November 20, 20241 yr Author I don't get what Honduras is doing. They are inviting 100% pressure, they are just asking to get scored on with these tactics.

I just tuned in but that’s certainly what it looks like in the 10 minutes I’ve been watching. Honduras need a miracle goal or this is over imo.
November 20, 20241 yr Author I also don't get their need to try to walk every ball out, instead of just clearing them out. Given their tactics, just booting them down the field is a lot smarter than what they are doing.
November 20, 20241 yr Author Honduras might as well just go home now. They have been playing incredibly stupid this second half and we destined to concede that goal. Edited November 20, 20241 yr by Captain Ron

Honestly, we scored 4, we scored have the lead on GD. Our back line cost us the top spot. I would also note that since Mexico can only go thru as 4th place, I don't mind not drawing them in the semis - let Canada deal with them.
November 20, 20241 yr but the thing is..... that miracle goal knocks out tri and there is still 10 minutes left....

November 20, 20241 yr Didn't the foul occur a meter outside the box? 2 hours ago, Ted Lange said: Honduras up 2-0 takes on Mexico at 830. Let’s see how many PKs concacaf gifts El Tri. So the answer appears to be one, and it was totally not needed.

And Honduras got what they deserved. They played so dumb in the 2nd half. It was like watching Berhalter coach the US. Edited November 20, 20241 yr by Captain Ron

It was like watching Berhalter coach the US. Ah, I'd walked away and only caught the tail end of the replay. Didn't realize the El Tri player was moving away from goal. Honduras was dumb from start to finish. Virtually no effort or intent to score. Not sure why they thought coming in up 2-0 on aggregate would be enough to guarantee them advancement even if they sat back and allowed Mexico to fire at will for the full 90.
November 20, 20241 yr Author Sitting back to let a team fire at will is going to get what you saw tonight - losing 4-0. If Honduras wanted to play smart, they would have kept Mexico back and limited their shots. Letting them get off 27 shots was just insane. They also needed to have a much better play for the counter, they had maybe 1 or 2 counters that had any teeth to them.
November 20, 20241 yr Author BTW - as noted, Mexico comes through in 4th place. So the matchups for the Semis are: Canada-Mexico USA-Panama The games are to be played at SoFi
November 20, 20241 yr Time to pay back Panama for that match this summer. As in thank them emphatically for getting GGG canned.

November 21, 20241 yr Especially weird because I thought Turner was very good in both legs against JAM.
November 23, 20241 yr Popular Post The Pepi slander on this thread is criminal. Dude had 2 more goals today for PSV. The idea that there is anybody even close to Pepi as the #2 striker on this team is laughable. Balogun and Luuk de Jong both start over Pepi based on reputation alone. Sure as hell ain’t production, because Pepi is a machine when he plays. He’s always been our best 9.
November 23, 20241 yr My bad. Game wasn’t over. Pepi with a hat trick. Tied for the Golden Boot in the Dutch league even though he only has 4 starts.

November 26, 20241 yr Author The damn shame is that the federation not only thought "We can go with an American coach" but that they did it TWICE!!! The second time after said coach proved that he was in WAY over his head. I said it on another site, but we are now well past the point where American coaches outside of a select few will be able to take this team to the next level. I hope that this time under Poch shows the USSF that we need to play a style that takes advantage of our talent in a way that allows us to go toe to toe with anyone and we can't settle for American coaches unless they are tactically diverse.

I complained about Greg a lot the first cycle, but in retrospect I thought he did an average job overall but a good job building up the culture of the lockerroom that was in shambles. I wouldn't say I liked how his hiring went down at all, but that's not his fault. Overall, he would have left the team in a great spot for the new coach to build upon. However, the way it all went for the 2nd cycle is just inexcusable from the USSF. There was only downside bringing him back again. I agree that I hope we're at a point where we're past the Greg Berhalters, Bruce Arenas, and Bob Bradleys of US Soccer. Not trying to discount what any of those guys did for the sport, but Poch is about to show we've had a higher ceiling for awhile now and it needs to stay that way post Poch.
November 26, 20241 yr Author I disagree. He was a bad coach that did very average (ok that’s right). His teams failed to get any sort of signature wins/results. For their flaws, Arena and Bradley both got some signature results. You talk culture - I think that Gregg left that in far worse shape than ever with the US team being softer than I have ever seen them. When he left the team had no chip on their shoulder, they would get punched in the mouth and back down. As noted we’re well beyond what most US coaches can do here. The names listed, except for Gregg, did something for US Soccer. But our player pool has grown such that those coaches cant coach the talent they would be given. We need guys with more diverse ideas.
November 26, 20241 yr Bringing back GGG a second time is one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen in sports. Wholeheartedly idiotic. That being said, if USSF had not rehired GGG and had gone another direction, we almost assuredly would have hired someone nowhere as good as Poch. It took GGG, crapping himself in spectacular fashion, for USSF to be shamed into real action. The fact USSF, all along had the ability to land someone like Poch, but settled and resettled is absolutely infuriating.

I'm saying the culture would have been in a good spot if he had not returned for the 2nd cycle and USSF would have actually made a sensible decision on the new coach. He destroyed all that work when he was brought back. I really don't think he was a "bad" coach, I think he was extremely average which is not the expectation of the job he had.

We are hosting a damn World Cup and we gave that once-in-a-generation opportunity back to an extremely average coach? And paid millions of dollars to a consulting firm to come to that decision? Truly one of the most puzzling sports decisions I've ever seen--and I'm a Cowboy fan.
