https://athlonsports.com/college/washington-state-cougars/3000-yard-qb-has-1-5-million-offer-to-transfer-to-sec-program

Spoiler

With the free-for-all that is the NCAA Transfer Portal, player movement is at an all-time high.

No team is safe from losing a star, especially if that program isn't in one of the premier conferences in college football. Group of Five and FCS schools have to deal with the unfortunate reality that when a player blows up, the sharks will begin to circle with major NIL offers.

This is something that former Power 5 program Washington State is hoping to avoid when it comes to star quarterback John Mateer.

Last season, he was simply known as Cam Ward's backup, but this season, he has programs across the country yearning for his name to pop up in the portal.

In fact, programs have already been offering him money to do so, with one school reportedly offering $1.5 million to lure him away from Washington State. A number revealed by insider John Canzano, who recently dove into the behind-the-scenes efforts by Washington State to keep him in Pullman, which featured a NIL package and messages from program legends Jack Thompson and Ryan Leaf.

"Two donors who developed friendships with Mateer in the last couple of years told me they opted not to attend the meeting out of respect," Canzano wrote. "They didn’t want to be selfish and put undue pressure on Mateer, who is being wooed with the weight of a $1.5 million NIL package from an SEC school, among others."

It isn't shocking that the Cougars are going to such dramatic lengths to keep the star quarterback. He led the program to its first eight-win season since 2018, and established himself as one of the best dual threats in the country. On the year, he threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns, while adding 826 yards rushing and 15 scores with his legs.

While Canzano didn't reveal which team it was, Many have linked Mateer to Oklahoma since Washington State's offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, accepted the same role in Norman on Dec. 2. However, as confirmed by Canzano, Mateer is practicing with the Cougars (8-4) ahead of their DirecTV Holiday Bowl meeting with the No. 21 Syracuse Orange (9-3) on Friday, Dec. 27.

As for his future in Pullman and whether or not he will transfer, Canzano revealed that a decision is expected at "anytime."

If Mateer stays, he will go down as a program legend at a school that was glossed over in conference realignment but is fighting to remain relevant. If he leaves, he could very well end up as the top quarterback in the portal, and could end up fielding dozens of offers worth over one million.

"Appeared in every game"

Much better sounding than "4 receptions for 82 yards" and "hasn't had a catch since October 26" and "5 career receptions"

Is there any chance we could lose Gibson to the portal? I heard at two different parts of the season that he was struggling big time with pass protection and it was limiting his use.

Haven't heard anything, but, fucking A, let's try to will it into existence!

Just a freshman. give him a break.

Poor choice of words, considering the state of the RB room.

In all seriousness, the RB room has been the biggest twist of fate of the year. Between the losses due to injuries, Blue (who we thought would be a huge factor), going full Blue, Gibson hardly seeing the field because he shouldn’t, and Wisner carrying the load…

Nobody would have written a script remotely close to this last spring, and it’s a big reason for many of the offensive struggles.

Yes. I want it, and I want it now, God damnit! But also, I really want Haynes. Dude would absolutely kill it here with Baxter (assuming he's good to go, and if not, we still have a contingency plan).

12 hours ago, Schulz2.0 said:

Wisner is better as a complimentary back. Sark has mainly ran inside zone to pair with the deep passing game. We struggled to run inside zone this season because neither Wisner or Blue are suited to run it. Blue and Gibson keep fumbling. Baxter and Clark are coming off major injuries.

Exactly. But people will still be like "They're starter level players!!!" Yeah, if you want to throw in the flat or even screens. They're too small to run up the middle unless it's against bad teams up front. Other than that, we've seen them get shut the fuck down when they have a spy on them.

7 hours ago, South Austin said:

Yeah, that was a weird take.  He's a true freshman who's never taken a snap, and coming off an Achilles injury.  Not sure why Funk Dr. gave him the label as our "primary back."

And we'll see how Clark recovers.  Jonathan Gray was never the same after his Achilles injury, though many think he didn't have a lot of mileage left after getting overworked in high school.

I've been packing my ex-wife's shit so I may have confused he and Baxter. I dunno. I'm fucking ready to be done with this shit so I can relax.

It's not about absurd demands, the made up part is the dumb fucks just picked shit becuase they believe NIL contracts would look like a coaching contract. Newsflash, they do not. Explain how a marketing agreement or product sponsorship covers "medical injury time off" or "hotel arragements." Sure, I could make an arugment that a hotel chain in all of the cities Tech travels too might want a sponsorship deal with an opposing player...but yeah, it's stupid. As is the concept of "Micah Hudson's injury time off, brought to you by McDonald's." It's dumb. At best, the agent would run some #s and the money for that kind of thing would be included in a lump sum of money from a collective. But the contract wouldn't look like that, at all.

Which is why it's entirely made up bullshit by some moron on the Internet who's Funk Dr. Spock level stupid

This is ridiculous. No one is stupider than me.

Getting some portal drama from the Arizona State Texas Rejects. Not important but funny to share since he’s suggesting he got forced out.

Sounds like we did him a solid by being honest and allowing him to go have a good experience somewhere else.  He sounds like kind of a hay seed.

But, but but Quinn is the reason for all our offensive woes and is surrounded by NFL talent, there can't be other contributing factors like the offensive line getting their shit pushed in against Georgia.

They're certainly a more complete team than Boise. If you stop Jeanty, you beat Boise. They have nothing after him. If you stop Skattebo, sparky can still play defense and Sam Leavitt is a really good first year starter. I think Texas would win that game, but they're one of those endlessly scrappy B12 teams that stick around long enough for Sark to forget how to call the offense.

They lost their top WR, which is going to make making them one dimensional easier.

If Chandler is finally coming to the realization that he's going to end up "Going pro in something other than football.", then UVA is a much better launching pad for that than UNT.

If he's even close to graduating, he should still with UVA until he walks.

I've been to both campuses and you wouldn't even know that they were located in the same country.

I believe Connor Brewer did something similar at UVA before law school.

ASU doesn’t worry me like Clemson and I think we beat Clemson. Is asu even good like that?

Neither should worry you. They're both good, not great teams. Our talent level is beyond anything they have. We will beat them both by double digits. I'm hoping Tennessee knocks both fOSU and Oregon off and then runs out of steam against us, or our defense just goes no lube.

Tons of Bama players portaling. I guess Deboer sucks as a person.

Bags don’t rule the world and there’s no Saban discount. They don’t have the infrastructure to support the highest team talent in the country anymore. Makes sense that they won’t be able to keep highly talented backups on the payroll for years anymore.

Y'all might as well stop trying.  They're all going to Sac St with their $50 mil NIL budget.

When you say “lose”, do you really mean “process”?  Unfortunately he is unplayable. That’s kind of a problem.

Billy Edwards kinda sucks and I think Fickell is fired next year so I'm really just posting this for the graphic which is hilarious and sadly does not seem to be made by Hayes
