but when was the last time you or anyone you know stepped inside a Red Lobster?

The late 1970s.  I was 5.  I was not impressed.  But my wife recalls being dragged there on a couple of co-worker birthday requests and has fond memories of the cheddar biscuits, as I assume do most.  But my sensory memory doesn't recall what I had at the so-called Dirty Lob or whether I liked it much.  So I haven't a hankering or a sadness in response to this news.  I also know that I have said for years that our local RL could have another RL across the street from it, and they'd both be packed.

As for Steak & Ale, yes to all of the above.  In Houston, we also had Steak and Egg, which was more late night steak at the diner-bar type of place.  As a kid, I remember going to one-offs like Circus Restaurant on Westheimer, Mama's, Papa's, The Strawberry Patch, and Houston's.  For Tex-Mex, it was Molina's.  As for anything fancier, they didn't waste it on the kids until we were old enough to appreciate it.

Edit to add, Cliff's for burgers (still) or JCI for a large-group burger scenario or Hamburgers by Gourmet for the best burger of all time.

That place punched way above its weight.  And I'm now reading it was a Pappa's owned restaurant.  Honestly, no surprise.

Arby’s. Down to 1 location “inside” the loop in Houston, and for good reason. Even the classic roast beef, and beef & cheese sucks at the location near NRG.

Patiently waiting for the government to come down on them for deceptive advertising.

Government needs to mind its own fucking business in regards to Arby’s.

I'm cool with local zoning ordinances that do not allow Arby's to build new locations.

They can keep slinging their freezer burned meat from where they're already at -as it's on you at this point if you haven't figured them out-, but they don't get to take any additional real estate off the market.

Last time I ate subway was several years ago. I remember that I wasn't disgusted, but it felt like I wasn't eating real food. Like maybe I was served some fake food that they use on display at furniture stores.

The only Subway I like is a local one that let me, a non-customer, take a shit in their bathroom one night when I had explosive diarrhea. Bought a cookie on the way out, it was the classy thing to do.

We get coupons in the mail from them frequently but the two stores near us don’t accept them, guess something is looking out for us.

It’s a solid option if you’re driving and it’s nothing but truck stops for the next couple hundred miles.

Not bad for an airport either.

I used to do this all the time, buy the sub then eat it maybe an hour later when I wasn't busy. But there is so much sodium in them now, I feel like I need to down a galloon of water afterwards. Which, needless to say, defeats the purpose of eating them on the go when I now need to piss aver 34 minutes

I've seen more Fuzzy Taco's closures in the last 12 months, I think it's doomed.

I haven't eaten Subway in 10+ years and would probably just not eat before eating that weird meat and suspect food.

But I do love Jimmy John's. I'm a complicated man.

Jimmy John’s is where I go when I want a bread sandwich. Way too much bread and not enough meat.

Jersey Mikes is way better.

That hot pepper relish at Jersey Mike's is a fine addition to a sandwich.

You need to switch up your order.  JJ Gargantuan is the shit, and it's about 3:1 meat:bread.

There isn't a stretch of road in America that doesn't have better options for "real" food than Subway.  If I was faced w/ Subway vs truck stop as my only options, it's Gardetto's and orange Gatorade for the next stretch.

Haven’t had JJs in ages and the Gargantuan was the go to, JMikes we do most often when they have their fundraiser drive, DiBella’s is our sandwich chain by choice.

Was looking for a JJs at a location I thought was still open… nope. We ended up at a Red Robin so I ordered the jalapeno heatwave burger only with grilled chicken instead of beef. It came with pepper jack cheese, grilled & fried jalapeños, guacamole & red pepper flakes, thought it was very good and would have again if ever go back to RR.

Long John Silvers reopened yesterday in Amarillo in a new building( fresh grease) for the first time since 2019. The vehicles in line for the drive thru stretched for over 12 blocks.

I don't get it.  That shit could have been free and I ain't waiting that long.

My guess is it the best “seafood” in Amarillo.

My dad raised me to never eat seafood more than two hours drive from saltwater.  That rule has served me well all the days of my life.

First and last time I ate at a Longjohn Silver's my mom wanted to try it on a trip into Houston for supplies for her craft shop.  The floor was so greasy that we could barely stay upright.  We stayed and tried it anyway and found that the slick floor was the highlight of the experience.

Never shoot pool against a guy named "Pop."

Never eat at a diner called "Mom's."

Also never eat a huge amount of shellfish, guzzle a gallon of hard cider on top of it, and try to walk a mile home at midnight. The body has pressure relief valves and it will use them.

LJS rules.

Should add we’re trying another ljs copycat recipe tonight.

LJS chicken planks (tenders) are criminally underrated.

Jim's is still open.

20250803_090646.thumb.jpg.73b4e4b3fd4276fd68e288fd47b90292.jpg

Somehow Jim’s at 183/Burnet and 183/Spicewood are still open.  Honestly, I have not been to one in 10 years and eaten at one in around 30 years (just had a coke 10 years ago).

Amazing that it has survived.  Glad to see it has.

Every couple of years I need to have a couple thousand calories for breakfast in the form of a chicken fried steak and eggs w/ hash browns, so I'm glad Jim's is still kickin'.

Best one is in SATX at 410/Broadway.

I've eaten at both in the past month.

It's not going to blow you away but it's still solid. Maybe been a couple years now since I last ate at the one on 71.
