I want to thank Coach Terry for pouring his heart and soul into this program. He was forced into a tough situation and did a damn good job. I wish him the very best.

Last night was the first time I didn't even bother turning the game on until 2 hours into it. Saw they were down 20+ then turned it right off.

Same.

CDC has a list…..I’m guessing he’s already doing some looking…..but, it’s coming.

think it is as simple as this: If we make the tourney, he gets another year.

Honestly at this point he might need to make the Final Four. No one wants him back.

Second weekend or he’s gone. Let’s be real, he has a better chance of hooking up with Sydney Sweeney than winning 4/6 (or winning the SECT) and winning 2 NCAAT games

Nah.  No way we let him go if he makes the sweet 16

If he makes a deep run we are going to have to outbid other schools that will be coming after him…..

Same thing with the Dallas Cowboys. When Brian Schottenheimer wins the Superbowl this year, his services are going to wanted all over the NFL.

Derka lauding Barnes' general ability to get the most out of his team during the regular season, play basketball with high IQ, and play tough defense, IS NOT the same thing as Derka saying we never should have let Barnes go, he needs to be rehired, etc.

Don't read his posts on the subject if you don't want to, but also don't conflate his adoration for the man as him advocating for his rehire or something of the nature.

His constant bringing him up in every thread was the point.

"What about Coach XYZ?" - Suggestion of Coach

"Barnes did this, that, and more of this so no way we should hire Coach XYZ"

but this doesn’t happen. you guys being him up out of nowhere, not me. the only time i mention him outside of his dedicated thread is in context, in a manner that’s germane to the discussion, eg comparing and contrasting former and current UT coaches. it’s you guys who bring up him (and me) out of nowhere for no reason. you do it, and then you get upset at me about it. that’s the reality of it.

This the same guy who is currently playing his towards a low seed NIT bid?

CDC is not going to get us jammed up on a coach just for the feels……..

Relax y’all, Mr. Del Conte gots this?

Derka’s defense from surlyites about Rick Barnes is why I read surly. It’s like the key and peele skit about players names. It always makes me laugh. No offense to anyone.

It’s still too soon to know what will happen with Texas head basketball coach Rodney Terry. The Horns are on a three game losing streak with No. 15 Kentucky coming to town tomorrow. Things don’t look great for Terry but Texas is still a coin flip to make the tournament.

If he makes the tournament it’s a safe bet he’ll return. If he misses, then it’s plausible there would be a full blown coaching search.

Chris Del Conte has been planning for either outcome, including building a list of coaches that include NBA and CBB names, but the preference is to wait until next year. There is an assumption that if Terry can’t turn it around in year-3 there will be a better pool of candidates.

Somebody explain this to me like I'm 5(0).

It sounds like while everyone else (including tv partners) consider this year 3, Texas considers this year 2 and doesn’t want to fire someone after only 2 years.

that’s if you believe IT on this issue

But why would there be a better pool of candidates after next season?

Makes no sense to me either. Maybe the number of attractive jobs set to open we don’t want to compete with?

Yeah, let's go to the back of the line after IU, UNC et al fill their head coaching slots.

I think if you start seeing the 995ers coalescing around this line of thinking, it means Terry is back next year regardless because they don’t want to fire someone in Year 2 (or without a permanent president, not that I think they *really* need that in place but I get it).

Unserious basketball program then. Should just hire Scott Drew or Ben McCollum at that point.

Edited by BurntOrange&White

The only way this makes sense is that CDC likes to hit home runs and he doesn't think he can hit a home run this cycle for whatever reason (UNC (maybe)/Indiana competition, wants more data on other candidates, etc).

They want to wait an extra year so that the Chris Beard Redemption Tour is far enough along to rehire him!

This could all be academic because I'm not sure Texas makes the tournament if they can't beat Kentucky at home tomorrow.

F waiting a year.  It's not just about not making the tourney and/or looking so shitty in most games.  There's no life in the program.  The fans have checked out.  I'm seeing very little on the recruiting front.  Hell, I'm trying to think of one player that's even improved after getting on campus.  Start fresh, get some transfers, and actually give us something to look forward to next year.

Yep - wait a year and Moody will be a ghost town.  Vic will be regularly getting more fans to Moody than RT will for a whole year.

Yep. I can’t justify the cost for reupping my men’s season tix when our only home games are beating up bottom of the barrel squads out of conference or getting our ass handed to us in our conference games. It’s been a fucking beating going to Moody for men’s games this year. Thank god for the women’s squad.

If they bring RT back, I’m out. I could take a pretty decent vacation for what I’m spending on these tickets to watch shitty basketball.
Quite frankly, it’s pretty insulting to the fans if they are actually considering bringing him back.

My guess is if CDC can hit a home run, RT is gone this year regardless of if they make the tournament absent a Final Four run (lol). If CDC isn't able to hit a home run, making the tournament could save RTs job for one more year.

As this point I assume he's trying to line someone up behind the scenes, and the decision will be made by whether or not he's able to get someone he really wants. Not by whatever Texas does on the court from here on out.

i don’t believe this at all. there is essentially zero chance that cdc is sitting around like, “ok, if he makes the tourney he can stay, but if not then he’s gone.” that’s fan behavior, not best-AD-in-the-country behavior. just more evidence that IT is full of shit and knows less than several posters from this forum do.

towards the end of barnes and shaka’s tenure here people were livid. now everyone is just checked out, moved on. like you said- no life in the program. which again, makes the whole “he has to make the tourney to keep his job” line so implausible. even if Texas does consider this “year two”, cdc isn’t going to force the program to keep wandering the desert for another year because of the “optics” of firing an objectively subpar coach.

I don't even understand the idea that "year 2" isn't enough time.  Buyouts exist for a reason.  RT will get paid.  We shouldn't be held hostage to THAT perception (in contrast to what I feel was the only choice when we made him permanent).

But he’s also not gonna fire Rodney if he makes a sweet 16.
