I generally opt for seafood inspired dishes when I eat at La Playa, but I've had their cheese enchiladas, and like every other dish I have had there, there is nothing inedible about them, granted I have not been since pre-COVID. I have not had their crispy tacos, but they are on the menu, and suspect they are edible as well.

I’ll stick with my opinion which is what it is. Compared to what I am used to in San Antonio and Austin that kind of stuff at La Playa is terrible.

And Austin Tex Mex is dog shit. Edited June 2Jun 2 by Hate

La Playa’s Tex Mex fits right in. I do get what you are saying. La Playa to me is sort of the equivalent of Matt’s El Rancho. I really like Matt’s, but I don’t ever order their Tex Mex. And I’d rather have cheese enchilada from Taco Cabana than what they serve at La Playa.

You have a point about my opinion being 5 years old, but like you, I'll stick with it and keep enjoying great food when I'm in town. If it is so terrible, then why the fuck are you eating it twice a month?

June 18Jun 18 Great weather in Port A so far this week for our annual extended family trip. Housed a lotta grub at Spaghetti Works tonight.

June 23Jun 23 spent a few days on the beach at mustang island. was not crowded at all. beaches were clean the first couple days but quite a bit of seaweed and tar washed up on saturday. really hate getting the tar off dog paws. ate at black diamond oyster bar a couple of times and it was excellent. stopped at beach ball brewing and it was truly terrible.
July 7Jul 7 Yeah Port A tar has ruined some swim wear in my household... Never been able to get it all out.
July 14Jul 14 Just did almost a week camping at PINS, the weather was amazing, water felt great and was really clear, and it was about the cleanest I've ever seen that beach. No seaweed at all and not much tar, at least there wasn't along our nearly 1/4 mile stretch of beach that we had all to ourselves. Oh and zero bugs. Coming back to Austin's mosquitoes last night was an unwelcome adjustment.
July 26Jul 26 @Ag with kids, is there anywhere good to buy fresh fish fillets on Padre Island that I can cook at our condo?

One in Port A and then one on Flour Bluff on the north side of SPID between Waldron and Flour Bluff Dr. Big yellow building. You can't miss it. They actually serve fried fish there now. It used to just be a bunch of coolers with fresh fish, but they've expanded.
July 27Jul 27 Thanks guys. I found Paul’s on the googles but good to get confirmation this is the spot.

August 27Aug 27 Venetian Hot Plate owners will be on vacation while we are in Port A. Any other restaurant worth making a reservation for, or should we just plan on heading to Corpus for anything other than fried fish?

Roosevelt’s, Phoenix, Lisabella’s, Black Marlin are are well above fried fish quality but not as good as Venetian. La Playa of course but they don’t do reservations. The new restaurant at Cinnamon Shore (Stout’s) is getting great reviews. I’ve only been once but it was very good. Definitely need a reservation.

Between phoenix, lisabella's, Stout's, and KC's Oyster shack which would you recommend?

September 29Sep 29 Well about to drag my trailer down for a few weeks of fun in the sun. We need it. Haven't left the rv down there since October 2023, and used it zero. Buried both our mothers in that span and nursed my Dad back to life in that time frame. Wife's mom passed last week and we will bounce back for the funeral. But damn. It's gong to be good just to chill out on the beach, and wet a line. So I am gonna head down Wednesday and get the trailer set up for the month. We had a blast in '21, '22 and '23 just coming down for the month of October depending on the tides, and wind. Pig party on OU weekend at Shorty's, Smoked tuna dip a Virginia's, and a steady diet of La Playa is heading my way! The wife and I need to get back to some us time. And nothing like the weekdays in Port A in October to take the edge off...
October 4Oct 4 So caught my limit of reds yesterday afternoon so a happy man! Fish pass Jetty was golden for abo autn hour and a half. Was trying to figure out where to watch the game in Port A today. We always seem to end up at Stingrays and the food just so average it bums me out. Anyplace else worth a damn to watch the game today? Thought about driving down towards North Padre Island, as there is a place Hard Knocks that's a sports bar there, but only because I wanted to go to Roy's and get some fishing stuff. Any suggestions? PS - have a case of Karbach Hopadillo I want to give to somebody in Port A either this weekend or next. preferably a Longhorn! We will be as some bar today watching, and we will be at Pig Party next weekend if any of you guys like that beer.

Brewster Street Ice House just opened on North Padre but I haven’t been yet.

Good tip on Brewster Street, looks like it's in the old Baot House, which was never a fav of mine. But Brewster Street has a good corpus rep and maybe that might do well there. I keep wondering if the fishing vibe of Port A will rub off if they develop up Lake Padre? Actually very happily went with my dark horse game watching choice, Red's Porch. Actually had a warmed smoked fish dip with some parm slices on top that I was skeptical about, but was damn good. I was skeptical of the warm fish dip, but with some fresh bread, it pretty good. Mainly a non=Stingray's vibe, with the breeze blowing, it made our sucking, not as bad. Honestly I have a feeling I will be sitting there for OU. Pain feels better in the breeze with Palms swaying. Had La Playa cook the catch, and that was a perfect close on Saturday evening. Think I might next time I might opt for the table side guac versus the crab/avocado addition to the fish. Only because you get whatever their fish sauce fo the day is with your fish. We had their Bayou sauce, and with the crawfish in that, we didn't really need the additional richness of the crab. Delicious though it was! Saw that Nick Parr and the Selfless Lovers were playing the Pig party, good band, I think the folks will like. Hoping for low wind, good tides, and attitudinal reset in over the next two weeks or so.

October 27Oct 27 Well had my 20 days in Port A and back in Austin. With two redfish limits pulled out of the Fish pass Jetty, and getting Redfish catch cooked at La Playa, and the Trout and Flounder cooked at Kody's. Outside of watching the disaster of the Florida game, the trip was as usual, relaxing and awesome. But here are a couple pics from the trip Sunrise from beach in front of IB MaGee looking at jetty 20 inch trout converted to Garlic Fish at Kody's Edwin the owner of Kody's asked my how big my flounder was. I said pretty big (21 inches) and he said he would make us something special if we brought it back in the evening. Pic is crap as my camera was still damp and fogged. But he basically wrapped a crab cake, with flounder filets, tossed it int eh broiler and then hit it with a white wine sauce. Charged us 14 each for the fish cook, and for a single crab cake. Having my fish cooked by Kody's and La Playa is one of my real pleasures in Port A! Anyhow see ya soon Port A! Tight lines, good meals, and a good buzz!
