I never knew I was claustrophobic until my most recent MRI for a pulled biceps tendon.  Originally, they put me in face-down.  Fuck that noise.  I hit the chicken switch in a minute with the thumb of an angry god.  Went in on my back/side with my arm and shoulder at an awkward angle.  I suffered through it, but I won't do another unsedated and will push for a partially-open MRI situation.

My ultimate reaction was, "When I die, cremate me.  I can't deal with a box."

I wish I could help. I did fall asleep during a CT in the 1990s. My sinus surgeon said it was the best image he had ever seen due to the limited movement during the scan.

I’m not sure if there is a limited image with a standup MRI, but it seems if you are paying for it then your physician should let you pick the MRI you want as long as it’s within your coverage and will do the job, diagnostically. Your doctor of course, wants to have you use the MRI that’s financially associated with his or her institution, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only choice available.    I imagine it would be on you to look up which imaging services are covered by your insurance, and have your physician order it be done at the place of your choice.

But keep in mind the purpose of an MRI is to give your physician the best idea of what is going on. When MDA was still looking for metastasized cancer in me, my physician specifically asked that I be scanned with the brand new Siemens MRI, which he said gave a better image then the slightly older MRIs that was the backbone of scanning at MDA.    In my case, the scan was to find small cancers that chemo hadn’t killed, and so I had no problem with a longer wait until that particular machine was available.

That is my long-winded way of saying that you need to pick the MRI alternative that gives you the best image. Period.   So gummy up if you have to.

what the fuck is wrong with you people?

I've had 6 MRI's and never once did I think I needed sedation. One time I did yawn when I was getting my shoulder done and they had to start over.

Of course I did spend about 5 years of my life in a submarine so maybe I'm just different.

I think I had 3 MRI's while I was hospitalized & they were due my (2) strikes

I was easily able to stay motionless & the "mountain range" image reminded me of a scene from Lord of the Rings (where they get to ride on the birds) or the Paramount logo.

Just listening to this as a preview brought back memories.  It's my opinion "they" have the technology to silence the blaring noises but chose not to.
