Astros scouting directdor Cam Pendino said Janek was the top player on their board for nine or 10 picks before they snatched him at 28. He's an athletic catcher who could move through the system quickly. He will remain at catcher, Astros say.

Walker Janek slashed .364/.476/.709 with 17 HR, 58 RBI, 13 SB as a junior for Sam Houston State in 2024. #Astros

The 3rd rounder we got from UC San Diego sounds good if he can stay healthy.

Looks like we went after big college pitchers rounds 3-5, have to like their projections. The Rice and Liberty pitchers look to be overdrafts.

Get him the mlb today !!! Ha

In the sixth round (193 overall), the Astros take SS Caden Powell from Seminole State College. He hit .502 with 109 hits and 104 RBIs in 217 ABs with 32 homers, 17 doubles, and 7 triples. He was named NJCAA DI Baseball Player of the Year.

Have to think those 3 college pitchers have underslot agreements already and the Astros will be taking some swings later in the draft with some HS talent that slips due to signability.

Drafted a Rice pitcher in rd 4

They do know Rice sucks now right?

Parker Smith went to one of the Astros-Tigers games last month at Minute Maid Park and wanted to buy a new hat or jersey. He stopped himself because "I may not be able to wear it again.""Now, I'll be able to wear all my stuff and be fine," Smith said https://t.co/jpgvgTMDm0

Day 2 of the draft is over for the Astros. They took six college right-handers, a college outfielder and a junior college shortstop.

They have very little pool money to work with. $5.9M. Dead last in the league. For comparison, the Guardians have the most at $18.3M

Smart, we draft a guy that already got his Tommy John out of the way 😂😂😂

Ryan Forcucci had Tommy John surgery in June, Astros scouting director Cam Pendino said. Before his injury, Forcucci was in the conversation for the Astros' first-round pick, Pendino said. https://t.co/YJZSQJD1lL

The Astros have the smallest pool for the MLB with $5,914,700.

If they are able to sign some players below slot, they could lure a high ceiling HS prospect tomorrow.

This is similar to what they did with Ryan Clifford, who signed for $1.2M in the 11th round in 2023.

Ochoa also got over slot with $300K. So likely a prospect similar to him as opposed to Clifford. Just never know because most kids that slip to 11th round can make more in NIL if they are going to a P4 school.

But I bet the kid from Rice is signing for less than his slot value of $541.10K.

Yeah… we won the World Series that year, but we gave that dude up for a rental of Francisco Liriano.

we win it without him, imo

We gave up Hernandez to get out of the Aoki contract. Crane is always playing around the edges with the LT, especially since we wasted $16.5M on Beltran's cheating ass.

In the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft, the Astros took 6 college right handed pitchers. They have taken 3 position players this draft, one in Caden Powell who is committed to OK St. He is an interesting prospect will need to be lured away with a higher signing.

Good summary of the picks  ….

Janek will ever only play in the Majors with a challenge system in place. The need to be an elite framer will be gone in a year.

Astros scouting director Cam Pendino said they anticipate signing OF Ethan Wagner (17th round from P27 Academy in Lexington, S.C.) but isn't as confident in signing OF Ky McGary (20th round from Sandra Day O’Connor High School in Phoenix). He's an Arizona State commit.

Jealous

Family vacation next week. Been trying to figure out a way to get out and check that dump off my list but don’t know if it’ll happen

Yankees at A’s on their final homestand is about the only game I think I can make work and not sure I really want to see a Yankees home game in Oakland
