I spent some time around the Jewish Quarter of Shanghai whilst doing business.  Fascinating story, architecture, and history there.  I don't know what I was expecting, like a Northwest Hills sized neighborhood, but it was robust and rich with legacy.  Hope to take a deeper dive someday with the whole family.  Pos rep.

I’d think the Republicans would have the edge in a cousin fucking debate.

Just a hunch, based on the rebel flags. And Rudy.

Hebrew is the common language in Israel; still, Orthodox Jews reserve Hebrew for the synagogue, and speak Yiddish day to day. Or, so I’ve read.

I had no idea.  I just know my great-grandparents were Polish-speaking Jews from shtetls in Lithuania (great-grandfather) and Poland/Belarus (great-grandmother) who immigrated over  to the states right before 1900 just like in Fiddler On The Roof and changed their name (whatever their previous last name was is my real last name).

There's actually nothing to it. Being cantankerous is easy, if you're cantankerous. On the other hand, throw me in a blue area, like say a white hippy party in Berkeley circa 2003, say, and I was ready to jump out of my skin, couldn't say boo without the room clamming up probably wondering if I was fixing to skin a squirrel. Only thing that saved my skin was a black lesbian veteran showed up, we hit it off telling Army stories and singing obscene Army marching songs, well, the two of US had fun.

Put me down for Tits Boebert.

90% of Texas County Judges ?

she specified 5 charities in her fund raising, none of them are giving money back

I’ve posted it before, but AOC has come to Texas quite often and attended the most Leslie Knope kind of student government summer camp you could think of in Maxwell Texas.

Starting in 2005 as a teenager, Ocasio-Cortez participated in the National Hispanic Institute programs that Nieto and his wife Gloria de Leon created 41 years ago this summer. That program, now headquartered outside of San Marcos in Maxwell, was designed to help promising Latino students develop leadership skills and public policy knowledge to help them become lifelong leaders.

Its alumni include Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, U.S. Rep. Xochitl Liana Torres Small, D-New Mexico, and New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca, along with an estimated 100,000 other Latinos.

But of all the students, Nieto saw something very special about Ocasio-Cortez, who was a sophomore in high school when she enrolled.

Ted is an invertebrate so she had an edge already.

Remember when some poster was insisting she was nothing more but the liberals' attack dog akin to Jim Jordan and Tucker Carlson? I remember.

I saw it this morning and was a little sad. How hard it must be to say--'hey, that's a great thing to do, I hope other politicians do likewise.' I wouldn't have thought all that hard, really. I'm much more angry when politicians divert money into their own pockets, but it didn't look like this was the case. The Mattress guy has been helping, I remember JJ Watt doing a lot during Harvey. When people are helping, the response is, "thank you, I hope to return the favor for others in need someday."

But  some folks just get more and more bitter.

mattress mac, a furniture store owner, has done more to help the average texan in the last week than ted cruz has during his whole political career.

Im sure all the rage bros who were white knighting Barstool for raising millions for small businesses (which was fantastic) will be sure to do the same for AOC and her efforts....

And he should be your Republican candidate for Senator. He gives a shit. That makes him better than the rest.

That quote sums up the current republican mentality perfectly. If you are in dire straits it’s your own fault and you should be left to your own devices to figure it out

A safety net is necessary. Argue about how extensive or limited to make it to take care of folks without disincentivizing their productivity, but to argue there shouldn’t be one is straight up evil

The thing about Ocasio-Cortez is that even if one adopts a cynical view that her appearance in Texas was political theatre, there's no credible argument to be made that she is not sincere. That's the difference between pols like her and dickholes like Ted Cruz. She's an empath where Traitor Ted is a soulless garbage troll.

The world would be a better place if someone carpet bombed College Station.

This right here. I was absolutely not a fan for a long time, and even got in trouble a while back for a shitty, tongue in cheek post (on this thread I believe).

She’s fucking doing something. Regardless of whether or not there’s an agenda, she’s fucking doing something.

Call me a fan of hers at this point.

Helping people in need has long been a political ploy. It’s not a bad thing. Beats the fuck out of just finding someone to blame.

Of course, it's politics 101. But in her case it has more impact because she is obviously more genuine. Her adversaries will disagree with her politics, but she fuckin walks the walk.

Exactly. Why the need to try to see beyond the surface of a kind and gracious act? One does so because one despises his own lack of kindness and grace.

Trump is their man because he is them. Never wrong. Never thankful. Ever petty. Defined by whomever they hate.

Fuck Trump and Fuck Aggy.

I absolutely love Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. If all politicians conducted themselves as she does even though they may not share her policy ideas, we'd be in a hell of lot better country and state.

Compliments to AOC and those she has teamed up with to bring good things to people in need.

What  politician has not engaged in Politics 101?

It's like criticizing the average Joe for breathing.  They wouldn't be politicians if they weren't wired to be political.  The judgment needs to start at "political", not stop there.  Which ones do good things, which ones don't?  AOC is absolutely on the "does good things" list, regardless of her motives.

This isn't difficult.

do good things --> help people --> gain popularity --> get reelected.

republicans are obsessed with the last step but have no idea how to get there.

This is going to be a lot more important than people think. There is a lot of emotionally fragile right wing Texans right now that are looking at what she’s doing and wondering why they’ve been told she was so terrible for the last 2 years. I’m related to one of them. People are seeing the truth at a very emotional time. This is going to matter in Texas politics.

I've also been a critic at times, and I still think she's earned some of that.  But she's busting her ass to DO something when we need it.  Much respect.
