This is what's already happening: Layoffs lead to National Parks cutting hours, limiting services National Parks across the country are cutting hours, cancelling cave tours, closing visitor centers and warning of other cutbacks following Trump administration cuts to the federal workforce. Park advocates and fired employees have been predicting those impacts for weeks, but a string of social media posts from park managers made after the Feb. 14 cuts appear to be the first formal acknowledgements. A Facebook post from the tiny Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Colorado announcing service cuts drew more than 10,000 comments. "I think it's going to be a very rough spring," said Cassidy Jones, a former park service ranger who now works for the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association. Among other parks, Saguaro National Park in Tucson announced that it was closing its two visitors centers on Mondays starting Feb. 24. At Yosemite National Park, officials announced they're halting reservations for 577 coveted camping spots this summer. Effigy Mounds in Iowa said it's closing its visitor center two days a week until the summer. Online calendars for reservable tours in some parks show zero availability, a casualty of losing the rangers who led them. Carlsbad Caverns National Park has cancelled its guided tours, and announced that in March it will be ending self-guided tours. Visitors to other parks are also noting staffing problems, including at Grand Canyon National Park, where terminations cut deeply into the employees who staff the entrance stations, leading to long lines last weekend. February 24Feb 24 When you say "deliberately planned," in terms of capacity limits, do you mean reducing numbers of visitors to NPs so those in the administration can say, "see no one visits the parks?" or to reduce revenue received by parks, or what? These parks are such treasures that I would really like to take Elon on a tour of one this spring, especially when the bears and their cubs come out of hibernation. I think he would be dumbstruck at the beauty of one of nature's creatures...and I am pretty sure I can outrun him. I'll ask after he's been fired or resigned or whatever, but this line in the article from a week ago above speaks volumes about what's already happening: "Carlsbad Caverns National Park has cancelled its guided tours and announced that in March it will be ending self-guided tours." If there are no guided or self-guided tours, Carlsbad is going to be effectively closed. My kid's scout troop were going to be going through there this summer on their way back from Philmont. and it was on our list to this summer. If they are canceling hundreds of the best camping spots in Yosemite, this is out to punish the NPS and or justify trying to close down parks like that. February 24Feb 24 Will be interesting to see what is eventually done with National park land without anyone to administer/steward them. The small government answer to national parks has been conservation easements in the past. Encumber the land with an easement held by a conservation group that prevents it from being subdivided or otherwise developed and get a tax break for the difference in its “highest and best use” value (developed) and its value with the encumbrance. Then you get to enjoy it as your own personal private wilderness with little/no cost of ownership. There is no stipulation that it needs to be open to the public, even though the public are indirectly paying for it through lost tax revenue. If it were up for auction and you had a serious tax liability and access to a few billion dollars, you could buy the Grand Canyon for several billion, put a conservation easement on it, get several billion in tax breaks and wind up owning it for treefiddy, more or less. Great little vacation spot for a billionaire. Edited February 24Feb 24 by Goredho

I know nothing about employment law but I would prefer to be fired than resign unless there was a substantial $ package to resign. Perhaps even fully payable upon resignation. If Congress decides to not fund long term resignation packages, that isn't Elon's problem. I would also think long term that perhaps we will see a Dem president and congress one day that would want to make fired fed employees whole as opposed to those forced to resign. Maybe both would be treated equally but who know. However we all know that many Americans live month to month, if not paycheck to paycheck. It's easier said than done to tell someone to accept a firing with no severance pay. (Not talking about your friend here.)

Before my dad was eligible for the free senior pass I'd bought one for him and his bitch of a wife for 2 or 3 years straight.
