February 20, 20214 yr Just watched this episode, one of my favorite scenes. Tony orchestrates the entire thing and is barely able to contain his laughter as Silvio just goes off on this idiot kid. So fucking good. Then at the end when he tells the doctor "why don't you go fix a fucking dick or whatever he fuck it is you do".

February 23, 20214 yr I notice people often think that characters they hate are "bad casting." At the time Sopranos was cast, Robert Iler was a fat kid who definitely looked like he could be Tony's son. He thinned out and stayed pretty short, but if you don't think he did a fine job playing a kid with serious issues resulting from that fucked up environment, you've never been around teenagers from dysfunctional families who are spoiled rotten, full of self pity and dealing with depression.
February 23, 20214 yr I don’t know why, but one of my favorite lines was when AJ got caught peeing at the school and the first thing Tony says to him is “on your mother’s birthday?”

This. Not sure they could’ve cast someone more perfect for AJ. He’s the anti-Meadow. A total fuckup that gives his dad depression/anxiety. I’m sure it wasn’t all purposeful, but he was what that character needed to be.

February 26, 20214 yr Started this for my second watch last night. My girlfriend has never seen it. I watched this about 5 years ago. Can't wait to experience it again.
February 26, 20214 yr In the same boat here, Vic. I watched it during its original run on HBO, but have never done a re-watch on any episodes until I started up again last week. I don't know if its because my memory has grown fuzzy on a lot of the show's subtle details, or if I've just become jaded over the subpar offerings during the pandemic, but damn this show is fucking amazing.

February 26, 20214 yr also doing a rewatch. i just saw the 2nd season episode when chris is in the hospital and carmela comes to see him. she starts speaking about religion, and there's a quick cut to chris just hammering the morphine drip so he can tolerate her spiel. absolutely brilliant.

I’m midway thru S5 of the rewatch and enjoying it so much more than the first time. Attribute that to binging which keeps the storylines fresh. Did The Wire a couple of weeks ago ... hated to see that one end.

I am not sure how much I would enjoy it for a third time but I might give it a try some time this year.

March 10, 20214 yr Tony discussing Vito's "condition" with Dr. Melfi ... "He's become one of my best earners. He's come from behind ..."

March 14, 20214 yr Rewatching this, something that jumps out— the insane amount of Coke the family goes through. I’m sure there was a placement, but damn. Three liters or cans at every place setting in the scenes at home. One of the only ways the series feels dated, I think that in the 2010s or 2020s Carm would be the type to keep the sugary stuff out of the house (not all the pasta and wine though).

March 15, 20214 yr I rewatched with my 15 year old son and it is so much better being able to binge it. I had forgotten so much over the years. One of my favorite lines is a throw away from Christopher after one of the thousand times he's late, "Sorry I'm late. The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive." I'm pretty sure it's the first time he ever gives an actual reason for being late, and then it's a bull shit line from Born to Run, which is of course about getting the fuck out of New Jersey. And it even makes it better that Sil from the E Street band is sitting right next to him. So good.

March 15, 20214 yr I remember reading at one point that Chase wanted that black screen to last for a few minutes, until the HBO logo came on and the next program started. But they couldn't get around not showing the credits. (Tony's dead)

March 15, 20214 yr The fact that we're still talking about the ending 14 years later is exactly what David Chase wanted. What frustrates me about the ending detractors is they offer no suggestions for alternative endings. They just state, I hated the ending. How was it supposed to end? Sil comes out of the coma and joins Tony for a cigar by the pool with the ducks?! It's not a happy show. People shouldn't expect a gratifying ending.

I didn't make the connection that it is Frankie Valli playing Rusty Millio - I wonder if there are any references or jokes around that in the show? Also loved in the Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti (in the same scene where the Vito actor plays a different character prior to Vito's introduction to the show), Christopher shoots the worker at the bakery in the foot (as his character Spider was shot in the foot in Goodfellas). maybe similar to that - Tony with his bottle of orange juice in his botched hit, calling back to the oranges in the Godfather movies. That connection between oranges and death carried through those movies (or at least I guess until the orchard scene). I think in The Sopranos, eggs play a similar role. Which works well given the whole.. birds thing. I need to watch again. Edited March 15, 20214 yr by Celery Man

The owner of the Indian casino that tried to intervene in the planned protest on behalf of Tony wanted Frankie Valli to play the casino in return. Silvio had a relationship with Valli and was tasked with taking care of it at the end of the episode.
March 15, 20214 yr Frankie Valli is a decent little actor. Good gravitas in the Tony B dinner meeting and one of the better death scenes.

Big part of his discussion was the fact that the show turned the real ice cream shop into an orange toned space. Orange everywhere.

Or worse, we see Tony's brains splatter all over the onion rings. Carm yells, "Oh my Gawd, Tony!" Meadow starts ranting about Italian-American stereotyping. AJ holds his knees to his chest and rocks back and forth, talking about how Tony's shooting was going to be a set back in his therapy, when things finally were going so well. And Member's Only guy drops the gun and walks out in a parody of the Godfather. I think we got the ending we needed.
March 15, 20214 yr I think Weiner learned a thing or two from Chase. Mad Men's ending was perfect. An ending Alan Sepinwall to the casual fan could understand and enjoy. Instead of ending the show with Don's epiphany, Weiner went ahead and rolled the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" ad. Without the ad, people would be complaining about the ending for 5+ years. What was Don's big idea?! I must know. Every minute detail in art must be explained to me or I won't like it! Edited March 15, 20214 yr by billfromlaketravis

This is a great take and it was such a good ending. Because it fit right into the whole ironic detachment of the series. Don, in the midst of a total come apart and existential crisis, runs away to find something meaningful. He digs through layer after layer of his psyche to find his inner self and actually experience something significant. And deep down in the middle of his soul, what does he find? The stupid Coke ad. And he's happy.
