Protests are fine.

Intimidation of groups of people is dead fucking wrong.  fuck you and anyone who allows situations like Cooper Union, the literal harassing intimidation of others.

And NO there is not evidence I have seen that harassing intimidation happened at UT yesterday.

This is correct. None of that shit happened on campus yesterday. Therefore, the overwhelming and thuggish response by DPS was completely fucking unnecessary. Everything else is peripheral, so stop bringing that shit up.

What the cops did yesterday turned this whole thing from a pro-Palestinian protest into something that strikes at the core of what it means to be an American: the violent suppression of Free Speech by the State.

Jews being chased through campuses is not a trivial issue.  You should be embarrassed taking the position, "stop bringing that shit up".   What the fuck is wrong with you?

I know this in poor taste, but that would be funny in a Kramer getting shitcanned kinda way.

"Coach Joseph.  With regard to yesterday's events...you're being let go."

-But I had nothing to do with it.  How can you fire me?  I was looking at passing game tape while the whole protest thing took place!

"I know you were.  And that's what makes this so difficult."

I didn't say it was trivial. I said it was peripheral to what happened yesterday. And, to my knowledge, the extreme harassment you keep talking about that has happened elsewhere hasn't happened on the UT campus. I can cite an instance of a pro-Palestinian protestor getting stabbed in West Campus a couple of months ago, though, if you're interested.

I used to chase a few Jewish kids around at my school growing up.  I am not proud of it.  I was a horrible soccer player/slow as shit in track.

I guess you are actually stupid enough to think yesterday at UT happened in a vacuum.

My god, how slow were you that you couldn't catch up to the non-existent Jewish members of the Track & Field team?  ;)  (I say this as a slow jew myself, but I'm still pretty quick in the pool.  Not Spitz fast, but not bad for my age group)

He was my friend, dickhead.  The point you easily missed was how things could be misconstrued because it fits an agenda.  Just as you tried to conflate something that happened somewhere else with something else.    UT's pro-Palestinian protest was a MODEL protest.   Unlike some of the others happening elsewhere or other incidents where people were harmed, threatened, and harassed, that is of course, until the republican's goon squad showed up.

Nowhere did I say the UT protest yesterday was antisemitism.   I've been abundantly clear.  Jokes about chasing Jews aren't fucking funny.

You're just saying it repeatedly and insistently in a thread about the protests yesterday, while the governor and senator that are creaming their khakis over beating up protesters are claiming that they sent in the goons because of antisemitism.

I'm not a fucking idiot, dude. It's pretty transparent the line you're towing.

He’s fucking admitted none of his bullshit has anything to do with the protest at UT, in a thread about the protest at UT

Of course Blacklab and the aggy will ignore the obvious threadshitting

No, this wasn't on a track team, just PE and recess (elementary school).   Reading Diary of A Wimpy Kid books to my kids, I realized I identified with the protagonist a bit too much at times.

is there another thread with just details and none of the commentary? how many were arrested?  and for what?  how many participants were there?

It's absolutely shameful and revealing to your character that you think being anti-fascism is an insult.

I’d probably ask for my username to be changed to that. Badge of pride being on the side of the anti-fascists

Also Captain Antifa and the Leftists = killer band name. Modern day RATM

It's revealing of your character that you think its ok to chase Jewish people around Columbia University chanting about their extermination and repeatedly attempt to burn down Federal Courthouses with hundreds of federal employees inside.

Anti-Fascist=Supporters of Fascist Joe Biden and against Authoritarian Donald Trump

Pro-Free Speech on College Campuses=Opposed to peaceful protests held by students who pay tuition to be on that campus

Anti-Communist=Russia isn't so bad, Putin is a misunderstood genius, as is President Xi and Kim Jung-Un (both socialists)

Anti-Authoritarian State=let the state beat people and arrest them for no reason except in certain exceptions where it's just tourists or FBI fake actors getting lost on the way to the gift shop.

You live long enough, you see everything turned on its head.  This is a horrible black eye on the University.

Incredulity, surely you are aware that you are engaging in classic thread shitting?

I'll gladly depart.

My initial response was to a minimization of, "threatening chants".

There's a clear precedent: DT is for news, CR is for discussion. This event isn't producing updates as fast paced as Gaza or Ukraine but it's bringing the hot takes out of CR at the same rate.

Yeah, lots of opinions on Jay on this thread.  I'll check my bias at this time.  But there is obviously going to have to be some fall guy for this.  UTPD Chief Stephens may be an obvious choice, but she simply did what they've been doing for a long while at campus protests.

I move that we make David Pierce the fall guy.

Man it's definitely bizarro land watching all the obedience worshipers run afoul of their Khazarian overlords.

Of course genocide is bad and everyone should stand up against it but the control structure who created the obedience worshiping cult are the purveyors of the genocide and they don't like dissent.

Hopefully this causes more people to join the resistance class but only time will tell.  I'm sure we will have some manufactured false flag event to scare everyone back into line.

TexasTribune has some new reporting on the fallout

Notable things from the journalism:

  • At least 57 people, including one journalist, were arrested yesterday
  • UT Faculty Counsel Executive Committee this morning said they are "gravely alarmed" by yesterday's reaction and accused Hartzell of inviting DPS onto campus
  • A number of professors have made classes optional today
  • Protests are planned to resume at the Tower today at 12:15

As we get more into discussion and unpacking whatever the fuck happened yesterday, I think it's useful to remember what past intellectuals have written about fascism. Umberto Eco grew up under Mussolini's fascist regime, and really nicely distilled the idea of "Ur-Fascism" and its common "features".

Quote
  1. The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
  2. The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”
  3. The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
  4. Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
  5. Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”
  6. Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.”
  7. The obsession with a plot. “Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged.”
  8. The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”
  9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
  10. Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”
  11. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”
  12. Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.”
  13. Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.”
  14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

It is deeply upsetting how many of these features can be seen in abbott's abuse and response since yesterday. And also upsetting to see features in other posters.
