muSSk is having a difficult time getting a trademark approved for grok...I'm surprised he hasn't started spelling it groKKK

🕯️”Elon Musk’s bid to trademark ‘GROK’ for his AI chatbot has hit another wall at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. On June 17, the USPTO issued a fresh round of refusals to X.AI Corp’s latest trademark filings for ‘XAI GROK’ and the word GROK with a logo.” by Gerben Law https://www.gerbenlaw.com/blog/uspto-hits-elon-musks-grok-trademark-with-another-wave-of-refusals/

Was he able to trademark the word Tesla?  Would it be the style that allows for approval, because grok is in use already, somewhat, and its usage is why the AI was given that name.

Not really.  There was a construction attempt, but my older brother (lets call him "Chet") kept calling it the "Polish Nuke" then told on me before I could launch and I got a parental beat down.  Chet probably saved a few of my digits, tho.

Polish Nuke - new band name?

dang, south austin is absolutely lousy with elon's #fauxobotaxi test vehicles... walked 30 minutes to pick up a rental car, and saw six of them already, all doing <25 mph with humans behind the wheel this one was doing a simulated pickup or dropoff

Somewhere in South Austin, @Guadaloopy is clawing at the door handles and pressing a hand-scrawled “HELP ME” sign against the driver’s side window of a slow-moving Tesla robotaxi.

Eh... O'Dowd got to to play his gotcha card, but like so many "gotchas" it's a surface-level critique that ignores nuance and important facts.  It ignores the "why" question.

Musk's 2019 statement alludes to the fact that Waymo's solution will not work outside of a geo-fenced area.  Their system will only work in meticulously mapped areas.

Re: the current statement - Tesla's robotaxi will use geo-fencing for two purposes:

  1. Keep vehicles inside of approved test area.
  2. Avoid intersections and interchanges that are more likely to cause issues with the system.

The important question and distinction is why each of these systems use geo-fencing.  Waymo uses it because their system literally cannot work outside of the geo-fenced areas.  Tesla is using it to limit the operation of the vehicles to an approved test region and to maximize the system's opportunity for success within the test region.

How to turn right, the Tesla way

Oh please. Tesla is doing this because FSD the way they are making it cannot work period. They are picking "safe" areas because they are the ones they are training ultra highly on. This is simply moving the goalposts AGAIN.

But seriously - given how he throws money around, them burning through that kind of cash is not that crazy. I mean that crazy big data center powered by portable generators. Them lighting cash on fire wouldn't shock me in the least.

If Elon hadn't seemingly trashed his relationship with Trump, I'm not sure xAI would be a bad financial bet.  An unregulated, uncensored AI with manipulated training data and market dominance would be a huge tool for authoritarianism and really help cement whatever narrative you wanted to prevail into the foreseeable future.  The big beautiful bill already is providing the unregulated part.  Elon is already happily providing the (somewhat) uncensored w/manipulated data part.  If he can stay/return to Trump's good graces and have xAI be used throughout the federal government and otherwise be given competitive advantages against other options, he could achieve a market dominance.  We are still in the VHS/Betamax phase with AI.  A thumb on the market's table could certainly increase an AI platform's odds of being a winner.

That assumes that AI ends up being a major profit vehicle. It could just be too foundational a product that the benefits are reaped by society and while some businesses make some money, the bulk go by the wayside.

Think Airlines - Where are Continental, Pan Am, NWA, Eastern, etc

Think Computers - Where are Gateway, Compaq (ok, HP, but still), etc?

There are many others.

Good listen presenting this thesis - https://www.profgalloway.com/a-new-ai-world/

Is it right? Maybe, maybe not, but when all of the AI companies can do just about the same things, there might not be a winner but the people.

If that comes to pass, I think people will just pick the AI that matches the world in which they think or want to exist.  Just how they choose their other trusted information sources (fox or msnbc vs reuters, social media influencers, etc...)

You are dead fucking wrong.

There are three economic constituencies in this world: 1) rational actors, 2) meme stock investors/bros/koolaid drinkers, and 3) larger investors who ride and exploit the trends of group 2.

Groups 2 and 3 would keep the value of "Flaming Bag of Dog Shit Enterprises, with a Tech Bro Leader who says lots of Tech Bro stuff" near the top of the charts.  Actual commercial value has nothing to do with it.  Tesla may end up having shit for actual commercial value, yet will remain one of the most valuable companies on earth, because meme stocks/bros/exploiters.

100%.  It's going to become like a Nestle of shitty "tech-ish" brands.  Each of which functions to conceal the shittiness of the other brands in the portfolio, while simultaneously being a shit brand itself.  It'll be a conglomeration of shit brands doing this to each other to avoid any negativity and boost total stock price to irrational and insane levels disconnected from any actual value:
