I mean what could possibly go wrong?

You mean besides masking the overall rotten state of the economy outside of data center build-outs?

The DoorDash experience now is full on insanity. I just tried to order two items and it asked/forced itself upon me to keep adding other items, some not even remotely related to what I wanted. I had to click through at least two extra screens to get to where I wanted.

Still don't understand the fascination with Doordash / Uber Eats.  Talk about a couple of gigantic scams.

This.  "Hey, here's my pitch to you, consumer: pay $60 for $20 worth of food that you could go pick up in 15 minutes yourself."

My son drove Doordash for a while for extra cash, and he'd regularly come home shaking his head, like after he'd just delivered a single slice of cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory to a shitty apartment.  A $9 slice of cheesecake that ended up costing the customer $30.

I mean, as a former hard drinking idiot, I DO get some of the appeal of "I got the munchies, can't drive anywhere, and I'd like two orders of pasta, a slice of pie, and a bloomin' onion."  But Doordash has a much bigger customer base than drunks with the munchies.  It's a lot of "lazy asses who make bad decisions."  Or, in shorter terms, "Americans."

And I’ll be cold, and take an hour. And invariably will be screwed up, so you have to whine to the store and DoorDash about it. Instead of just picking it up yourself and checking the food before you leave

I don’t pay delivery fees for food. My lazy ass can go pick it up. Plus the dog likes a short car ride to the pizza place

Stopped at the McDonald's in San Marcos a few weeks ago, and there was a Door Dash guy there picking up stuff.

My drunk brain thinks this is a good idea.  And it is much better than me driving while intoxicated.

That's poor planning on your part.  It's advisable to always have some good snacks available before commencing a solid drinking session.

90% of the time I've used either is when I'm in a hotel and too tired or lazy to leave my room.

You don't like paying twice as much to get cold food delivered, all while the company takes money from the restaurant, too, without providing any reasonable wage and protections to the drivers?

You sound like an asshole.

That's the only viable and reasonable market I can see for it.  Shit, my son and his buddies have been over playing video games and whatnot, and consuming various beverages and such, and they decide they need to order $60 worth of Taco Bell.  I get it, and they aren't driving anywhere.  But the bulk of Doordash traffic is just lazy dumbfucks.

I've done it once or twice in that circumstance.  But usually, I either 1) want to get out and get some air, so I can eat somewhere or pick something up, or 2) I picked something up on the way to the hotel because I was thinking ahead.

Yup. Going out drinking? There’s gonna be cold pizza or Chinese food in the fridge waiting for me when I get home.

Drinkin at home? I picked up snacks, real food and shit earlier in the day/week and am ready to go.

I spend an absolutely embarrassing amount of money on doordash but I'm a lazy pothead

Installed a new screen protector on my phone. I decided to scan the QR code for the installation video, on the off chance I was missing something. I scan the code and it asks for phone number and email to continue to the video.

Get fucked.

Watched a good bit of this.

I'd  loosely summarize Doctorow's position as the path to enshitification was laid by changes to anti-trust law and regulatory enforcement.  Related to that he explicitly states removal of individuals like Zuckerberg isn't the solution and whomever comes next will likely be "worse".

Obviously being anti tech boss is a popular position.  Lina Kahn drove a hard anti-trust position at FTC and was hated with the power of a thousand suns by tech world.

So who has a solution to stopping/slowing enshitification?  and what is it?

Nuclear winter?

Well, the Rule of Law is dying a quick death.  And there is apparently no more obscene word in the English language than "regulation."

So, yeah....the nuclear winter suggestion remains at the top of the "most likely solution" pile.  Kinda seriously.  The only thing that can stop the tide is complete, total, and catastrophic social failure.  Good news: we're headed there at breakneck speed.  Bad news: we're headed there at breakneck speed.
