October 30Oct 30 Oh yeah, that too. Spoiler When the pres was flipping through his handy WW3 book, I kept waiting for "Wait, before I pick out a bombing package, shouldn't we know who to bomb first? Wouldn't China's be much different than Russia's which would be much different from North Korea's?" I think that point was covered. It didn’t really matter. What mattered is handicapping those who would take advantage of the opportunity. With a severely wounded US there other can go on the offensive unchecked. Even if Russia wasn’t the source, the first missile likely isn’t the last. If Chicago/DC/ Philly were nuked, Russia might see that as a chance to go on the offensive before they get blamed for it and get attacked. Prez needs to provide a response that hinders Russian capability whether they were the source or not. You can take our critical infrastructure (low loss of like, big handicap) or focus on military assets (limit strike capability) or go for biggest loss of life impact (eye for an eye). The US predicts Russia senses weakness and may decide to take a swing. Hit Russia and let everyone else know, now is not the time. Or same story for whatever superpower you think has the biggest risk benefit balance. It doesn’t have to be the correct target at first, it just needs to be justifiable. If you strike NK and it was Russias fault, you can pass the blame then destroy Russia. Or pick a package that wounds all the major powers. Hit NK / China / Russia all at one time. Nobody gets an advantage if they are all wounded. Then it is a race to recovery before anyone can invade anyone else.

November 9Nov 9 The Ed Gein series was a fucking disappointing ness from start to finish. If you don’t have enough material for 8 episodes then make it 3. Don’t randomly fill in dead dace with director cut info about psycho and Texas chainsaw massacre or random fantasy about the Bitch if Buchenwald. I hate that I watched the whole thing and didn’t drop it after 2 episodes.

Shannon is great in everything and Tom Wambsgans is the perfect actor to portray Guiteau. Also Offerman’s best performance since Fargo S2. The man was born to portray to Guilded Age characters.
November 11Nov 11 Watched. In waves and war doc. Pretty interesting to see on the alternative treatment front and hope it really does work in the long term. Having a lot of operator friends this one had some tears
November 11Nov 11 Sundown with Tim Roth, Charlotte Gainsbourg. The beginning seemed like white lotus derivative but the movie slowly reveals itself. Thought it was really well done and in the end you replay the movie in your mind under the new frame of reference.
November 12Nov 12 Death by Lightning. What a profoundly sad show. By all accounts, Garfield was a salt of the earth type much like Lincoln. A worthy, if reluctant heir to his legacy. I think Offerman should win an Emmy. Betty Gilpin should get nominated. Shannon, Whigham, and Bradley Whitford are just so steady and competent that they really didn’t stick out. Kind of like a good offensive line. Edited November 12Nov 12 by billfromlaketravis

Talk about a really well done interesting story about an assassination we had no idea about…We both commented… wait Garfield was assassinated so close to Lincoln?!?Sent both of down the rabbit hole of their stories. The acting was really solid!

I for some reason thought he was closer to Teddy than Grant. I didn't realize he was only around 1880 and lasted that short. I don't know why I haven't learned more about it...but thought he was in for a year or more.
November 15Nov 15 House of Guinness was solid and worth the watch. It was a little more soapy than I would have liked. Kind of like Mad Men, there's too much soap opera bullshit and not enough history, business deals, ect. Don't get me wrong it was still pretty good though.
November 17Nov 17 In Waves and War. Wow, this was a great, but hard watch. I’ve lost two veteran comrades to “post combat complications” or other tap dancing euphemisms for suicide. Along with another very close friend and professional colleague who did not serve in the military. This doc focuses on vets who served in Seal teams and struggled with myriad debilitating issues of TBI, PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, survivors guilt, etc. That’s the difficult part; watching these warriors tell their stories and showing how their lives and relationships were impacted. It gets fascinating when showing the treatments consisting of psychedelic microdosing and guided trips run by an American in Mexico. I won’t spoil it by discussing the results, but I will say I hope this type of therapy gets more widespread acceptance and acceptance. I hope anyone struggling with any of these issues finds a path to relief from the symptoms and gets genuine healing and peace.
November 18Nov 18 Really enjoyed Death By Lightning. Chester Arthur seemed like a guy I would want to party with in his pre-presidency.

November 19Nov 19 If you were a fan of the original Squid Games made for TV drama, then you would probably like Squid Games the Challenge. They actually turned it into a game show. Currently there are 2 very watchable seasons on Netflix. The premise is the same don't die and win the money. The same games are used, and contestants are thinned out fairly quickly. The manner in which the losing contestants are removed is .... let's say is very effective. I wouldn't want to spoil for it you. We binged all of season 1 and currently almost done with season 2. It really doesn't matter if you start with season 2 first or season 1, there is no continuity between seasons. Both episode 1's are good and you'll get the idea quickly.

This show is goofy as fuck, but they learned what not to do in season 1 which was entertaining but a mess. Season 2 is much more polished but still retains a lot of the messiness that made season 1 amusing. The feigning death when they get "shot" is so dumb and funny.

November 19Nov 19 Will also give a thumbs up to Death by Lightning. Well done and just the right length. As mentioned, cast is excellent. My wife chose Wayward. The show was made by a they/them lesbian named Mae Martin, who is also the lead in the show. However, in this role they are playing a trans man. The show is OK. I'm not really buying the main character, and I don't think it's because they're playing a trans person (but I'll try to check my biases). I'm gonna keep watching because my wife chose the show and I have to. My wife is also very progressive, so I cannot let on that I don't like anything about the show because she'll assume it's because I'm transphobic. Anyway, if your wife suggests the show, I recommend that you pass on it.

It didn't show anyone any of that. It just ended. Like if Spoiler someone made a movie about a team full of underdogs who somehow made it to the national championship game, and the movie ended at the end of the first quarter with the score tied. But the last hour of the movie was the coin toss and opening kickoff from different points of view. The end.
November 19Nov 19 After reading Destiny of the Republic I had high hopes for Death by Lightning but was disappointed. The Giteau character was campy and the dialogue was really dumb. Nobody talked like these people in the late 1800s. Fucking this and fucking that. Just dumb and contrived. On the other hand that book, or really anything by Candice Millard is money.
