Great spot.  I first started going there when it was Red Tomato + Bananas (?), then I made the shift to Clay Pit, which unfortunately has started to go downhill with major recipe changes.  New ownership?

There’s no better place to be in Austin than on Rainey Street at 1:30 a.m.

  • I miss it too…

  • I can't quit Austin and I can't quit Conan's.  It's amazing to me that the Anderson/Burnet location is almost identical to how it was when I was in high school decades ago.

Speaking of Austin and good times, what are some of your options for game-watching this weekend?

Far Out Lounge is only doing something indoors and not outside (based on what they've said)

Sholz's, of course.

We're probably looking at Pins Mechanical.

Of course you have obvious options like Dirty's, Crown & Anchor, Posse, etc.

My son is in town, and I suggested we get together with some buddies someplace to watch the game.  He said "how about someplace with a pool table, so we can shoot 9-ball while we watch?"  Turns out, there aren't a lot of great options that have beer, actual food, and pool tables.  Think we're going to the Bon Aire.  Which is kinda divey, and I kinda love it.  Sort of a well-kept secret of just real-deal bars with simple grub and such.

Seriously one of the best burgers in town, and cheap.  $3.99 ($4.99 with cheese).  Do the toasted ravioli, too.

I'm going to my BIL's house because he has a giant ass projector.

Don't forget peel-and-eat shrimp for .39 each.  A dozen shrimp with my beer for under $5?  Yep, that'll do.  And the burger is truly damned solid.

I can't eat seafood, but my wife had the fried shrimp and said they were legit.

South Austin Beer Garden is a nice set-up.  Tons of beers on taps, good TVs (with the sound on) and if it's like the last couple of seasons, they usually grill up burgers and/or dogs in the parking lot (free!).

Bon Aire has great crowds on game day as well.

The Tavern is my go-to spot. My wife and I were talking about it and I think we went there for the 2005 Ohio St game and for the Rose Bowl. I guess I should go there tomorrow to repeat the 2005 magic.

The Statesman has started a cool series on old Austin landmarks.  A retired city planner has written something like 600 short history articles on different Austin landmarks and they're putting out 2 or 3 at a time on the website.  Recent topics include the building Clay Pit is in, Peter Pan, Sandy's, and the old general store at NW corner of 6th and Congress.

Have they gotten to the W Hotel or The Domain yet?

It's like you don't even drive by 45th and Lamar.

11 AM kickoff - it'll be fine.

Also, @Brisketexan never paid attention if Sam's Town Point has a TV or is even open at that time.  Maybe Lil Darlin?

Nice stuff, but all way south.  I live in near NW Austin.  And the buddies meeting me live farther NW, so I generally look for stuff in the 183 corridor for such purposes.

Hope they fall before the soccer match.  Gonna be a pretty full day, watching UT in the morning, then utterly mediocre soccer in the evening.

You could’ve just said soccer.

Pins Mechanical going to be busy today.  Snagged a few spots at 9:30 AM.  My wife thought I was crazy for getting here this early but by 10:00 my reasoning was confirmed.  At least we got some duckpin bowling in before it filled up.

Remember the dude who used to sell incense on the drag in the early 90s?

"Incense... 20 sticks... one dollar!"

He's still selling incense in front of Perla's on South Congress.  Talked to him for a while today.

Now, if only I can find the friar who hung out in front of the Union.

I was back in Austin this weekend, caught up with some old friends, watched the Texas game with a great group of rowdy folks, visited Jester King and Meanwhile, had some tasty dim sum at 1618, smashed a plate of migas at Cisco's and just generally acted dumb.

In short a perfect weekend.  I'll watch my cholesterol tomorrow.

Went Saturday afternoon and sat on the back porch of Shoal Creek Saloon and enjoyed some $4 happy hour beers and a fried shrimp basket. Followed that up with a great show at the Cactus Cafe.
