Guy Ritchie & Cavill - The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Featured Replies

Ritchie is a bit hit or miss for me but I'm excited about this one.

this looks great.  guy ritchie has been fucking busy lately, his home life must be a nightmare.

Is this the movie version of Rogue Heroes?

I’m trying to square the “true story-ness” of both productions.

Based on a true story doing some heavy lifting here

I’ll see it cause it’s a Guy Ritchie film but this reminds me of Inglorious Basterds at first view.

Looks good but feels like a more diverse cast of “Inglorious Bastards”

Cool with me. IB is a classic.

it's true that it was a story.

The British did set up a ministry to do secret mission type shit but the movie seems to take some liberties.  The book by Damien Lewis is a fun read for WWII nerds.

A WWII flick the humorizes Nazis being brutally killed plus I get to stare at Eiza Gonzalez.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, based on the 2015 book by Damien Lewis and inspired by true events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare details the World War II strategies conceived by United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill and James Bond creator and author Ian Fleming, whose clandestine squad’s unconventional and entirely ‘ungentlemanly’ fighting techniques against the Nazis helped change the course of the war and in part gave birth to the modern Black Ops unit.

I assume this is about the SOE.

I love that when they namecheck Guy Ritchie movies, they leave out the good ones.

Or maybe I need to see The Man from UNCLE

I saw this last night.  It was a fun movie.  I have no idea how much of it was historically accurate. I assume that there really was a WW2.

I won't spoil much, but Eiza Gonzalez is just stunningly beautiful.

Lots of Nazis die.  It felt like a Tarantino movie at times.

The music choices were interesting, but it's a Guy Ritchie movie; it all worked.

I missed a couple of plot points, and there were a few anachronisms, but overall it was a very enjoyable movie.

This was a fun movie start to finish. Good pacing and a nice soundtrack. I would and probably will watch this again.

I enjoyed the movie.  Highly fictionalized might be an understatement.  On the actual Operation Postmaster, there were, in fact, no Nazis, no uboats, and no explosions.  It was actually just a well executed cutting out of the freighter and the tugs.  It did demonstrate the effectiveness of the SOE and SSRF in conducting raids to stymie the German war effort.

It's a lot more fun to see a bunch of Nazis slaughtered though.

At the risk of repeating myself

If you haven't watched the series Rogue Heroes, it's worth a look. It was on Epix witch now is MGM+.  Not at all sure about the historical accuracy, as it's not a documentary, but it's engaging.

Bobby Axelrod?  He’s an author?

It’s not Inglorious Basterds but it was pretty good.

It's fun. I'd recommend Giles Milton's book. The second half of the book has a different mission every chapter like the one in the film.

I think I probably enjoyed this one more, but I like both movies.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one and my wife did too.  I did find myself questioning if Tarantino directed instead of Ritchie.

Someone asked me about this film at work and I said that it felt like a Tarantino movie at various points.

I posted about it in the "last movie you saw" thread, but my son and I watched this last weekend and we loved it. Not super historically accurate but very fun. The violence was pretty comical - reminded us of Bullet Train.

Yeah, but more fun. I mean, who doesn't like dead Nazis?

Fun movie.

Cleopatra dress was worth the price of admission.

Were these two different groups?  Seemed like the same tagline but I didn't recognize any of the same character names and on Rogue Heroes they started out in the desert.

Loved Bullet Train and parts of this movie also felt like that one as well. The comedic violence is one of the things I enjoyed. The opening scene on the boat was just fantastic.

IIRC, this group is the beginning of MI5 (secret service).  Rogue Heroes was the beginning of the SAS (special forces).

Just finished watching. This film earned the coveted RPM Seal of Approval.

Just got out. Really enjoyed it.  Not great by any means but good, funny and worth your time.

This was entertaining. Lots of Inglorious Basterds DNA.

Including Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (well, the actor who played him at least).

It’s available on Prime for $10. Watched it last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. Lord have mercy, Eiza is a smoke show.

I saw it in theaters a bit back and enjoyed it. Nothing fancy, just a fun movie. Dudes rock.

It didn’t do great here, but I hoped it did well enough in the UK to be a success. I saw it had $0 and apparently Amazon had rights in the UK, so no box office there. Sucks that they didn’t put it in theaters. Hopefully Amazon paid up big to offset it.

I watched this tonight and really enjoyed it. Agree with a lot of the comments here - fun movie, strong resemblance to Inglorious Basterds, hints of Tarantino, gratuitous violence against Nazis will never get old, and finally, yes, Eiza Gonzalez is pure smoke.
