June 18, 20241 yr Didn’t know anything about William Beckmann until someone posted him above. Here he is covering a “Los Bukis” song (Marco Antonio Solís). In the previous post he was covering Vicente. Side note: this dude sings pretty damn good country.
June 18, 20241 yr Being a brass player, I love banda. A lot or the modern stuff is synthesized unfortunately, but a real banda band just kicks ass, it's just insane
June 18, 20241 yr I was wondering who would introduce Banda to the mix. Fitting that it’s a Czech! So Banda has a nasty reputation that it’s “for rancho/poor/uneducated people”. I laugh at that perception because it’s usually Mexicans that are trying to be “sophisticated” that talk shit about Banda (or gringos that associate Banda with illegals/construction workers…therefore if you listen to Banda you’re illegal/construction worker since Banda is played at construction sites…well no shit it gets the workers hype and enjoying the work day). I have German friends that love Banda because the sounds and melodies are very similar to German music. I’ve danced Banda with an 80 year old German lady because of how much she liked it and reminded her of German bands. There are variations of Banda too, some do say stupid ass stuff about killing and nothing but violent shit, that I don’t care about. But the classics, I’ll bump to as well.

My polka band is one of the few pure brass bands left in Texas, we've been told many times that we have a very mariachi sound. Love it.
June 18, 20241 yr I'm not sure that the musicians were even playing the same song in that second Banda video. Now polka - Twin Lakes Polka, Yamahoozie Polka aka Kiss Me Polka, Polka Twist . . . @UTCzech III does your band ever make it north of Austin?

No. Just north of Austin, sure, we were in Ennis last month and have a few Oktoberfest dates in Round Rock, Taylor, etc later this year.

June 19, 20241 yr UT was always Mexico dominated. I learned a lot from going to ILAS there. BTW, we kicked MAS's ass when we played. So will walk away from the Merengue and go South America. If these songs are not Surly I quit. Perhaps the worst song...
June 19, 20241 yr Let tiro un poco de Mano Negra/Manu Chao. A great moment. My old stomping grounds. Bluest sky, brownest earth.

Not surprising that Spotify's automated "DJ" played this as "something I think you'll like". He was right. No idea what it's about, and don't really want to know. Natalia is a force of nature. She comes from French (circus?) people who settled in Veracruz, got kicked in the head by a horse as a child, and just keeps knocking them out of the park. Here is the same song with Los Angeles Azules: Looks like she'll be in Texas in August, according to the notes on above video. I moved to Mexico around when one of her first songs came out, and she was leaping about like a drunk muppet. My girffriend didn't like her because she was "Chilanga," an inaccurate critique that didn't help our relationship.
June 20, 20241 yr Author This is an ancient video from a couple who traveled through Central America, but it speaks to me. Music by Manu Chao and Cuban Barrio. If you want to jump straight to A Caballo Vamos pa'l Monte, here you go: Earlier version of same song, aka El Carretero. If you've ever crossed a mountain on horseback, this captures it:

June 20, 20241 yr Peru. Dude slayed all over Latin America. Wife was an amazing Chef in San Juan. When I moved to Peru his family adopted us. Late nights in down town Lima after curfew eating Pan con Pavo and sharing beers out out of a single cup. Edited June 20, 20241 yr by InkaUtexas
June 21, 20241 yr Blanco White is an Englishman that studied flamenco guitar in Spain and folk music in Bolivia.
June 21, 20241 yr @RDCanecutter. Always enjoy this version as its a tribute to Vicente from several different artists.
June 26, 20241 yr Great thread. So I was doing a little innerwebz research on "Volver, Volver" which has always struck me as a timeless classic. One of those songs that's just always been around. Turns out I was dead wrong. It was written in 1972. Hit in 1973. So it's a relatively recent song. I hope you found that as interesting as I did.
June 27, 20241 yr i have a lot of spanish language music that i really enjoy. most of my favs tend to be a bit romantic. my favs... silvio rodriguez - cuban singer songwriter. there was a good cover of mi unicornio done by cecilia noel. probably my favorite just straight up singer-songwriter love song. also a bit of a cheat because this song was playing the first time i made out with a colombian classmate my soph year at ut who was stunningly hot. old school jose jose is nostalgic and awesome. i love the el tributo album where a bunch of bands did covers of jose jose songs. lots to like about this one.

He did this at the Robert Earl Keen fan appreciation show after his "final" shows at Floore's. I wasn't really paying attention and then he belted this out and everyone started paying attention. Also saw him at Cheatham Street a few months later, really good voice.
June 30, 20241 yr Guatemalan guitarists raised in Switzerland. It’s all instrumental cosmic guitar music for stoners. Really good stuff.

July 1, 20241 yr Sorry if someone has already posted this. We listened to this as kids in Camagüey years before Castro. Many artists have done a version. Im partial to this Sandpipers version. A nostalgic song for me as it reminds of my childhood, and a much different Cuba.

He played either El Rey or Volver, Volver (or both?) to a packed house. Loved that he'll do it on the big stage and the small, he's a true Border Kid.
July 11, 20241 yr just did a ctrl+f for manu chao, glad to see he's represented here. clandestino is one of my favorite albums of any genre

I take my kids to a little Mexican restaurant every Friday morning before school for breakfast. This one came on and it took me right back to my kitchen days. Had to get my server to type it out because I'm a pinche gringo. Figures that it's already here. Another one from the kitchen days:
November 15, 20241 yr I saw Los Angeles Azules in Irving earlier this year and they were fantastic. I even got a special shoutout as a white dude in the audience.
November 23, 20241 yr I know Merengue is not that popular with the group, but if this does not get your ass moving you are dead. Or passed out on Brugal.
January 7Jan 7 Music adjacent. Saw this documentary on the plane back from Argentina and it is worth watching. If you're in this thread, you'll enjoy it. Follows some high school mariachi bands in the RGV in their quest for winning state.
