July 18, 20187 yr I don't think Kawhi has any idea where he wants to play. First he said Lakers only, then maybe the Clippers are fine, then Philly was fine too, then not Lakers because lebron, then not clippers because lebron.

July 18, 20187 yr Very small chance Brooklyn could have enough room for Kawhi, Butler, and Irving next year.
July 18, 20187 yr Otherwise not that bad of a return for the Spurs. Edited July 18, 20187 yr by HtownHorn
July 18, 20187 yr He's giving up more money than just what his pay would be. If he signs the $190 with Toronto he loses what $90 mil to taxes? And if he goes to the Lakes he's taking a chop of the $140 for CA taxes. So in reality he's giving up close to $100 mil?
July 18, 20187 yr are Toronto players paid in US$ or Canadian? Huge difference and I'm guessing socialist Canadian taxes for super rich are very high. So, more losses for KL?

So, more losses for KL? My guess is youre paid every 2 weeks in the NBA. depending where you do your "work", is where your taxes go. so a 2 week span of 6 home games in Toronto, KL probably doesnt lose much when it comes to exchange rate. now a 1.5 week road trip out west, paying those taxes in Cali then getting your check to exchange in Canada, probably leaves very little left. Im probably wrong

Wanted nothing to do with them. It became toxic for both sides. Do you allow money to control your life? KD took paycuts to go somewhere he wanted. Dirk took paycuts because he liked Dallas. These dudes are not worried about money for the rest of their lives when you are making that salary and endorsements. Kawhi seems to want to play for LA. He will gladly make a little less to be able to do it. And that's fine. If he's not happy and wants to go elsewhere, then okay. It's the way he and his camp handled it. From start to finish, they tripped over their dicks at every point. The way they played their hand was utter stupidity and now he has to go report to another country. If his camp handles this professionally and with the Spurs instead of using every chance to try and burn them and build their own narrative (which they failed to do), he may find himself in a Philly or possibly in a Clippers uniform. Instead two years of his absolute prime are wasted. Nobody wins in this, everybody loses........ except Zaza. But Kawhi and his camp lost the biggest, IMO. This is about the last destination they wanted.

July 18, 20187 yr Canadian players income is 100% taxable in Canada. It's no different than being an American. The US and Canada tax worldwide income.

July 18, 20187 yr Looks like a good deal to me, not sure what some spurs fans think they will get for a disgruntled superstar. If you break even or get something decent consider it a win. Especially when he walks next year and leaves Toronto then it will be a definite win to have derozan.

July 18, 20187 yr I like this deal for both sides. DDR seems the type of player that would flourish under the Spurs system. Celtics, Lakers and 76ers didn't want to the trade their most valuable assets. Toronto wasn't going anywhere with DDR/Lowry combo. Worst case scenario, they just fast forward the rebuild by one year. In 2020, a 34 yr old Lowry comes off the book and they will have a clean slate. Contract year Kawhi is going to be a beast, replacing LeBron as the best player in the East.
July 18, 20187 yr 57 minutes ago, Chapo said: Contract year Kawhi is going to be a beast, replacing LeBron as the best player in the East. There's definitely something to that. Toronto was arguably better than Boston last year, their boogeyman is headed West, and they just added, unequivocally, the best player in the East when healthy. On paper, they have a real shot at getting to the Finals... I just can't see it unfolding like that. Kawhi will be some combination of disgruntled/injured/standoffish/just going through the motions, Brad Stevens will work back in their injured guys smoothly, Philly will be a year more mature with Embiid in better shape, etc.. Once Kawhi leaves, it might be a decade before they have another player as good as DD (which is more a comment on how hard it is to get and keep elite players in Canada, not to how good DD is). July 18, 20187 yr You think Raptor teammates won't ask Danny Green what really happened with Kawhi? Kawhi wanted the beaches of California and had beef with his locker room, so the Spurs sent him to Canada with a teammate. It's more likely that Kawhi spends 2018-19 sulking than balling out of control.
July 18, 20187 yr He is going to lose 100 mil on this deal. I hope his “uncles” are happy. Message: don’t fuck with the Spurs.
July 18, 20187 yr I hope there's a 30 for 30 on what NOT to do in a contract year when you're all but certain getting a super max barring losing a leg in a shark attack

Average tax rate he would be paying for each in 2017: Texas: 39.9% California: 52% + LA city taxes Canada (Ontario): 53.17% On 20 million salary, that's about a 2.5m difference.

And SA STILL would have offered him the supermax this offseason--after a year of drama--had he shown ANY desire to be a Spur. He didn't lose the supermax; he and his team opted to punt on it. When they made that decision is up for debate. I don't buy that he was all-in up until the medical team disagreements and Pop and Tony's comments. He can absolutely star in a 30 for 30 on how to burn every single bridge on your way out.

July 18, 20187 yr On Toronto's end, this has been bouncing around the interwebs: 4 best players in Raptor's history: Vince Carter - absolutely quit on his team mid-season to get the fuck out of Toronto T-Mac - left at the first opportunity Chris Bosh - chose to be the third wheel in Miami over being a legend in Toronto DD - committed to Toronto long-term, completely bought into the city and the culture; traded for a rental Remember that in 4 years when Toronto is a dumpster fire, and people are starting to wonder how a team would look in Vegas. And we all need to remember this the next time someone complains about a lack of player loyalty or players trying to play where they want to play.

This is not a good look at for the TOR franchise. AT this point their best case scenario is they trade him to LA before the deadline and get a couple young guys or picks. This is a very calculated risk on Toronto's part. The Raptors were the #1 seed last year and bonked out before reaching the ECF. Fired the COTY. LeBron has gone west and Boston is building a juggernaut. Philadelphia looks better long-term than Toronto. Kyle Lowry is 33-ish. Toronto is rolling the dice on a 1-year rental (perhaps) to try and reach the Finals next season. If Kawhi is healthy and doesn't act like a jackass -- yes, neither is a given -- then the Raptors have a better shot to do that than they did yesterday.

For most teams, it would be well worth the risk for the potential of being really good for one season over being a nice, cute, likeable team for a few years. I'm just not sure that Toronto is one of those teams. Dumping one of the few stars to ever buy in to playing basketball in Canada is going to have long-reaching ramifications. I'm also the first to say that the team who acquired the best player is the team who won the trade, so I'm admittedly contradicting myself. It's just a weird situation; one that I can't really picture a happy ending.
