Of course, there was no package. Told the Amazon vendor and then went to the post office in person to let them know. Past experience told me the carrier probably put it in the wrong box. With me standing there, the post office guy conformed it had been delivered to the box and told the person on the route to go back and check. She never did. So then I filed an online form. Two days later, nothing. So I got fed up and the next day stalked the neighborhood until I found the postal truck, followed it to our common mailbox area, and then flagged the carrier when she got out of the truck. I told her the package was lost, and she said she’d already looked for it and didn’t find it. So I told her to specifically look in the box with the numerical address but one street over. Of course, there it is. So think about the number of instances of mistakes. Three at least, and I have to go find my own effing packages. Ridiculous. Cock ring eh?
January 1Jan 1 Author Quote Meta is betting that characters generated by artificial intelligence will fill its social media platforms in the next few years as it looks to the fast-developing technology to drive engagement with its 3bn users. The Silicon Valley group is rolling out a range of AI products, including one that helps users create AI characters on Instagram and Facebook, as it battles with rival tech groups to attract and retain a younger audience. https://www.ft.com/content/91183cbb-50f9-464a-9d2e-96063825bfcf I firmly believe that all of generative AI is complete bullshit and on balance has made anything it touches worse. Also, we are on our way to making Dead Internet Theory a reality.

Also, we are on our way to making Dead Internet Theory a reality. At least in its current form (Transformer architecture at massive scale trained on stolen content), GenAI reminds me of Block Chain…a solution to a particular type of problem, requiring shit-loads of expensive compute to execute efficiently, and thus cost-recovery drives business to expand applications of it or follow the tech hype cycle to extremes. So like Block Chain, “AI” is being crammed into every possible corner when no one asked for it in use cases with no value-add. I’d like to think the smart way is to adopt the general language model, extend it with use case-specific training data, and leverage a process like RAG to give it access to SME-written policy/troubleshooting/etc documentation…make a legit useful knowledge base search, or virtual support agent that’s smarter than a basic logic tree, or digital Dr House that diagnoses Lupus. I doubt I’ll be happy to have Apple Intelligence’s version of Clippy when I’m burning whale oil for lighting and oxen power to commute because all the electricity/water is fully dedicated to data centers. No doubt better modeling architectures will drive towards legit intelligent systems…but current pace is going to bankrupt companies and waste limited resources standing up monster data centers to keep pace in an imaginary race.

March 3Mar 3 Circling back to USPS bullshit: I bought something on ebay a couple of weeks ago. It was shipped from CT and was on it's way to my house in the OKC burbs. After a couple of days, the tracking showed that the box was in Ft Worth. Great, I thought, it'll be here in 2 days, tops. WRONG. It went from FTW to OKC, then back to FTW for a couple of days. Then back to OKC and then to my town! Yay, I said, delivery tomorrow for sure! NOPE. It left my town and went to some other podunk town, 50+ miles away. WTF?? Then back to OKC for a day or so, then to my town, then delivered. I called the PO the day before it was delivered to complain, had to wait on hold for 35 mins for them to pick up. She said "I guess it's making a loop" and while she was pleasant, she offered no help or insight into solving my issue. And the box showed up looking like it had been kicked down the road the whole way from Connecticut, instead of shipped on a truck.

March 6Mar 6 This partnership is going to lead to levels of enshittefication the likes of which have never been seen: Quote Fanatics has made its long-expected push into ticketing. Michael Rubin’s company has partnered with Ticketmaster to create the Fanatics Ticket Marketplace, where users on the Fanatics app can now buy resale tickets alongside apparel, merchandise, trading cards and collectibles. The deal is part of a wider two-way partnership between Fanatics and the Live Nation unit, whereby Ticketmaster tickets list via Fanatics, and Fanatics merchandise lists via Ticketmaster.

March 9Mar 9 Amazon is really going down the tubes. Most everything I’ve price checked is cheaper on Walmart these days. Walmart does free shipping over 35 bucks, and prime video really isn’t worth much for the free tier with ads. I may not renew prime again despite my college age kids loving the convenience.
