Texas Softball 2024 - Farewell to the Big 12 (and back to OKC?)

I was curious about OU’s incoming class. One site said that all 8 incoming freshman were ranked in the top 21.

It’s a large and very talented class. But they don’t have any college experience. Youth can get you far (Texas and UF), but it’s hard to get you to the top of the mountain

Patty recruits well every year, but they won't all be hits. Her recruits are always highly ranked, but part of that is due to perception once they commit to OU. Even if 3-4 turn out to be all americans during their careers, they will still be freshmen this year, and the learning curve and workload of college softball can be tough.

Agreed. It’s doubtful that the freshman will match the performance of the outgoing seniors, so you would expect a step back.

Not a lot of portal entrants to be worried about yet, but a bunch that would be surefire Gasso pickups have gone elsewhere.

Meylan (UW to OKST) - 2.14 ERA as a freshman/Freshman All American, 2.55 ERA this past year
Groff (Southern Ill to Omaha) - top 10 in ERA this year
Roelling (Cal to Georgia) - 3.16 ERA (former top 15 recruit)
DiNardo (Arizona to Nebraska) - .382 and 7 HR as a freshman; .295 and 13 HR as a sophomore
Johnson (UW to aggy lean) - .336 and 7 HR as a freshman; .336 and 13 HR as a sophomore

So far for OU, it's likely Wyckoff, unless she goes to Tenn, and whoever else enters in the next 7 days (17th is the final day to enter, but coaches have up to 48 hours to enter the names)

New rule proposals:

Leaving early - would only be challenged if called on the field by an ump or if the runner successfully advances a base on a play, EXCEPT if the play is: a home run, a ground rule double, hit by pitch, foul ball, or when a runner is forced to advance, such as a blocked base (interference), walk or catcher obstruction

Video reviews - umpires would be able to initiate a video review without a coach's challenge any any point in the game when a base is not properly covered by an umpire during a play

Edited by Js1

Challenges - you win your challenge, you keep your challenge.

Robo umps for balls and strikes during playoffs.

Fewer mound visits

<Old man rant>

Conduct - They need to reel in OU on their celebrations.  Slamming the bat down at home plate after getting a walk should constitute a warning followed by an out the next time and an ejection the third.  I.e if Player 1 gets a warning, Player 2 gets an out, Player 3 gets kicked out.

This is a step in the right direction, but going back to the 2023 review rules (leaving early not reviewable at all by coaches) would be even better.  This certainly did not make the game any better in 2024.

According to Gasso, they have "9 visitors" over the next 2 weeks from the portal.

Wyckoff has to be one (C/1B), Rylee Holtorf from UW is probably one (infielder) and maybe Kenleigh Cahalan from Bama (SS).

As a reminder, OU has to replace:

Ace - Maxwell
Pitcher - Keeney
Catcher - Hansen
INF- Torres/Hodge
INF - Jennings
INF - Brito
OF - Coleman
OF - Boone

Not yet.

Maybe some of the girls need to finish up degrees and will transfer after the fall. I am shocked none have entered the portal yet….truth is, we needed a few to enter.

I always forget about that portal period after fall ball. It’s when we got Dolcini. Always a chance for Gasso to get someone that graduates in the fall.

Rumors flying that Canady is entering the portal

Supposedly she has a $250k NIL offer from OU already. Stanford coach did say she’s going to put people on blast for tampering.

Going from Stanford academics to OU academics....for softball?
Seems like a bad decision for future career outside of softball

Quotes when she committed

Quote

“At first, you always think four years. But Stanford? You’re talking about the next 44 years,” Bruce Canady said. “And if you can get something from Stanford, you’ve done your job.””

“College isn’t just a four year decision. It’s a 40 year decision,” Nija Canady said. “So, I feel like Stanford, it’s going to prepare me for life. I’m excited for that.”

"Unless, of course, my team slap dicks the ball around and provides me with no run support," Canady added.  "In that case, boomer sooner bitches."

Leaving Stanford and passing up that degree is a really dumb decision.

Unless she wants a degree from the university of Texas.

some lady I know who follow softball closely said she has heard OU, Texas and Florida as the 3 potential destinations.

Remember when we were gonna get Maxwell?  Anyone that thinks she is going anywhere but OU is naive.

Horrible decision by Canady. She's never going to get a job in Biomedical Engineering with a worthless degree from blowu.

Also, some of the earliest leaks online came from OU affiliated folks.  This one has been in the cards for a while.

We can try. What we can offer being a title favorite based on returners, versus hoping all those OU freshmen are day 1 stars.

Nope. We have historically just had one catch all thread for every softball season started by Js1. There’s only a handful of us that post about the program throughout the pre season and season. During the WCWS, we get the usual drive by baseball dudes that show up telling us we need to move the bases further apart, also incredulous that the starting pitcher can be pulled and return in the same game.

And the shock that softball pitchers can pitch multiple days in a row or even games in the same day

I tend to agree with starting pitcher thing.

Should we start a recruiting thread that way we can look back more easily in one thread for portal and recruiting stuff?

If not we should then definitely move the bases back lol

I’m not opposed to it. It’s just hard to find coverage, commitments, etc. Even harder to find news of visits for portal players

Wouldn't a better chance at a national title at the expense of our main rival be worth well above $250K to Texas? I'd assume so.

Judy Love loves OU softball and is worth $10.5 billion. She’s not going to get outbid by Texas

Once I figured out that business was owned by Sooners, I never stopped there again. Not that she noticed.
