Absolutely. This is the #1 priority. I do wonder if Tha at Clemson guy is hitting the portal and we throw all the cash at him.

Moore’s camp has told Bobby Burton that Trey Moore is returning to Texas. Nothing set in stone, but that would be a big deal, IMO.

If mental retardation is a planet, that's where I'm at. I bitched about needing a RB in case Baxter isn't healthy, but we really need another 1-2 DT'S, and I should have clutched my pearls about that. I'm hoping that Clemson dude hits the portal.

It sucks seeing posters forget about the big transfers we just signed.

We'll have a lot more than two open roster spots. No reason to leave them open. Three more DTs, a RB, a DB, a TE, and a WR (assuming Golden goes pro) would be ideal. I would take an OL as well, but it doesn't seem like the staff wants to.

safety will be fine. Corner is more of a question mark. Kobe Black, Wardell Mack, Santana Wilson, Jay'Vion Cole - most of those guys I haven't heard much about.

McDonald, Derek Williams off an injury, and then JJR and Filsaime with very little experience....and that's it?

Black has played quite a bit. Mack had an INT this year. Cole is in the Portal.

I thought Cole was - I did a quick google search and I didn't see it. Thanks for the clarification.

@texifornia Did they ever tell us the severity of Derek Williams' knee injury and what they repaired at time of surgery?

No idea, but he certainly has the injury bug

Blasphemy !!

Don’t ask obvious questions !!

Is the number still three more DT’s? It sounds like at RB it’s going to come down to the progress of Baxter and if Gibson can figure out how to run the ball without fumbling. That seems more like a spring transfer portal addition.

He's not. He's standing on a stack of turtles.

Ohio State is raking boys in like the Finns in a forest raking leaves. Is Day the kind of culture guy that can get them all on the same page? Looks like the Deion experiment in Colorado.

Gibson looked fine against Clemson.

How did he look against Kentucky?

Im glad we get Ohio state week 1. They’re gonna be breaking in plenty of new contributors

If Taaffe leaves we’ll probably get a portal guy there.

Per Pete Nakos, Maalik Murphy committed to Oregon State but still has not signed. Now Iowa is possibly getting a visit after the dead period.

During the open practice last week, I think Bobby mentioned that Williams was out there and moving around pretty well all things considered.

Golden might make more by coming back and building on what he’s doing than going into the draft. The replacement cost for him is significant. I’m hoping they retain him and that’s that at WR.

Williams has been working out with the team already, albeit non-contact. He was looking good ahead of the injury.

If you just go through the exercise of asking yourself if you believe that Texas is going to head into next season short: a seasoned WR, a solid three deep at DT, a solid three deep at RB. I don’t. History says they’ll be fine.

FWIW, it sounds like they feel good about where things go from here in this transfer cycle.

Need one regardless imo. Williams won’t be back until October to November. Just looking at Brooks timeline(12-13 months)

Quick portal update:

Texas has hosted five official visitors during the winter portal window.

Three of those players have committed to Texas - Purdue DL Cole Brevard, Arkansas LB Brad Spence and Utah P Jack Bouwmeester.

The other two - Georgia Tech WR Eric Singleton and Purdue TE Max Klare - chose Auburn and Ohio State, respectively, yesterday.

So where does that leave Texas?

Well, the portal window closes on Dec. 28 for teams and their players no longer participating in bowls or the playoffs. However, if a player is still participating, he receives a five-day grace period following his bowl or playoff game.

In other words, there are still about 30 teams out there, including Texas, who are still playing and whose players could enter the portal well after the Dec. 28 deadline.

Furthermore, we have now entered a portal dead period. A dead period is defined by the NCAA as no face-to-face contact between a recruit/transfer and a team. So Texas, nor any team, can not host official visits over the Christmas holidays.

The dead period is lifted for transfer portal prospects on Jan. 1.

The dead period, however, does not disallow all contact with transfers, just in-person visits. So Texas coaches and staff will be speaking and texting with portal transfers during this time.

Of course, the biggest position of need for the Longhorns remains at defensive tackle. Even with the addition of Brevard, Texas must add at least two, if not three, others to feel reasonably good about its depth at the position given defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s penchant for utilizing a heavy DL rotation.

In all, Texas still has some work to do in the portal, and there’s time left to do it.

However, squeezing in a playoff run alongside portal recruiting can be a daunting task.

There are a couple of DLs in the portal currently that Texas is at the very least looking at. They include Iowa State DL Toby Onyedim and Utah DL Nua Tanuvasa. Both are multi-year starters and either of them would provide immediate value and experience to the roster.

**

Texas will continue to be picky overall when it comes to portal additions.

For example, Texas only brought in one wide receiver during this initial portal window. And it was the top receiver available overall.

That follows with Sark’s typical stance. Use the portal to backfill gaping holes, like DT this year, and use it to amplify already strong positions, like safety or defensive end last cycle.

**

My favorite Christmas present ever was a Team Murray bike that I received when I was 10 years old.

What was yours?

Hook’Em and I hope everyone has a great day today!

Most people thought we needed two more before Mitchell left, so I assume the number is now three. Need to land a difference make, a big body (ala Norton), and maybe another depth piece.

I'm just not sold on our 3rd wide receiver next year and that is without any injuries and Golden returning. Does the staff feel like one of the freshmen wide receivers can be an immediate impact guy? I guess it is hard to know, though, whether you  have a Jeremiah Smith/Ryan Wingo or a Demond Demas/Evan Stewart.

TE for fans seems to be a question mark as well. It's hard to know whether the staff feels like it has a solid 12 personnel package and whether it feels like it can replace Helms production.

Any behind the scenes type info on the 2024 class on guys like Zina?

Golden OR transfer / Wingo / Moore or one of the two five stars or Butler/Dubose/Livingston breaking out seems like a very healthy room to me

I think you could have left out Butler/Dubose/Livingston - the only thing those guys can break out is a swell line dance.

Do you have any particular insight or are you assuming a flat trend line will hold for the rest of their time on campus?

We don't need them to break out. We just need one to be the sixth WR (I'm assuming Ffrench and Lockett show up ready to go, at least comparable to Wingo this year). Right now we're playing with about 4.5.

Really? There’s been numerous folks who have developed into solid contributors as upper classmen who haven’t shown much their first year or two on campus. Do you have any particular insight or are you assuming a a flat trend line will hold for the rest of their time on campus?

A lot of people wrote Dubose off because he had knee surgery in HS and didn't look the same after. Don't know where he's at now. The narrative on Livingston is he's a white guy so he must suck. Butler is a mystery.

We still want a PK? seems like we need to recruit one to the portal.

A lot of people are taking the jokes about Livingston seriously. He’s like found money if he becomes productive. That’s the same for Dubose and Butler. They’ve never prevented Texas from taking other guys. I like making PL jokes and will take ribbing if he works out. It would be kind of awesome for one of these three guys to become a real contributor.

Conversely, Texas needs Ffrench, Lockett and Wingo to work out. Texas went after those guys at the expense of other options and they all cost a lot of money.

I like this TE. I don’t know how he grades on the blocking side, but he has good hands. He’s not the fastest guy, but neither is Gunnar Helm.

Option number 3 - I'm just being a smartass since I wasn't sold on them when they were recruited.

Sorry I ranted. Isn't this what this is for? We need a RB in case Blue leaves. I used Haynes because he has experience. If Blue leaves and Baxter is still not the same, we're relying on Wisner, Gibson (fumble issues, and he's rarely used), Clark (achilles, and may not be the same), and 2 freshmen. That's not great. I don't care if it's Haynes or not, but we still need a RB with experience, imo.

Someone talk be off the ledge, please.

Earl & Ricky were once freshmen, played and contributed, and somehow made it through college okay.

I think our WR corp will look better with Arch. A little more zip on the ball gets it to the guys quicker and gives them more time in space.

The contested balls they see are mostly under thrown passes, which favor the defense.

QE has a big arm, but he rarely uses it. His TD pass to Golden against Michigan, throwing a dart to the front corner of the endzones was a big time NFL pass and should be the staple, not the anomaly.  Whether QE won't, or can't, make those throws doesn't matter, Arch can and will.

I wish the best for him as well until he lines up against us. That being said I don't think a coach with an uncertain future will be the most doting sponsor or resource to lean on while trying to kick whatever the fuck he's putting in his body now. Hope he can straighten out.
