Its not going to blow you away, unlike Waffle House patrons.

Jim's is still open.
20250803_090646.thumb.jpg.73b4e4b3fd4276fd68e288fd47b90292.jpg

Jim’s is damned fine. Great diner breakfast, fluffy biscuits, and maybe the best chorizo and egg taco in town (you heard me). And their burger is first-rate…or at least it was when I last had one.

As for LJS, one of the most surreal scenes was at the Brownwood location. I was on a late road trip for work to Sweetwater. Needed to grab something to eat in the car, saw LJS and thought hell yeah, fish sammich. As I pulled up, a pickup with a flatbed parked next to me. Three cowboys got out. I don’t mean they dressed like it, I mean they were legit bow-legged, were wearing well-worn spurs, dirt on the back of their necks, the whole deal. They walk inside in front of me and order their LJS combo plates, and it just seemed weird as hell. But eat what you want, fellas. You earned it.

Well, it looks like I’ll be visiting a Jim’s in the next week or two.  I’ll report back…

Dumb And Dumber Reaction GIF

This happened to me almost 20 years ago after eating at a Subway in San Marcos. Not sure I've eaten at one since.

I have threatened to take my kids to Subway. They're spoiled having Jersey Mike's as an option.

My dad raised me to never eat seafood more than two hours drive from saltwater.  That rule has served me well all the days of my life.

First and last time I ate at a Longjohn Silver's my mom wanted to try it on a trip into Houston for supplies for her craft shop.  The floor was so greasy that we could barely stay upright.  We stayed and tried it anyway and found that the slick floor was the highlight of the experience.

Of course, a greasy floor is a sign of a poorly run restaurant of any type.

Get into a good LJS, where they clean the floors and change the frying oil, and it's a pretty credible version of fish n chips.  And, as mentioned, if you're afraid of fast-food fish, the chicken planks are pretty damn good.  They put crack or something in that batter and have malt vinegar, so that's about all you need to say about that.

Your dad's rule is sound, though.

This hits close to home because I drove by that location Friday on the way back from Colorado and felt the gravitational effect of a 2 fish, 3 chicken plank plus hush puppies combo start to pull me in before I slapped myself awake and remembered I can't eat 3000 calorie meals anymore without paying for it later.

I mean it's 1350 calories before drink, not even close to 3000

For those so inclined, Monday's is any two meals for $14.99 at Long John Silver's.

They had a special last week for buy one platter, get one free. I may or may not have had two Fish and Chicken platters.

Means you can get 2 combos and still be under 3000*!

25+ years ago, picked up a buddy to go hit the white bass run on the San Gabriel.  He says "I haven't eaten today, swing through this LJS so I can get some food."  So I hit the drive thru, he orders his meal, and says "and give me an extra sack of crunchies."

They hand him an entire brown lunch bag full of those things.  I sat there next to him like this:

I had no idea that such a thing was even possible, I thought you just got the random crunchies that ended up in your order, and that was your limit.  No, apparently....there is no limit on LJS crunchies.

Hush!

They certainly didn’t sound like crumblies when I used to eat them.

They used to be called "crumbs" at least when I was in college. Used to get them every time.  However time and lower metabolism makes would make me avoid them today

Allsup's burritos FTW!

I was ordering extra crunchies in the 80's on the regular.  They were absolutely awesome and disgusting.  They were the reason I loved LJS as an 8 year old and also the reason I haven't been to one in over 25 years now.  You couldn't pry them out of my greasy hands back then and you couldn't pay me enough to eat them today.

A bag of those is my wife’s standard order at a place like this.  Typically if she eats fried chicken or cfs there is a 50/50 chance she just peels off the fried batter and leaves the meat.  “You want this? “ if there’s gravy I’ll usually eat it as I was raised that wasting food is a sin and a starving kid in Botswana will die if I leave it on the plate.

I thought that was universally known as an order of "fried fried"?

Jimmy John’s is where I go when I want a bread sandwich. Way too much bread and not enough meat.

Jersey Mikes is way better.

Jersey Mikes is better.  Howevah….I love a JJ’s because it reminds me of my own homemade sammich in high school of one $.99 loaf of Gerland’s (grocery store) fresh french bread and add ham and cheese.  That fresh french bread was so damn awesome and JJ is the closest thing to that.  One time I saw them actually gouging out the center of the bread before making the sandwich and I said “hold up, put that bread back in there”.

Chuy's is already there, and it started its nosedive before the pandemic.  But the only thing propping it up is its national chain portfolio acquisition that keeps pumping out outposts in places like Oklahoma, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, and Kentucky, where diners will go to a place affectionately known as "Chuy's" that offers "Tex-Mex" with its origins in Austin, Texas, so it must be good.  And that's because people are dumb with inoperable tastebuds.

I haven't been in years.  That said, they still have the chuychanga with deluxe tomatillo and chips and salsa with creamy jalapeno as well.  As long as they can still execute on those items, I'd have a fine meal there.  Don't really give a shit about the rest of their menu.  But then....I'm also not desperate for it, see the fact that I haven't been in years.

I have a friend who loves that place, so we go about once per year, most recently a couple months ago.  I always shoot it down when it's suggested by this friend, but every now and then I have to give in to maintain the peace.  I can always get by with a margarita and chips, salsa, and creamy jalapeno, if nothing else.

But this time I was pretty hungry and ordered food from among my "safe" options. Chuychanga was the same, and creamy jalapeno the same.  Despite my warning and her better judgment, my wife ordered their standard cheese enchiladas with their Tex-Mex con carne sauce on top.  That dish has historically been pretty terrible at Chuy's, among the worst things on their menu.  But this time it was... actually edible.  Not great, but better than it has been for the past 10, 20, 30 years.

I don't know, maybe corporate actually looks good on them.

But I'm still not going back for another year...

Once every year or two I have a craving for a Chuy's steak burrito.

I always though the green chili chicken stew at Chuy's kicked ass.  But they took that off the menu right around the time they started sucking.

No matter what I order at Chuy's, I always leave feeling bloated and awful.  I think it's probably an abundance of salt in their salsa (or everything I eat there).  It's another level compared to most Tex-Mex places I go.  I try to avoid it at all costs.

Have you considered the possibility that you might be an America-hating wussy communist, whose weakness is harming our cultural strength and purity?

Or....maybe we're all just getting older, and can't handle all the shit that never even used to phase us.  Goddammit.

It's the best thing on the menu, not that the bar is high.

Always with boom-boom sauce, of course.

No.  I did not consider that possibility for a single second.
