Not wasting money opening up a big venue (like FEC) and having to pay concessions workers, lighting crew, ushers, etc. when you only have 4K there?  Makes sense to me.  It's about the right size to host an event that's usually less attended than a Cedar Park girls bb game (mostly because the girls' parents and many relatives live nearby).

They do this to make it "appear" "neutral".  UConn (Storrs) has hosted many regionals in Bridgeport (less than 90 min from campus).  Oregon State is hosting 2 regionals in Portland in 2019 and 2020.  Zero Bridgeport regionals were neutral, as we know from being sent there a few times in the past few tournaments.

A&M and UT or Baylor are all attendance draws to a Cedar Park/Austin regional.

All things considered, getting a home regional would be very nice if we can keep Baylor from laying claim to it.

Hard to host a game at the Drum if it's a pile of rubble.

Pretty sure we will have a new arena before the FEC is razed.

It's still very rare to use a team's home arena to host a regional.  They are supposed to be "neutral."  You use home arenas for rounds 1 and 2 in NCAAWBB. Sweet 16 and Elite 8 are at neutral regional sites.  For instance - DePaul WBB play at McGrath-Phillips Arena but will "host" a regional at Wintrust, where the DePaul men play.  Kentucky has hosted at Rupp Arena but they play at Memorial Coliseum.

The only odd exception I saw on the list was them using Moody Coliseum has a regional host and SMU was the host. But Dallas Sports Commission is co-hosting that one.
