June 13Jun 13 I also enjoyed the ocean gate doc. I knew most of the stuff in there. I didn’t know the details of the people leaving which was pretty interesting. I can’t believe they never had a successful test of the last design but said fuck it let’s build it anyway. I’ve never heard of using carbon fiber in a pressure situation before or since. Metal bends before it breaks so you have a chance to do something before failure. Carbon fiber looks fine then fails.
June 14Jun 14 The acoustic testing clearly shows continual failure. How could so many smart people be so dumb?

I didn’t get his obsession with making it carbon fiber. Is there a weight problem in the water? That was rhetorical. The guy was just a rich dipshit that wanted to say he did something different so he had meaning in his life.

He had his ego but he really thought he could make a new global tourist industry with cheap carbon fibre submersibles. His obsession overlooked all the problems. The doc with Josh gates relating his experience going down in it and his shear terror says it all.

One of the biggest expenses for a submersible is the support vessel. A lighter submersible can get by with a smaller (read cheaper) support vessel and lighter duty support equipment (e.g. cranes).
June 15Jun 15 Thank you to folks who mentioned Tires. It isn't something I would've watched otherwise (and probably wouldn't have even heard of or recognized). I ended up watching both seasons over 24 hours- really enjoyed it.

June 16Jun 16 Heh season 1 of tires was their skits with a loose story.Season 2 is a little more meshed out in the story. They’re both great though
June 16Jun 16 @Scraps or @Helobious, watched the Astroworld shit yet? Only 80 minutes, that’s my perfect time crunch.

June 16Jun 16 The part I missed about astroworld was that a 9yo died in that…Wtf?!?Who is bringing their kiddo into the pit much less even bringing them to that kind of party

Lumped in there with the fake rumors about needles in candy, and the true story about Adam Walsh, and combine it all with the beginnings of 24-hour Cable News TV and you had a mixture for making our parents paranoid. Don't forget the Atlanta kids disappearing. It's 10 pm - Do you know where your children are? One year my Mom made us take our candy to a place that was running Halloween candy through an x-ray machine.

Yeah, that aspect of the story reminded me of Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos and the fucked up aspects of startup alpha founder culture. Otherwise intelligent people drunk on a dangerous cocktail of hubris, denial and delusion.

June 20Jun 20 finished up dept q last night. it was excellent throughout and did a great job launching into (hopefully) multiple seasons. it's based on a book series and has already been made into several (danish?) movies, so they should have plenty of material. akram is the man.

I really loved it for all the various dynamics of cast, story and dialog. It address some serious issues but wasn't afraid to have fun in the process. Some truly fantastic chemistries between various actors.

If you haven’t seen it you might check out River on Amazon Prime. Stellan Skarsgard stars in it with a host of familiar faces from other shows. It’s 10 years old but I’d never heard of it. June 23Jun 23 Really enjoyed Department Q. I thought that Morck's character progression was impressively done. He's still a pompous ass at the end but much more likeable. Overall, the character arcs are excellent and yes, Akram is the man.

June 24Jun 24 Anyone watch "The Waterfront "? Watched the first episode last night. Intriguing. Need to know whether to stick with it. Also, Poop Cruise comes out today

Also, Poop Cruise comes out today I watched the first couple of episodes this weekend. I wasn't sold on it at the end of the second episode because it felt a little too much like a soap opera, and I've got a bunch of other shows on my list. Ping me if you still like it after the fourth one, and I'll pick it back up.
June 25Jun 25 Probably super late to the party but The Saint of Second Chances about the Veecks, mainly Mike, was really good. Came out in 2023 I think.

My wife hadn't seen it, and she thought it was great for a three-hour miniseries. It's on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and Freeve. Wow. Just started this. Thank you again for the rec. Csb the bad guy (Toby Kebbell) is my little brother’s friend.

June 25Jun 25 Im in the middle of it and rolling my eyes at these people "shit in a bag??? How repulsive I am not doing that!!" "Pissing in the shower OMG!!!"The heat and smell would be horrible but come the fuck on. Shitting in a red bag is probably better than using a fucking portacan at a sporting event/concert lmao
June 25Jun 25 “Trainwreck: Poop Cruise” was a well done, cringy , not too long, documentary of the Carnival Triumph - the ship that lost all power in the Gulf, resulting in pee and poop flowing through the ship. Absolutely horrendous situation.
