Hope both Hunter and Mitchell come back next year.

Sweet use of "dominate" as an adjective on a graphic a few minutes ago.

Probably because we have a bunch of new players in their 3rd game with the team who are still learning to play together.  Add in injuries as well.  Blowouts matter so you don’t want walk ons turning a 50 point game into a 25 point win.

Yeah you're totally right starters playing together and gelling is the most important thing. Only 3 guys from last years team back, I forget that in the portal era CBB is essentially just reshuffling the deck every year.

Cobott and Preston Clark still being left out of the party. Who does Texas need to schedule for them to score, Hutto High School?

Clark hit a free throw last night.

Overall I think this year's team has the potential to be a lot better than last year's team.  Better defending, better rebounding, better size, better roster construction. If the two teams played each other, I think 2025 would have the advantage at almost every position.

Point Guard

  • Hunter '24 = Pope '25 - This one is pretty close overall, but I give the slight edge to Pope due to FT% and lack of turnovers.
  • Abmas '24 < Johnson '25 - Abmas was good, but Johnson is better in almost every way.
  • Weaver '24 < Weaver '25 - Weaver has improved in all facets vs. last year
  • Horton '24 < Larry '25 - Larry has better defense, handles, vision, shot, everything

Forward

  • Mitchell '24 << Mark '25 - Mark is a drastically better all-around player.
  • Disu '24 > Kaluma '25 - Disu is better but it is close. Disu drifting out to the perimiter drove me crazy. Kaluma's approach with defense and rebounding leads to more wins.
  • Cunningham '24 < Kent '25 - Brock was a mess last year. The refs rightfully targeted him. He was a constant technical risk.

Center

  • Shedrick '24 << Shedrick '25 - A healthy Shedrick will be much improved
  • Onyema '24 << Onyema '25 - Onyema looks lighter on his feet and more comfortable this year

Other depth

  • Vinson and Pryor provide some depth that we didn't have last year.

The main edge I would give 2024 over 2025 is in overall athleticism.  Hunter and Mitchell are more athletic than their counterparts in 2025. But they are way behind in skill level.

Just the overall size for 2024-25 is hands down better than 2023-24 team.  They mentioned it last night - we started two 6'0 guards last year.

syracuse started the season at no.68 in kenpom and after two games (both wins) is already down in the 100’s.

add them to the list of cupcakes on our schedule. even if they suck, a beat down of syracuse on national tv will still be great.

slow, disjointed starts have been a problem:

the good news the halftime adjustments are working. need to do a better job coming out ready to play though.

I would also be interested to see minutes distribution based on half. The better players may just be playing more in the 2nd half.

up next we have syracuse, and let’s just say that melo ain’t walking through that door.

IMG_7497.jpeg

16 assists in 4 games for Larry and he's only playing 25 minutes a game.

When Mark returns, we need Larry playing 30-plus minutes a game because he's going to find our scorers in Mark, Johnson, and Kaluma.

Kaluma had a couple of nice dishes to his teammates last night, including one from the top of the arc that led to a layup. At season's start, was worried he'd be a black hole but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Team is wildly inconsistent but the effort is improving, particularly on the defensive end. They just need more time together.

At the risk of sounding like a sunshine pumper, I think we have more balance and scoring depth than even the EE squad from a couple of seasons ago. However, that team had two years to jell; this version will only have one.

Has anyone seen a prognosis on when Mark returns? As far back as October RT was saying he was “day to day.”

Thursday will tell us whether there is a real issue. No reason to play him the last three games while he healed.

Nothing official from the university. My guess is they'll handle it like they did with Disu a year ago--roll him out late in non-conference, just before league play kicks off. So maybe another month. But that's pure conjecture on my part.

Also receiving votes in the coaches poll. I’m not sure what he is looking at.

Look buddy, the last thing we need on this web site is someone who reads and digests another poster’s excellent argument, acquiesces, and responds reasonably. If you’re going to fit in around here, you need never, never budge from your opinion. Go down swinging no matter what evidence is presented. The motto of this website is ”Surly-where we die on every hill, regardless of facts.”

If we can beat Syracuse and probably Tech we should start getting votes. Tech is underrated at this point. KenPom has them at #9.

Gerry said Texas is “very hopeful” Mark will play against Syracuse on Thursday and will be a game-time decision.

that’s great news. we should be whole by conference play. 🤘🏼

Give him 8-10 minutes in each half to get him some work, but we really need him fully healthy for Tech.

I asked Gerry when Mark would play last night on an OTF livestream. He indeed said that he thought he could possibly play against Syracuse, but the coaching staff and trainers wanted him to be completely healthy before they let him play. So, he couldn't say for sure.

Checking in on some players who transferred.  Looks like Hunter and Mitchell are doing pretty well.

  • Tyrese Hunter, Memphis - 14.7 PTS, 4.0 AST, 4.7 TRB, 2.0 STL, 3.0 TOV, 0.563 eFG%.  Record 3-0
  • Dylan Mitchell, Cincinnati - 12.0 PTS, 1.3 AST, 8.7 TRB, 1.0 STL, 1.0 TOV, 0.692 eFG%.  Record 3-0
  • Chris Johnson, S.F. Austin - 10.7 PTS, 1.7 AST, 4.0 TRB, 1.0 STL, 1.7 TOV, 0.500 eFG%.  Record 2-2
  • Gavin Perryman, Vermont - 2.0 PTS, 0.0 AST, 1.0 TRB, 1.0 STL, 0.0 TOV, 0.333 eFG%. Record 1-3

I missed the Perryman transfer, any interesting backstory?

As for Anamekwe... (Lubbock Christian)

Morris isn't playing in the jail league by now?!?!?!?

Solid interview but Goodman is kind of an asshole.

"I'm sure it was a tough day for your dad when you committed to Texas" and he said it pretty seriously.

last night we did nothing but settle for bad shots, something we’ve done routinely under RT, something that we’re obviously going to do going forward under RT. no discipline or consequences. this team will live and die by the jump shot this year and in the tourney. we can’t beat good teams running half court sets, we’re not going to be great on the glass, we won’t defend the perimeter well; it’s all going to come down to individual offensive performances. it would also be great if someone like kent stepped up and helped chendall with the dirty work, because so far he’s our only guy who’s doing any.

Edited by Derka

We looked good early in the Syracuse game running a fast break-ish offense... and didn't settle for 3's.  We also seemed to do decent against the zone with Weaver bouncing around in the no man's land to receive passes.  Once things slowed down things got clunky and downright shitty at times, especially with Johnson frustrated and wanting to shoot his way out of the slump and Shed getting pushed out of position (even by smaller guys).  The absence of a big man to clean up the missed shots on defense and make opposing posts pass the ball, rather than requiring a double-team from a guard to help, is going to be a problem.  The only guy who seems to be able to play a center role is Onyema, and he's like an 9th or 10th  man type at best for most teams... though he does look improved physically from last year.   I sense it will be frustrating when we go against skilled SEC teams with guys on the frontline that are 6'9" and more.  We are going to have to run.  If Shed has one viable trait, it looks like he is pretty quick up and down the court... he also seems inclined to dunk rather than shoot flatfooted or fadeaway shit close to the basket, which is favorable for drawing fouls and shot percentage.  His shot blocking timing also seems decent... but his battery, man-on-man defense, rebounding acumen, and strength are not SEC starter worthy at the moment.

Rodney has a lot of work ahead.  And, I am not sure any amount of work can transform Shed or Onyema into guys that can stay on the court for more than 5 minutes at a time or deter teams from looking into the paint for points.

barnes and beard: hard asses who demanded a certain level of basketball IQ and accountability.

shaka and RT: two coaches who “everybody loves” who just sit there and watch as their players take 7 horrible shots in a row, and who make no adjustments to address their team’s weaknesses.

the worst part is that shaka is undoubtedly a better coach than RT. people have tried to justify RT based on “his” tourney results, but the truth is that at no point in his career has even been shaka’s equal. this is going to be a frustrating team to watch as long as RT is here.

Edited by Derka

However the RT experiment goes, I'll take him in a heartbeat over Shaka.

Good for Coach Smart that he and Marquette have been ranked for the past three seasons and thrown up a lot of big wins. He did not/could not do that here. He had several years and every opportunity.

In his one full season on the Forty, RT eclipsed anything Shaka was able to do, and he did it with a team that he mostly cobbled together with spare parts plucked from the portal.
