I want to thank Coach Terry for pouring his heart and soul into this program. He was forced into a tough situation and did a damn good job. I wish him the very best.

Honestly I think Haith is the hire that RT fucked up the worst

I'm a big fan of Jans.

In 3 years at Miss State these are their DRtg rankings (29th, 22nd, and 9th). That's with far less talent than he would have at Texas. You set a pretty high floor, IMO, with Jans because he will always have good defensive teams at Texas.

If a president is having to be heavily involved in a sport like basketball, you have the wrong AD.

Why do people do that shit? Shaka had to go. Idc what he’s doing at Marquette, he didn’t win an NCAAT game here. At all. None.

Nor did we replace him with RT. The new hire fucking torpedoed his own employment

What's even more frustrating is I still believe Beard could have saved his job if he were at all remorseful and took accountability for his actions. His ego wouldn't allow it, and CDC reluctantly told him to get the hell out.

I think his fate was sealed regardless. Political winds were brutal at that time for him and cancel culture was in full swing. The students and admin would've had a meltdown if we had retained a woman abuser.

An article the Statesman posted a year ago had Terry's buyout at around $7 million, so it won't be much.

Not sure $7mill buyout is accurate.  RTerry is only in 2nd year of a five-year, $15.3 million contract.

I was pissed when CDC didn't sign RT to a 3yr contract initially...

Signing RT to a 3 year contract initially would have been a bigger disaster than hiring him on the current terms

I'd bet after a specific date during after this season his buyout is less than 5 million. We didn't have to pay Beard's buyout so we could have some money available and boosters likely to want to go big game hunting to poach a coach.

We also have paid RT $2M less per year than Beard, so we have saved some money. This should be a relatively easy call for CDC to make. Keeping him on would cost a lot more in lost revenues.

Oh yeah, money is not a problem in the slightest.   He costs less than Beard per year and we didn't have to buy out Beard - CDC has probably put all that money set aside already to pull the trigger when the time is right.

That's what I posted yesterday and why I asked if his whole contract is guaranteed.  If it is, then $7M is low.

But, as several have said, we didn't have to pay Beard's buyout so there should be some money in the bank that would hopefully negate any argument about the finances.

The extension last year wasnt guaranteed.

Also wasn't CDC just handed a $14m CFP payout for this year?

Like thank you, here you go RT, GTFO.

What extension?  Are you calling his post-Elite Eight 2023 contract an "extension"?

Rodney appears to have one in-game expression. Every time they cut to him, he's making "that one". You know the one. Like confusion mixed with exasperation. It got annoying about two years ago.

I have also seen a few references to "extension" on this board, but he got his contract in 2023.  He did not get an extension after one year - this is not Mike Perrin.

Someone was saying that we extended Terry after the loss to Tenn last year for two years. Non-guaranteed extension. Maybe they were way wrong lol. They said we signe dhim to a 3 year deal but then extended him two more years after last season.

No, we signed him to a 5-year deal right after the 2023 tournament.

In 2023 we didn't pay Beard his full $5 million + no buy out correct? We gave Terry a $1 million dollar bonus for a savings of $2-3 million (assuming Beard was paid up until suspension)

I thought RT’s 5 year deal was fully guaranteed and we would owe a $9 million dollar buyout after the season?

There was no 3 year deal + 2 year extension.  Was always 5 years.

Texas interim head coach Rodney Terry has agreed to a deal to become the school's full-time coach, the team announced on Monday.

The contract is for five years, sources told ESPN.

hah that's right.

I think Terry needs to go to the Chris Beard summer coaching seminar where they cover defensive fundamentals.  As for offense, we run simplified pick and roll and iso sets that don't work very well in crunch time when we need a decent look at the basket.  It's confounding that he cannot implement some effective options for guys to pop open when Johnson is getting double-teamed ... perhaps he's trying and Johnson isn't running what they want.

Shed and Onyema are not earning their NIL.  Time to give Kent and our freshman bigs (Codie and Vinson?) more minutes.  Johnson needs some tough coaching about shot selection, game management, and technique and effort on defense.

I forget the exact quote, but the announcers were talking about Tramon Mark and his previous coaches. Something like "Mark said Rick Barnes was a tough coach, and Eric Musselman was a tough coach. He described Terry as more 'motivational'."

Figured that would be featured here at some point. Time to get to motivatin', Rodney.

Edit: And by Rick Barnes I mean Kelvin Sampson.

We have to share that $14 million with our conference members.

The buyout is minimal and considering where the roster will be after this year with no Tre Johnson coming in out of HS, the writing is on the wall. This is a pretty straightforward situation.

This athletic department isn’t hurting for money. When our “fans” say a buyout is too big, I wonder if they have their own personal finances in mind because there’s no buyout too big for the amount of money coming out of the athletic department at UT.

And it’s not like if we spend an exorbitant amount of money on a buyout that we won’t recoup that money down the line because we will.

Also—this roster is completely gone next year so it’s going to be a rebuild no matter who the coach is, so you might as well get someone new in their to completely redo the team/culture.

I did some googling and there was no report confirming the exact details of his contract, despite him being an employee of a public university. That makes me think it wasn't a straightforward 5 year guarantee, and we have an easier out/lower buyout at some point. My guess is we technically signed him to a five year deal to show public support, but we didn't fully lock ourselves in, and that's why full contract details were never fully reported.

Regardless of whether it's fully guaranteed, we have the money and he needs to go by the end of this year.

unless you are aggy, the buyout is already in the "budget".

It still pisses me off Shaka was allowed to coach 4 more seasons after he missed the tournament in year 2.

And he missed it again in year 4 - and got 2 more seasons!
