Some of y'all still like to think we are in a roster cycle where Donovan Duvernay is our backup safety and Tim Cole is our backup LB.

Moore’s camp has told Bobby Burton that Trey Moore is returning to Texas. Nothing set in stone, but that would be a big deal, IMO.

It's Robert Killebrew for me. He immediately comes to mind as someone who frequently infuriated me with his asinine penalties and terrible mechanics.

The thing about recruiting is that there's a lot more history supporting how programs perceive value. A 5 star can command $1M because of what they can do if they're playing the right position. Dakorian Moore picked up $1.3M from Oregon. That's the most I've heard of outside of QB, but that's also Oregon. Generally, though, by position a 5 star will go from $100k to $1M. Falloff is gradual but accelerates downward to $0 for many recruits. There are so many risks in terms of the HS recruit profile. Can they handle pussy in college? Learning and not playing much early? Getting hit or hitting others of the same talent level and size? Can they sort a playbook? Handle 100,000 people and that noise in a stadium? Classwork? Etc.

So many of those perceived risks are canceled by college production. Yet, there's almost no history of paying for CFB production. What is a multiyear starting CB for a repeating CFP team worth to someone? Apparently $2M, allegedly. How about a proven Edge like the guy at SCar? $1.5M per year. Betting Simmons is now going to be in that range, probably a little higher.

The list goes on, but that shit is going to continue to change and develop in each cycle. There's no proven equilibrium yet. If someone's team is one All American WR from a title, how much is that guy worth? Probably a lot more than $1.3M.

Killebrew was also the first name that came to mind for me. But I'm not sure I will ever forgive Wrong Way Gideon for years of pain.

Didn’t Burton say this was the most prepared for the portal the program has ever been? We’re still going to win the sec next year, but what an insane comment

Exactly what makes you think we're not prepared, or that the portal season isn't going well?

Your concept of a full rebuild is like my son's concept of a nutritious dinner; neither are tethered in fucking reality.

We're going to lose less players to the NFL draft this year and we lost last year. Some of the guys you've referenced have been flawed players for us, particulaly 2 I can think of on the OL. Oh, and Williams is leaving but Goosby looked great when he played, so obviously we're totally fucked.

I bet last year you were saying "Who's going to replace J'Tavion Sanders? Gunner Helm?!?! We're doooooomed." We have TE's on campus and we've been developing them.

Makuba is a loss, Barron is a big loss, Muhammed...eh. Gimme a healthy Derek Williams, and awesome Jelani McDonald, a returning Michael Taffe, and a good looking Kobe Black and someone from the portal.

I wont even waste my time adressing WR, the easiest position to land talent in the portal and a position where we're already stacked.

DT, everyone said we were fucked this year too. BUT THIS TIME IT'S TRUE. OkJan.gif.

One of us. Only one of us thinks like this.

No fucking way in any earth is it “ok to step back”.  We are fucking back to back semi finals 1 play from natty  missing the playoffs this year would be fucking murder. Especially in NIL. Era. We’ve had top classes coming in and being developed the last 2 years. Next 5 star up

This is a pretty fucking stupid take. Buck Burnette tweeted out racist shit. Robert Killebrew was good for 1-2 egregious personal fouls a game. But a guy who in his first year starting had some issues with penalities, and still is in line to be a super high draft pick, and has done or said nothing but represent the Horns respectful, he's the guy you hate? Becuase he had a bad game, playing while inujured, and honestly maybe the coach shouldn't have run him out in the first palce? Your take can get all the way fucked.

I can see how someone can be a little bitch and throw out a bad take becuase they're a child, sure.

@brojangles2 I love a good neg, but myself and several posters are still waiting for you to elaborate on why Cam Williams is your most hated of all time. By all means, please, use this opportunity to enlighten us all.

IT with a few notes

Things are happening fast for Texas, and Texas fans, right now. There’s certainly a lot to process. While fans might feel like the world is caving it, that’s an illusion stemming from it being the five-day post-semifinal declaration window for both the portal and the NFL Draft. A lot is happening all at once rather than a slow drip many other schools experience.

Busy morning

Earlier this morning Inside Texas broke the news a couple of important players for 2025 are expected to hit the transfer portal. We’ll let each situation play out organically, though plenty of sleuths have figured out one. Honestly, that one isn’t hard to figure out. IT had hinted about him in October. The other player would have started and is talented. He plays a position that was already a need.

On the NFL front, Isaiah Bond declared for the NFL as expected. Cameron Williams also declared. The staff felt that was likely for months but still tried to persuade him to return to get much better prepared for the NFL. Anyone who watched Texas this year understands he’s far from a finished product.

NFL Draft, portal, high school recruiting

It’s impossible to disconnect what happens with NFL departures, the portal, and high school recruiting. It’s all intertwined because roster management is largely predicated by how money is allocated. Also, money is finite. This is news to AM sports radio callers who think their team’s outfield would consist of Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Ronald Acuna if their owner just wanted to win!

Texas is forced to live in the real word rather than AM caller world or government spending. That means they need to be measured and patient in their approach. Texas has one of the 2-3 best rosters in football and just landed the No. 1 recruiting class. I’d say Sark and Co. know what they’re doing.

Victim of own success

Recruiting at such a high level and developing and deploying obvious NFL talents on the field early in their career has schools circling in hopes those players will enter the portal. This forces Texas to fortify its defense and keep the most important players in the fold first. They can’t keep everyone, especially those looking to exert max leverage in search of the biggest payday.

Retaining top players creates downward pressure everywhere else. Colin Simmons is one such top player. Is Trey Moore really a major need at this point? It’d be great for him to return, the coaches certainly want him back, but more pressing issues are quickly arising. Edge is a position of depth and talent and certainly keeping Colin Simmons out of the portal wasn’t cheap. (This situation is why I began to fade the Javian Hilson recruitment this past cycle)

At this point, Trey Moore is more likely to leave for the NFL than he was a day ago.

Texas cannot afford to lose Simmons, Anthony Hill, or Ryan Wingo and Texas won’t lose them. Or Arch Manning if you’re an AM sports radio caller who needs it stated explicitly.

The spring portal will be massive

Texas has a great roster but retention has not gone nearly as well as it has in years past. I don’t even have Michael Taaffe as a lock to return. Some positions will have gone from looking for luxury takes to a major need.

There will need to be a massive fundraising effort for the spring portal window and Texas will need to aggressively wave cash in the air in the general direction of the best agents.

*****

We’ll have much more to cover in the coming days on roster management.

This is where I’m at. 9 wins should be our floor. I expect 10-2 at worst next year even with OSU being game 1. We’ve had excellent recruiting classes the past few years now, maybe with the exception of some absolute elite talent on OL since the Banks class. We should be great. Just how great we are depends on one or two impactful portal pickups, how well the OL can mesh together, whether Arch plays at a Heisman level, and whether our interior DL are strong & deep enough to allow our LBs and Ss to clean up the run game. The fact that our corners may take a step back is lessened by the effect of having what may be the best pass rush at Texas in my lifetime.

CTJ has basically told us MM is gone, but this all but confirms it if this is how our 9.95ers are talking. Black is going to be one of the starters; so if Wilson and Phillips are battling for the other spot, MM is gone.

I personally don't care if MM leaves. I'd bet Santana Wilson is much better just due to lineage, but I do understand why people feel the way they do about him leaving. When you're successful, people will want your staff/players. Kobe Black opposite will be good. He's looked really good in his limited time.

Who is the would have started and position of need guy leaving

I think some people are still stuck in a version of college football that doesn't exist anymore. Portal, NIL, and 12 team playoff changed everything. There is no rebuilding when a program is clicking. Just reloading.

Last year our winter portal haul included Mukuba, Golden, Bond, and Trey Moore. Elite adds at every position of need. This year we whiffed or balked at price tags for major WR, TE, and CB. Even ignoring MM, anyone who posted now that the portal preparedness was better than ever would get laughed off the board.

Being prepared for the portal includes retention just as much as, if not more than, it does acquisition.

More concise response that I was writing but deleted. Everyone regularly on this board should know this and understand it is part of how those involved with NIL and roster management (Sarkisian, Harris, scouts, major donors, etc.) have to think about things.

If Williams is gone, Texas certainly needs Taaffe back and probably needs another competent safety from the portal.

He's also a transfer risk. He thought he would be playing early and often.

Anyone worried about safety is likely justified in being so.

Warren Roberson's at S, too, right? Saw him (get a couple penalties) on ST this year.

Roberson’s been training solely at CB.

Filsaime’s game is all potential at this point. He’s not even trusted to handle special teams right now.

There was a two-game stretch where he got three penalties (I believe all holding) just on ST haha. He had more than that, but I remember those for sure.

I guess we'll see, but it feels like Sark's plan was to focus on the Spring Portal. There was a lot of crazy money and desperation in the first portal opening. We targeted and signed a few guys, but no need to get desperate and money whip other players that visited.

We have recruited well. I'm sure he wants to see the progress of our young guys after a couple more months of conditioning/workouts before deciding on some other portal needs and acquisitions.

I mean, there's thinking you're prepared based on what you saw last year, and then there's tOSU, Michigan, and Oregon blowing your numbers out of the water.

Frankly, this is a short-sighted and stupid comment that you should feel bad about.  Assuming it's those schools, in that order, in terms of portal budget and Texas is No. 4 out of 133 D1 football teams -  Id say that's pretty fucking prepared.

Makes sense. LSU fans have been talking about getting Williams for months now. And Muhammad has not one, but two cousins who transferred to Oregon.

I don't know if that was his plan but making a playoff run complicated things. Until now he didn't know who would be staying/leaving and how much they'd cost. Now the winter portal is closed and the good players are taken so there isn't really a choice.

If not for playoff timing, I think it would be dumb to focus on spring portal. You want guys here for spring practice.

Hate to lose guys, but if you told me the only "big" transfers are Muhammad and Derek Williams, I take that in a heartbeat.
