Probably a better thread, but this has been where Centerpoint has been discussed most:

https://www.click2houston.com/consumer/2024/11/14/audit-for-major-us-energy-company-centerpoint-after-accusations-its-overcharging-customers-100m-a-year

HOUSTON – Major U.S. energy provider CenterPoint Energy is under scrutiny following allegations of overcharging customers by $100 million annually. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) has approved an audit to examine the company’s spending of taxpayer dollars.

The PUC voted Thursday to find a third party to audit CenterPoint. Not only has the energy company been accused of overcharging, they’ve been criticized by customers and the state’s Lt. Governor Dan Patrick for spending $800M to lease 20 massive mobile generators. Fifteen of them have never been used because they’re not all that mobile -- they take days to move.

PUC Chairman Thomas Gleeson emphasized the audit will assess CenterPoint’s emergency operations and generator allocation. The audit report is expected by April.

Bombogenesis sounds like a faux-Jamaican British pop reggae outfit from the late 80s that you’re embarrassed to say you listened to but lowkey had some real bangers.

I was gonna say it sounds like it would be a song by Tricky, but we're on the same page.

We don't have a centerpoint thread, but wouldn't you know it, they had their most profitable year EVER last year while failing to deliver power to 2.2 million Houstonians for days

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/centerpoint-energy-reports-1-billion-profits-2024-20163633.php

CenterPoint reported a profit of more than $1 billion in 2024, despite widespread outages after the May derecho and July’s Hurricane Beryl. That’s an increase of $152 million from the company’s reported profits in 2023, and similar to its reported profits in 2022

In the fourth quarter of 2024, CenterPoint reported a profit of $248 million, an increase of $56 million from the same period last year.

...

Much of the company’s profitability is concentrated in its Houston-area businesses. Indeed, CenterPoint's earnings are expected to continue booming in the coming years as the Houston metro’s demand for electricity increases at a “truly remarkable” pace, CEO Jason Wells told investors and analysts during the company’s earnings call Thursday morning.

Don’t worry. Dan Patrick is investigating and will get to the bottom of it

That's just pure capitalism right there, that's what that is.

I need someone to explain to me in simple words how the city's power infrastructure being controlled by a for-profit monopoly makes any goddamn sense.

If it's to be a monopoly, shouldn't it be government-run, or at least non-profit? If it's to be for-profit, shouldn't it have competitors? How the fuck can it be both things?

See, back in the 90s, we “deregulated” the entire electric market, because making our system for-profit would lead to innovation, lower costs, and better service….and massive profits for the private enterprises.

Also, only the last thing was true.

How very tort reform-y….

At least they withdrew their rate increase. Quit your bitching.

PEC actually gave me a few bucks back recently

Stop posting that turd in the DT.

I'll post whatever the hell I want to post.  We're talking NOAA cuts, guess where they came from?

Ooh, a neg rep.  Pussy.

Cuts to NOAA, NWS, & FEMA are in the news and going to make tornado and hurricane seasons that much more fun, you know?

Do you not care to see a reminder of the cause and the ensuing consequences of those cuts?

Are we supposed to just pretend there isn't a turd floating in the punchbowl?

"You know, Bob, there's a bit of a whang to this punch, wouldn't you say?"

"I know what you mean, Jim. Maybe it was a bad idea to let Stan take a shit in it."

"FUCK YOU FOR REMINDING ME! Don't ever bring him up again. Now, drink up and stop complaining."

No, I don’t want to hear about him at all. I purposely ignore whatever it is he does. That’s why I stay out of the CR unless it is a thread that I was once interested in that got moved from the DT.

Man, I'd like to be able to pretend there wasn't a turd in the punchbowl, too, but that is one gnarly greasy log.

WTH is going on (random backhand from divers seat)  Don't make me pull this station wagon over on the side of the road and give you both something cry about /best mom voice

Yeah, ignoring the guy who’s dismantling agencies like NOAA that play a vital role in public safety seems like a good strategy.

Fuck off with that bullshit. Their was no commentary made regarding the motivations behind his political actions, only a statement of fact that our government is taking a hatchet to the services that we rely on for all manner of things. In a thread about hurricanes, its not political to state that Trump's admin is cutting staff from the agencies that monitor hurricanes. Its fact. The world isnt compartmentalized for snowflakes, stop being such a fucking little child.

A big reason we're in this mess is because of people who would prefer to stay out of politics.

This shit affects us all.

Y’all are acting like we aren’t going to know if a hurricane could form or that we are suddenly not going to able to track a tropical storm. It’s hyperbolic.  I don’t support Trump. I did not vote for him.  I don’t support the cuts because I don’t like to see people lose their jobs, but I think we’ll be ok going into tropical storm season.

The Hurricane Hunters that fly into the storms to take measurements are part of the NOAA, but I'm sure that's not really needed, we can just track the hurricanes by the trail of destruction

He stands alone on that great wall. Defending us from the evils of those who dare make any mention of....checks notes.....the president of our own country. The nerve of those people discussing relevant information.

Woman screams as Donald Trump is sworn in as President

he's a goddamn internet hero for he will never relinquish his cause, and yet somehow, he never gets the praise he knows he deserves.

Shocker.  Drive by click to hopefully see 2025 hurricane forecast and it's another Cloak Room thread like this entire board at this point.

Trump/Elon bitching is fucking everywhere.   I get it.  I despise them too.  But it's nonstop for certain posters no matter the topic. I'll just stick to stars thread, 9.95 and food and travel. Only places that have so far been immune.   Continue on.

I was looking at texags about the noaa cuts. Those geniuses figured out you can just look at the weather app on your phone so there is no need for noaa or anything

pretty damn close to the Stars thread.  some fucknut was doing it on the NHL thread during the 4 Nations.  I can't imagine being that miserable of a person, and I'm a miserable person most of the time.

First of all *there.

Secondly, there was only commentary posted and no statement of fact in the post I commented on.
