapped, there are no net skins so sandbagging doesnt matter.

Takes care of the sandbagging, but there's still the potential for cheating.  It happens everywhere.  There's a story running around this summer about a prominent member at one of the most prestigious country clubs in the city who took an aggressive position with the rules and he won a large prize. He was confronted after the tournament and he admitted to making a "mistake" and returned the money.  Most of the time these guys are never caught.

Can you give some more details?

No.

Don't know the guy. I won't identify the club. I heard the story 4th hand so the truth is probably somewhere between he flat cheated or it was an honest mistake.

At least tell us what the “mistake” was

At least tell us what the “mistake” was

The story I heard was he somehow improved his lie.

It’s amazing how often I find my ball in the rough, sitting on a tee

Or how often it rolls back into the edge of the fairway when it’s been sitting out of bounds. [emoji16]

Upgrading my golf sim needs in my new home.

Have a lightly used skytrak that’s still in great shape that I need to sell if anyone is interested. works great and is a blast. Just need something a bit more robust for the new setup. Great launch monitor and works really well with the app to dial in your game.

Pm me if interested.
