In fairness, if Jussie Smollett had been standing outside the Capitol building on Jan. 6 wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt, he’d probably be dead.

"That lady" has a user name. It is @Bama Chick.

Since the thread is already somewhat derailed, and to bring it full circle back to what started it down this path, consider that the thankfully removed picture/meme was being used just one month after a Senate candidate spent ten times ($45,000) the amount of an original campaign ad (between $3000-3500) running an ad in which she visibly darkened the face of her opponent. That is fact, and was not only reported by left leaning agencies.

As @Bama Chick commented, using race and gender as a weapon against their own 'demographic'  but playing it off as a joke is ill-advised.

But since Jesse Smollett was brought up specifically; let's go there. I don't recall all of the conversations on Surly surrounding the event, but Smollett was essentially charged with 16 counts (2019) which were dropped, and then in 2020 was recharged with 6 counts of disorderly conduct and as of now is awaiting trial. The pandemic has slowed adjudication so it may be awhile before this is resolved. Based on the recommendation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the grand jury charged Smollett with making false reports to the CPD, etc. I won't go into that further, but the former US Attorney in charge of the investigation said that the "prosecution is in the interest of justice."

So, Smollett is going to stand trial and face the justice system.

Consider now the former President, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, et al who spent time both before (Trump) and after (everyone) the general election on a concerted effort to promote a false conspiracy, rally around this conspiracy, and then foment events with the objective of stopping the ratification of a certified election. Events which have led to death, injury, trauma, and property damage/repair in excess of a million dollars. The lost lives will be forever, hopefully the injuries will be overcome or heal to a certain degree. The property damage is brought up because it pales in comparison to the nationwide property damage (around 1 Billion estimated) with the exception of one teeny tiny thing: a democratic America with free and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power is priceless. This was not peaceful and it came with a horrible horrible price.

Ocasio-Cortez has to return to work daily with the very people who encouraged, aided, and abetted this sedition. She hears them speak in the Chambers, over their social media accounts, in prime time. She receives the death threats on her VM, in her inbox, on the internet. And then once more, she walks the halls and tunnels with colleagues who seemed willing to support her being hunted and killed and when she raises objections, make light of her anxiety and alarm. She was not wrong about it mirroring an abusive situation and how society treats and views women's attitudes about it. Someone banging on the door saying 'police' (and in hindsight-- the number of police among the insurrectionists) many victims of domestic violence have had no way of certainty whether they were to be handed over to their abusers.

Anyone see Josh Hawley facing justice? Ted Cruz? Will the former President this week? No. The Big Lie and the coup attempt has always been the Big Lie and coup attempt, and sweeping it under the rug, gaslighting it, and having no REAL accountability foretells that America as a representative democracy is in its final moments.

I've just caught up on this. I think it's a poor habit to dismiss amateur operatives or those dabbling in amateur operations for the right as stupid. Not merely because it's rude, but because it leads to underestimating how effective their tactics can be.

Google AOC Meme. Two rows of right-generated memes claiming she's an idiot. Ironically, most of the memes are idiotic retreads of past pollack jokes.

A person coming here seeming to see both sides but then dropping some bombs comparing Ocasio-Cortez to Smollett then making a false claim about the left being unyielding defenders of Smollett (suggesting that one day they will realize AOC is just as bad?), and then back-peddling in hopes of seeming reasonable is not being stupid. That process is a strategy.

It's the same old strategy of the hate engine. I remember listening to Limbaugh when all I got was AM radio in my old truck. He created a nexus from eco-terrorists putting spikes in trees hoping to harm lumberjacks to environmental wackos to the "Democrat" party. Dems and libs are terrorists by association.

Ocasio-Cortez plays us as dupes just as Smollett did.

That's not being stupid. That's willingness to embrace being disingenuous so you can get into the game to help your team.

What I see is the GOPs going to the old playbook. "Let's argue about how much of an enemy of the state that brown chick from NY is."

It's the premise that kills. It did so literally on January 6, 2021.

Don't dismiss it as stupid. That's like trying to deal with an infection by yelling at it.

I know we’re off on a “VotEr fRaUD” tangent but to bring it back to AOC and Tlaib and other members of “The Squad”....

I have have a real fucking problem with all these Republican men trying to belittle and mansplain about trauma without acknowledging how female trauma is fundamentally different than male trauma.

Until you spend your entire existence knowing 50% of the population is physically stronger and bigger than you. And live with the fear that the same 50% has a element of sexual violence that often accompanies physical violence that isn’t usually a threat to men.

And being told your whole life that it’s your responsibility to “act right” (don’t go anywhere alone at night, don’t dress a “certain way”, be “polite” to vulgar predators to placate them instead of pushing back, to take the responsibility to avoid “problems” instead of forcing the predators to “act right”, to just grin and bear and it.

Women live with a entirely unfair and unjust system that requires them to modify their existence in order to “be safe”.

All that conditioning from the time we’re faced with the fact that hatred from men includes an acknowledgment that any threat to use includes a calculation most men never have to even think about in passing.

Men may have to worry about getting beat up - women have to worry about sexual violence on top of physical violence.

Do we think Adam Schiff or Bernie Sanders or Ted Lieu get very detailed rape threats? No, of course not.

That element of threat to women adds an entire extra level of fear.

That manifests itself in more severe fear and anxiety and a trauma.

So for men to brush off that very significant element of the difference between how men and women deal with threats and the resulting lasting trauma.

So, in conclusion, until I hear these men acknowledge that there is an extra level of threat when it comes to women vs. men I invite them to shut the fuck up.

So how do we go about getting you to a state where you can get elected to Congress?

So how do we go about getting you to a state where you can get elected to Congress?

lol - I don’t think that’s in the cards for me.

I don’t have the ability to not cuss people out and call the “deplorables” a much more accurate insult.

I’d have to move to Berkeley or Williamsburg or something.

Well, my friends, let me come back and say I took the last 8 hours to take a break and really listen. Getting excited and shooting off the hip without having seen the meme or really caring too much about the broader conversation I now realize is unacceptable. I promise to continue to listen and learn and do better. Being vulnerable and pushing ourselves to learn and grow is what we've built our community on, and I hope to get back to the supportive and kind environment we’ve built together.

And to Tantric; I’ll never, ever understand how someone can appreciate and like Pan’s Labyrinth. I don’t want to live in a world where that movie is tolerated, much less celebrated.

But I respect and defend your right to say it. Amen brother.

^^ I’ll edit to add because I can imagine a lot of people not getting the joke and a copy and paste of Hilaria Baldwins insta apology.. joking aside I am sorry for rankling folks feathers. It’s not a hill I want to die on and I guess I didn’t really truly understand how much everyone thought Juicy was a joke, on all sides. I really am sorry for interjecting that sentence and should have just let sleeping dogs lie and Chapelle’s mic drop have been then end.

In college my friend downloaded Brazil and also Pans Labyrinth at the same time. Somehow the titles got mixed. I never made it past the scene where a lady eating in a restaurant with a shoe as hat with a terrorist attack happening took place due to a mixture of being drunk and the movie sucking third leg. For a solid 5-6 years I thought the movie Brazil was Pans Labyrinth. Every Reddit thread and internet site told me Pans Labyrinth was good and it made me distrust the internet. I have no enthusiasm to try this again, but if I could get a 4-5 sentence rundown of the movie, I’d very much appreciate it.

I didn’t start it, I just finished it.

FattyFatty is an over sensitive little boy who brings nothing to this board.

I rarely bring up football but if someone is going to insult me and my university, I’m going to fire back.

99% of the posters here have made me feel welcomed here and it’s utter bullshittery to proclaim I’m unwelcome on “our board” because of where I’m from or where I went to school.

He doesn’t spew that shit a slorch, or ChiTown, or the UCLA, Notre Dame, Florida, aggie, Iowa State etc. fans.

He doesn’t have the mental ability to debate me without calling me a “gump” therefore trying to imply I’m some redneck idiot.

Fuck him and all these “Republicans” slithering back to this board now that Trump is gone trying to pretend they weren’t too scared to engage while he was in office.

FWIW, I think most of our posters that didn't go to UT are some of the better ones on here.  Shit, I only went to UT for 2.5 years and I get some shit for not being a multi-generational Texan/Longhorn, but for the most part it's a non-issue.  I'm used to the "You're not from Texas" crap because it makes people who contribute very little to this state feel better about themselves.  The things people are most proud of in their life (birthplace, family name, religion/faith, family business, height, eye color, etc.) are the things they had zero control over.

Give me a handful of people who chose, later in life, where to study, where to live, what to work on, and how to live their best faith.  those are the people in the arena, not the "don't you know how many years ago my paw-paw raised cattle at ranch xyz?" crowd.

Reason I bring it up again is because I see it more and more in politics with Trump being gone now (or hopefully gone).  More and more hardcore GOP'ers I know and work with on political shit are starting to give the ole' Nuremberg treatment.

-It was just family tradition to go along with the Republican Party (was in my family too IRL...In austin, Chicago, and the Rio Grande Valley where it ain't exactly popular to swing that way).

-We didn't know how far Trump was gonna take it.  We just wanted some judicial nominations.

-We were lost in the chaos of the day.  We didn't know where each moment, each turn, each marching order would take us.

-We were just following orders.  Seemed like Trump knew what he was doing and had a vision and we wanted to keep our country Great!

-We didn't realize the scope of what he was doing.  How could we know?

Every defeated group clings to the same excuses.  And then they lay down their arms and their uniforms/flags, they accept their punishment and their conquerors, and they pridefully rebuild themselves later on to become a decent and functioning society again.  Hitler committed suicide, Hirohito surrendered without condition, Mussolini was executed...and all...all of their peoples admitted evil, accepted peace and occupation, and rebuilt honorable societies far greater than their twisted leaders could have ever possibly imagined.

But what none of their followers ever tried to claim at trial was that the crimes they were accused of...never happened.  And therein Donald Trump and followers sit solely alone in the arena of history.  As they have tried furiously for 5 weeks to content, the insurrectional attack to usurp our Democracy...never happened.  Sure, some people entered the Capitol and vandalized it a bit...but it was never a coup attempt.  Some Trumpers say they were following orders, many will say they didn't realize the scope of the breach, and even more will say they were lost in the fog of the moment.  These are the three standard, historically proven excuses of every insurrectionist, every war criminal, every treasonous operator.

Our nation is truly lost not when Republican Senators and Trump fans accept those three excuses for they ride with historical precedent for a reason.  The Republic will be on thin ice when the Republican Senators accept the fourth excuse which is beyond the pale, "The Assault on the Capitol never happened.  It was the spontaneous acts of vandalism of a handful of bad actors.  But it wasn't an insurrection caused by anyone, not even ANTIFA.  It was camera angle tricks and media hyperbole that caused the national fervor.  But there was no assault, no breach, not insurrection, no coup attempt.  What you're positing...never happened."  And with that, the story and Democracy........go to sleep.
