When it came out the premise just seemed really depressing and I wasn’t up for it. On top of that it was all in Korean with subtitles so it was gonna be a hard sell with the wife.

Find a copy of 'Series 7: The Contenders', it's over 20 years old, but it's Amerkan so they speak English.

I don’t think you’re far off. I agree with the others that stated they’ve heard almost all of the same jokes before. I kept checking the release date to make sure I hadn’t already watched it. I think he’s hit his ceiling and he doesn’t really have anything new to say. I guess a sitcom is next if his stand up material is drying up.

His Christmas Special on Paramount was much funnier. I won’t spoil it, but there’s a very funny story about Opryland.

Andrew Scott lost again for Ripley (to Colin Farrell). The fact that he’s not going to be recognized at a major award show for that role is a travesty.

He used some of the jokes in his SNL monologue.

He’s been great in pretty much everything I’ve ever seen him in.

For example:

Fleabag

Sherlock

1917

Band of Brothers

His Dark Materials

etc.

Sherlock

1917

Band of Brothers

Have seen all of these and agree that he is a very talented actor. Lot of talent in that age group and sometimes that's the way it goes some years with awards.

So, have a rec that I did a search for mentions but came up empty: Vincenzo.

It's a kdrama and you may think I'm giving a thumbs up to a female romance movie on a mostly male message board, but I think it's more of a dark comedy-korean style. We loved it. Watched it with subtitles (*I like getting the original actor voices and emotions) and the male lead (**Song Joong-ki) and female lead (Jeon Yeo-been) have an excellent supporting cast. It's 20 episodes and has been out for awhile but we really enjoyed it for the overall cinematography, the character arc/development,, the comedy (some of which you might have to have had some awareness/viewing history of korea/korean entertainment cause there are a few oblique references). It's not a rom-com by any means and I wish we had Hulu in addition to Netfilx because the screenwriter has another show that preceded Vincenzo called The Fiery Priest that has returned for a short second season and I may have to subscribe just to watch it.

Due to the longer episodes/season, Vincenzo gives the writer time to develop the story and the actors time to nail their characters. It's not perfect but it's better than many of the stateside shows I've seen recently.

*I know that some films/series from other countries are dubbed even in the home country due to regional dialects etc, but most of the shows from Korea that I've watched seem to not do that and the english dubbing bothers me enough that I prefer subtitles even if the translation could be better.

**Okay, okay he's very very good looking and that didn't hurt my appreciation for this series.

Welcome back! You were sorely missed.

I watched The Breakthrough about Swedish double killing that ends up using Genealogist to help solve it.

Kinda meh, but went by pretty quick cause i think its 4 40min or so episodes.

I wouldn't shoot it up your list

I’m ready to do some house cleaning on all my subscriptions. Is there anything new on Netflix that is “must-see” before I axe it?

I love Lucifer. Glad Netflix is bringing it back for Season 4.

Great show.

Got a good binge going. Starting season 5 now.

Knocked out 4 in maybe 2 weeks?

Can’t remember the last time we had a solid multi-season binge.

After several episodes, we look at the time and go, ‘Damn, we need to sleep.’

Does Netflix not ask if you’re still watching anymore?”

If you like Korean shows check out

Chef and My Fridge:  it’s a talk show, variety show, chef competition with a guest celeb judge.  They go to their house and empty their fridge and the chefs have to cook dishes with them.  It’s a very weird show .

Singles Inferno.  It’s a Korean dating show that’s so bad it’s funny.  Nothing happens between the men and women.

Just started watching the Godless series.  I’m a couple of episodes in and liking it so far.  It’s a gritty, pretty violent western.  Jeff Daniels leads a band of outlaws and Sam Waterston is a lawman trying to bring him in. Lots of raping and pillaging so far.

Godless was a great watch.  Scoot McNairy was really good in it (later learned he went to The Shelton School in Dallas where my oldest son also attended).

Pretty sure Jack McCoy was not in Godless.

Good show though.

If you had already rec'd it on this very long thread, I do apologize as the search function on this website does miss things; but we were thoroughly entertained with this series. I was actually a little surprised that I couldn't find a discussion but then again I think it initially aired stateside as the US was coming out of the worst of covid in 2021 and the algorithm for Netflix suggestions is also not the greatest. The lawyers (paging @TwiceHorn @Brisketexan @Ghost of LL et al) on Surly ought to give it a watch just for the courtroom scene(s) and a couple of other legal maneuverings that were amusing. Thumbs up from us and I now have my eye on both the screenwriter, Park Jae-beom and the director, Kim Hee-won as ones to watch for future endeavors.

There is nothing to apologize for.

I don’t know why there was no talk of this show. I swear I had mentioned it before, but there is no evidence.

I thought maybe I was mistaken and searched my phone. Only thing I found was an email from Netflix back in 2021 reminding me to finish the watch

Thank you for taking the time--I didn't know that thread existed and will now have a few more things to watch!

Since series set in Korea has been under discussion, I did notice last night that season 2 of The Recruit begins at the end of the month (Jan 30). Noah Centineo is the lead; first season got mid reviews but the second (shorter--six episodes) season is has cast Teo Yoo (Past Lives, Leto, and a really funny romcom called Love To Hate You) as the connection Centineo has in Seoul when tasked with an operation in South Korea. Yoo is pretty good so I may watch.

Sidenote: I really hate the trend toward truncated seasons now though. I get that some folks prefer it, but why should I care about a story when the characters are so undeveloped and underwhelming. It doesn't have to be a years long Days Of Our Lives soap opera, but Succession was four seasons of ~10 episodes each and rather enthralling. A one or two year commitment of about 16-20 episodes seems like a better long term strategy than a short and awful series but what do I know. I may end up watching that Lucifer series above because it looks interesting and it's got a long play.

eventually they'll just slim it down to one 2-hour episode but instead of it being available at home, they'll schedule it to play somewhere public where you can purchase tickets and concessions.

touché my friend, touché.

Just finished watching 100 Years of Solitude. Loved Gabo's books, so was prepared to be disappointed to a degree. I was with Love in time of Cholera the movie. Really, nothing beats your imagination in Gabo's mystic realism world.

This series is really good, and great character development. Recommend.

By the way, Garcia Marquez's collection of works was bought by UT some years ago and is at the Harry Ransom Center.

Just watched The Lost Children and damn the story is crazy. I am high on some edibles but I want to read more about it. Amazon jungle as a human sounds insane for that amount of time

The final season(6) of Lucifer kinda ruined the show for me. Like the last season of GOT.

but watch it till the end if you must.

I know we're on the same page when it comes to entertainment quality.

So how are the titties?

S2 of Night Agent was good, but not on par with Season 1

Season 3 looks like they're going to dive full in on a Trump-like president.  So...yay?

I liked season one of Night Agent.  I have spent most of season 2 laughing at it.  I’m too far in to quit now though, but I can’t see sitting through a 3rd season.

New OJ murders documentary series dropped today. Is there anything new to add at this point?

Seriously who gives a shit anymore. Does the younger generation even know about it other than maybe knowing that a football player killed his wife and had a car chase?. It was only a big deal at the time because of Court TV and an early sort of reality entertainment. The younger people have had instant entertainment their entire lives.

Well, they seem to be trying to clean up Fuhrman's image so far in the first episode.

No 24.  It's a Norwegian film about the Norwegian Resistance during WW2.  Really good movie.  Obviously, its in Norwegian, but I dubbed into English and had no issues. Currently sitting at 94% on RT and 7.5 on Imdb.
