I want to thank Coach Terry for pouring his heart and soul into this program. He was forced into a tough situation and did a damn good job. I wish him the very best.

im going on record: if Texas wins a play-in game or something and then gets hot for one weekend and goes to the S16, i reject the idea that CDC “has” to keep RT. in fact i would argue that this specific situation would be the very reason we pay him the big bucks.

CDC already knows that RT isn’t the guy; i’m sure he’s known that since before RT was given the HC position full time. as much as fans want to make the entire 4.5 month season all about tourney results, that’s not how a highly paid, elite AD works. if he’s not the guy then you let him go and you bring in someone who is. whatever push back you get will be short lived, and will be irrelevant if you replace RT with a clear upgrade. so yeah, i’ll say right now that i don’t care what RT does in the tourney, assuming that this season ends the way we all think it will. 7-11 in january - march >>> a couple of wins in the tourney.

Realistically, how many of our remaining six game do we have a chance of winning?    Maybe the South Carolina game?   Arkansas?

I’m thinking we’d be lucky to win two more.   If we get whipped by Kentucky tomorrow, we might see a totally defeated team and go 0-6.   It’s not my hope at all, but I can’t see how RT survives unless they go 4-2 and make a SEC and NCAA tourney run.   Hell has a better chance of snow though.

What’s the extent of Kaluma’s injury?  I don’t think they win any without him.

Not having a winning record in the conference means lower ticket sales. I am not sure if a s16 run makes up for the lost revenue during the season. At the end of the day, the bottom line means more than anything else.

It is worth noting Texas is a 2.5-point favorite against UK today. They'd be on the right side of the bubble with a win.

Well gamblers basically set the lines and they are idiots so there is that.

All the Kentucky injuries and Texas playing at home is the reason for that line.

You can't ask for a much more favorable situation for Texas to be playing the Wildcats.

It's a do or die game for Texas and Terry, no doubt about it.

kill shot = a 10-0 run

IMG_4658.thumb.jpeg.c6cebba4e0cdc1957926d99f8c235efa.jpeg

we’re among the best in the country at going on 10-0 runs (because we do in fact have the varied and talented offensive lineup that we thought we had in paper back in november), but we’re also among the worst at giving up 10-0 runs, because we’re poorly coached and undisciplined. this is and has always been a top 25/S16 caliber roster. it’s just not being coached well.

in 25 games we’ve got 25 kill shots and we’re 15-10. that ain’t right.

I’d like to see those stats broken down between the teams without a pulse in our non conference schedule vs conference. The last two years RT’s non conference scheduling has been embarrassing for the most part.  That’s why I don’t think total wins is a good measure of really what kind of team he is putting together.  I shudder to think about what we will get next year if we are forced to endure another year.

If i actually bet my free money shitposts id be way down.

That being said, you trying to jinx this?

we have tre johnson; we shoot 80% as a team from the line; we absolutely could end up in the S16. get ready for a lot of mixed feelings from here on out.

I don’t personally believe we can make a S16. After all, the tournament really is just about matchups. The *only* thing that makes me think we can surprise some folks if we get in (win at least 1 game) is this team will be underdogs fighting for RT’s life.

With that said, short term success is not good for the long term.

Any team that gets in the tournament can make the sweet 16. Happens all the time. Tournament success is awesome and makes me happy every time it happens. It’s also an absolutely horrific way to judge a coach because any team can make a sweet 16 (or get bounced early) there is just so much luck involved.

This. We were on the upswing after beating Mizz, aggy, barely losing on the road to Ole Miss and then the largest win over LSU in Baton Rouge. Then we stepped on our dicks for 2 straight games and Bama shat all over us

Kentucky could be a turning point to and easy end of schedule finish or a dead cat bounce bc of Kentucky’s lack of PGs yesterday

as i posted in another thread, we have tre young and we shoot 80% from the line- we can make the S16. i certainly wouldn’t predict that to happen, but one hot shooting day and this team can upset somebody on a saturday or sunday.

But it's a great metric to remove the interim title from a coach, am I right?

I mean- I knew it was a dumb decision at the time and it wouldn’t work out, but I also shrugged my shoulders and said “what are you going to do?”  There was no way he wasn’t getting the job. I’m just glad it was a short deal with a small buyout.

So you can get a 1 or 2 seed every year and then lose in the first round to a 16 or 15 and you're a great coach?

Tournament success is absolutely a big factor when it comes to evaluating coaches. It's not an end all be all but some guys win in the tourney and some guys don't.

Bennett until he didn’t then he won it all then he lost again.
I’d put tournament record something like 1 in 5 of the importance of a coach. No coach knocks dow. 1 and 2 seeds every year and loses in the first and second round every year. Lute Olsen was a choking dog until he wasn’t. I’m sure there’s a bunch of other examples those just spring to the top of my mind. 35 games is a way better sample than somewhere between 1 and 6 games.

our women’s team is 9.5 point favorites today against no.5, 25-1 LSU.

I shudder to think of what this team looks like without Tre. He is an absolute blast to watch but terrifying to think that he is the only reason (maybe adding T Mark) that Texas isn't firmly at the bottom of the SEC.

The fear factor of looking at Mulkey all game is worth a few points.

Her "Technicolor Dreamcoat" today has to be 2-3 points too.

actually it has been Kaluma keeping us above water after Johnson.  Mark has been a no show or very average for 80% of the year.  hopefully we can get some consistent higher level play from him.  I expected him to really help our guard situation.  If he can up his game it can help both kaluma and Johnson big time.

I was so iffy on that pickup bc both Creighton and KSU fans weren’t that upset he left.

But we’d be far worse without him

Regarding the Sweet 16, there’s a huge difference between having a sweet 16 caliber season (not a bubble team, ranked well inside the top 25, fun to watch, and an overall level of excitement around the program, etc.) and a bubble team that with some luck and a favorable draw makes the tournament and the sweet 16.

Just because we’re not the former doesn’t mean we can’t be the latter. And just because a coach makes the sweet 16 doesn’t mean he’s a sweet 16 caliber coach (by the above definition)

If RT made the Sweet 16 this year it would be only the 12th time Texas made it.  He already has 1 of the 8 Elite Eight's Texas has been to.
