Well, hearing him reference Kevin Durant a couple of times when talking about Tre Johnson certainly will help the hype train.

I know we've had plenty of 5-stars before but I think the skillset Johnson has is special for a freshman. This isn't just an athletic freak who is a 5-star because of testing numbers.

Man the Big 12 was tough, while the ACC has been a shit show for a while.

Interesting stat.  Yeah, the Big 12 was brutal, but we stood out even beyond that.  We took on more serious road noncon games than everyone.

247 Injury update on Texas freshman Nic Codie

Nic Codie's senior season of high school ended before the Texas high school playoffs because of a knee injury. Rodney Terry said the Longhorns are going to be careful bringing their 6-foot-9-inch signee back to the court.

While there are still eight weeks until the Texas men's basketball team tips off the 2024-25 season in Las Vegas against Ohio State, Longhorns' coach Rodney Terry and the coaching staff have been hard at work to make sure a new-look roster is ready to go.

True freshman Nic Codie will be a part of that mix at some point. Codie suffered a knee injury in mid-February, just before the start of Carrollton Newman Smith's playoff run.

The 247Sports four-star signee (No. 81 overall, No. 13 power forward) is with the team. There is still work/recovery to be done before he's ready to take the floor with the Longhorns.

"We're going to be real cautious with Nic," Terry said of the 6-foot-9-inch, 200-pound Codie. "He has a high ceiling of being a really good player in the future.

"He doesn't have a great basketball frame because he's a guy that was one of those late bloomers. His best basketball is way ahead of him. He didn't do anything with us this summer. It'll probably be a good portion of the early part of the fall before he has really hard contact. We don't want to rush him. We're going to move really slow with him." — ERIC HENRY

i’d like to see the highlight reel that a lineup of kerwin roach, weaver, kai jones, jaxson hayes, and jericho sims could put together. here’s to weaver being the first one of these guys to realize his potential.

Believe you might be right. The heart, attitude and athleticism are all there.

SEC is going to be a fun change of pace. it’s still gonna be a really good basketball conference, just without all of the trips to the frozen prairie tundra in the dead of winter. you add in rivalries with a&m and arkansas (and ou), plus beard and barnes coaching rival teams, kentucky on the schedule…yeah. i loved the grind of the big xii for what it was, but this is going to be fun.

Saw somebody discussing this Texas team on a podcast and he said the roster makeup reminds him a lot of past Houston teams.

A bunch of really long, athletic guards that can create problems on both ends.

It will be interesting if we play a similar style. I.e. crash the boards where we have an athletic/length advantage on the perimeter.

Spoke with a family member of Dylan Disu. Says Aiden who is a senior in high school is much better. Aiden is only 6'7" but Dylan grew his freshman year in college so it is pretty likely that Aiden will do the same. I got the feeling that we aren't pushing hard enough.

We haven't even offered unless I missed something.

Probably not as he isn't ranked real high. I assume Dylan wasn't either as he was only 6'5" in high school. But Dylan grew 4" between his senior year in high school and his sophomore year in college. So, it would surprise me if Aiden didn't do the same.

Don't worry. I don't think there's anyone here who would hammer home his opinion that Chris Beard > Rodney Terry again and again and again...

It’s almost like some people are actually rooting for that to happen

If someone told me there were two more passive-aggressive pussies on this board than the two of you, I wouldn't believe it.

Carryover from Beard? Feels like we’ve seen that before.

When was this Hall of Fame Series game with Ohio State added? Adding NC State to the OOC is strong especially on the road? Did their big guy graduate, that guy was the tits in the post-season.

Well first off, we didn't "add" NC State.  It's part of the SEC-ACC challenge.  It's not like we could say no.

We've known about the Ohio State game since May

So 5 real noncon games (Ohio State, UConn, NC State, and the two games in Brooklyn). I'll chalk up Uconn as a probable L. I've seen Ohio State in some 'in consideration for top 25' lists but haven't seen them in any top 25's. That should be a good test to open the season. NC State on the road could be somewhat tricky but on paper Texas should win that game. Syracuse is very meh with a likely matchup against Tech if we win that game.

11-2 is very doable in noncon and would be a solid start to the year. Anything better would be a very good sign.

Aiden ended up committing to Holy Cross.

Don’t we have 9 and 9?? Or does someone else’s schedule show 7 and 10?

Texas basketball report: What I saw Saturday

Had the opportunity to watch the Texas basketball team practice Saturday.

One, the roster is what OTF had been told and expected ... night and day from last season.

Takeaways from Saturday

Tre Johnson is every bit as expected. He's a first rounder that could be a lottery pick. The offensive skill level was known, but what jumped out was his competitiveness against older players. Even some s*&! talking and on court leadership on a much older team. That was both interesting and fun to see.

Kadin Shedrick is healthy, and looks like a different player. Much more confident, challenged shots at the rim and played with improved physicality. If he gets more decisive in the post on the catch, he can make a big jump in year two at Texas.

I will continue to say it - Chendall Weaver will end up with a pro career. He's such a high end competitor, and has improved as an offensive player. How much, we will have to see in games early in the season. He makes so many winning plays on both ends. Plays so well without the ball.

Texas has multiple guys that will known down catch and shoot three's - team should be 36-37%. Jordan Pope, Tre Johnson, Julian Larry, Tramon Mark and Jayson Kent.

Arthur Kaluma's perimeter defense in the ball screen game, and traffic rebounding will be one of the key's to maximizing this season.

The guards have so much more wingspan length and height. Much more switchable defense on the perimeter. Should traffic rebound better from the guard spot, and that will be key this season.

Texas essentially has eight starter level players. CG Jordan Pope, SG Tramon Mark, SG Tre Johnson, PF Arthur Kaluma, C Kadin Shedrick, PG Julian Larry, G Chendall Weaver and PF Jayson Kent.

Tough to see Larry and Kent not being on the floor a lot together this season. They have good chemistry playing together for multiple seasons. IMO, those two with Weaver would be really productive off the bench together.

Devon Pryor has a lot of upside - he just needs to keep developing. A much improved player, and will have a role. He has career in basketball potential.

The 6-10.5 freshman big man Jamie Vinson is a year away, but has a real chance if he remains patient.

That was a very competitive practice early in the season.

OTF projected starting lineup

CG Jordan Pope, 6-1, junior

SG Tramon Mark, 6-5, senior

SG Tre Johnson, 6-6, freshman

PF Arthur Kaluma, 6-7, senior

C Kadin Shedrick, 6-11, senior

The bench

G Chendall Weaver, 6-3, junior

PF Jayson Kent, 6-7, senior

PG Julian Larry, 6-2.5, senior

C Ze'ryk Onyema, 6-9, senior

SF Devon Pryor, 6-7, sophomore

The pro's

Tre Johnson - NBA first round pick, and maybe lottery.

Tramon Mark - NBA two-way possibility, or high-end overseas

Julian Larry and Jayson Kent - high-end overseas

Kadin Shedrick - high-end overseas for sure. Probably in a training camp. Could elevate with big senior season

Chendall Weaver - will will himself to a career in hoops. Some NBA scouts through recently have him pegged as potential NBA role player if he shoots it better this year, and his final season.

Arthur Kaluma - overseas

Devon Pryor - has potential to have a good career in hoops if he stays patient with his development.

I'm confused at "first round pick - maybe lottery"

If Tre doesn't grade out as a lottery pick he may not declare. The difference between rookie contracts at pick 20ish vs top 10 is millions of dollars.
