Who do you have in mind?

For starters, not retaining Terry. And secondarily, it aint up to me. I will let CDC conduct a proper search. Something he didnt do the first time.

I want to thank Coach Terry for pouring his heart and soul into this program. He was forced into a tough situation and did a damn good job. I wish him the very best.

Show you work. CDC makes the coaching hires, last I checked. I could infer that you are suggesting there was a mandate made (presumably by Hartzell), but I seriously doubt he'd take such a strong stance. More likely it was a decision that the two of them arrived at together. My experience with people at the C-level of any organization is that they try really hard not to tell their leadership team who to hire/fire. That sort of thing would make our AD job a hell of a lot less attractive.

I don't think the extension means anything financially, but I could be wrong.

1. why isn't there more money for better players ?

2. then we can talk about coaching

Agree, we need a homerun hire. No excuses for CDC this time.

That's going to take some money, a whole lot of spending money.

What does "optics" mean?

Idk, I base my analysis on merit, but optics is what everyone is telling me. Draw your own conclusions. He wasnt qualified and had never experienced success at any level as a head coach. When he was given the keys to a final 4 team, he lost a double digit lead in the final 10 minutes of the elite 8 to an inferior team. This was entirely predictable and 90% of the board knew it. I know you were thrilled with the hire, but most people werent. And now we get to look like clowns for two seasons. Got punked by Tenn last year in the tourney and now we are getting punked by 20 by the aggies. Gonna be a long season.

to be fair a lot of the money wanted Terry because they are all buddies with him from the Barnes era...the elite 8 "run" helped.  CDC like any AD does have to listen to the money somewhat.  He acquiesced but the message was sent with the contract dollars.  the buyout is basically chump change.

It's a virtuous cycle. Better players want to feel confident that they are going to be developed and prepared for the next level. That takes a great coach. You can get a few mercenaries if you're willing to pay stupid money, but that's not a recipe for sustained success.

Correct, it is still ultimately his decision and he has to bare the consequences though. But yes, Barnes era money men were influential in the decision.

You are trivializing that season to suit your narrative by focusing on how it ended. Terry took over before conference play, held the team together, won the Big 12 tourney (emphatically), and had the deepest tourney run we'd had in 15 years. And every player on that team stumped for him to get the job, iirc.

For the record, I had real reservations that he would be able to sustain that performance, as did many others. There was no home run option out there, which meant that every possible hire carried a level of risk.

in the game thread - this team isn't 'athletic'. you buy athletic players now

how much nil was available for nil this past year ? is ut basketball top 20 in nil ?

what top coach is drawn to UT if the NIL backing isn't there ?

There was no way after that season that Rodney Terry wasn't going to get the job, and it had nothing to do with optics, whatever that means.

Stop being a dumbass. There’s plenty of NIL for UT basketball to be significantly better than this. NIL is not the problem here. We have a coach who’s not good at putting together a roster or coaching it.

I know nothing about our basketball NIL but I can't imagine the money wouldn't be there if/when needed. But the people providing it want to feel like the ROI will be there, and I don't think RT inspires confidence that it will be.

I thought the Moody Center was built because Texas wanted a great facility for student participation, draw talent, and because CDC said we were going to be a top ten program.

now you've done it...

I laugh at the people that say we had to hire Terry.  he wouldn't have made the top 10 interview list given the level of coaches CDC has hired before.  We hired him because CDC acquiesced to the money and the situation.  It is possible he made some calls and couldn't get a "no doubter" on the hook.  Terry was going to basically take any contract(within reason for a D1 Head Coach)presented to him.  it wasn't an easy spot but I don't subscribe to the theory that CDC HAD to hire him.

We didn't have to hire him, but we were never not going to.

The donors need to feel they will get ROI. Without that, the NIL will be lacking. But trust me, the money is there.

I would like to think CDC meant a top ten program for more than one year, with only one head coach.

That Chris Beard is the reason this has to play itself out.

CDC decided to make Rodney Terry the head coach at the University of Texas despite the fact that he would never have been in a coaching search if it wasn’t for Chris Beard acting a fool?

So we threw away 2 years of our program for political optics? Cool. Maybe CDC will remember his job is to make tough decisions and not cave to the woke mob. Pretty sad that 90% of the board knew the hire was an abject dud but "optics" prevented us from conducting a proper search.

Christ, just fucking drop it.  Your position is stupid and you aren't going to convince anyone otherwise.  We're Texas, we do things a bit differently than every other bullshit program out there.

At least go re-read the first 50 pages of this thread and see all the same damn arguments and then shut up.

Yes.

But also because Rodney Terry got that team to the Elite Eight.

Hiring the interim coach almost never works out.

This time wasn't ever gonna be the exception.

We’re hiring a new coach at the end of the season and we go under .500 in sec play.  The question is who?

Crickets from the posters who defended the RT hire by saying things like, he deserved it, let's give him a chance, he is a great recruiter and that his previous stints didn't matter because he didn’t have the talent to work with. They also tried to prove that he might actually be a better coach than Beard. Lmao

He got the job because he took that team to the Elite Eight.

We discussed this ad nauseum when he was hired. He didn't deserve the job; he deserved a bonus and a recommendation to whoever would hire him as their HC. That would have been the smarter thing to do.

Maybe. But I don't have any problem with how CDC chose to handle it.

Then you won't have a problem with this season or perhaps another one like this either.

I won't. After what Chris Beard did, I expected the process to take a while. After Rodney Terry made that run, I expected it to take even longer.

Is it? Right now I don't think it is.

It has become very very expensive to field a top level football program in this climate, and I don't think the money is being allocated for basketball right now. Maybe that changes with a new HC, but at the moment it doesn't appear to be there. I'd like to see the numbers on it.

I couldn't bring myself to watch this game. I knew what was coming. The season through the UCONN game was all I needed to see to know where this is headed. This is a poorly developed team in every facet.
