Gotta figure it out then. Thinking rent house in chandler first year? Rent houses are f’ing stupid right now.

The Valley has something for just about anyone with the exception of a vibrant downtown living scene, but even that has made a ton of progress over the last decade. What part of town will you be working? Do you have wife, kids, etc? Chandler wouldn't be my choice, but a lot of people love it out there. We're not suburb people so hence the reason we made Arcadia in PHX proper our homebase for so many years.
December 16, 20232 yr That’s amazing. Kind of settled on chandler today after talking to the dudes in the office. Work is in Tempe. No wife no kids.
December 16, 20232 yr We take urban sprawl to the max, but the road system for the most part does a really good job of keeping traffic flowing. Ofcourse I am way out east so there is never any traffic for me. what part of chandler? I contine to be impressed with what they have done in Downtown Gilbert. If scottsdale was a bottle blonde with fake tits, downtown Gilbert is turning into that same chick after she gets divorced and is going through a milf'y phase
December 16, 20232 yr Move north to Phoenix/Peoria/Glendale/Scottsdale or if you feel very adventurous go to cave creek/carefree. You will save yourself drive time getting out of Phoenix in the summer to go to Prescott/Sedona/flagstaff.

Tempe is a great place to work since it's so centrally located. That gives you tons of options on places to live. It sounds like you're getting a lot of advice to head in the Chandler direction so the question I have is are the dudes in the office also single with no kids? Without those two things, you don't need to give a shit about schools or how close the nearest Costco is. Since you're going to rent for a year, I might try to find a good rental house in Scottsdale south (arbitrarily) of Shea. You would be close enough to work and also close to the best parts of Scottsdale, Phoenix and Tempe. The dating options around that part if town are also a ton better.

The West Valley is where your soul goes to die. Cave Creek and Carefree have some cool things up there, but would absolutely suck as a single person unless you're a retired snowbird.

I have never found anything redeeming west of the 17 and that comes from someone who is a PHX stan.

Granted I have kids, over 40, and not looking to party every weekend. I do like being up here to get out of Phoenix in the summer. That's my entire motivation for staying up here. I can go to Scottsdale anytime as the 101 is just seconds away. The premise of my original post was the proximity to the north. Chandler/gilbert are just way too far (for my liking) to make an easy exit. It then turned into defending it. I get it, it's not amazing and if you are single or enjoy some variety, anything west of I17 leaves something to be desired. It's home for me. I have little to complain about.

December 18, 20232 yr Most of the action is in Scottsdale, with Gilbert being the new "IT" suburb that has an improving downtown scene. Downtown Phoenix doesn't have too much outside the Ballpark area and Roosevelt Row area, never bothered with Midtown or Uptown so I'm probably missing something there. Biltmore/Arcadia is a nice pocket east of the city that will also make commute to Tempe better, but am ashamed to say I haven't spent too much through there. The best happy hour is at Giligin's in Scottsdale. 4-7pm $3 double wells and $6 pizza. I do some of my best posting from a barstool there. Boondocks is a great place to watch a game, but an Aggie owns it and is a small watch party spot inside, whereas the outside is where the real party goes on. Thirsty Lion is the UT spot but I have not gone to it. Edited December 18, 20232 yr by StassneyHorn
December 18, 20232 yr If you’re not Mormon, don’t live in Gilbert. If you can swing it financially, live in Scottsdale. The people who tell you how much they love living in Chandler, Mesa or Gilbert would much rather be in Scottsdale if they could afford it. Or they are just fucking dorks.
December 19, 20232 yr I always have a good time with degenerates here castawaysaz.com but I wouldn’t want to be neighbors with any of them

December 19, 20232 yr It’s Scottsdale and not fucking close. I don’t understand a lot of the previous answers. I dont know who these bored married Mormons are that keep trying to make Chandler a thing unless you are a pool parts manufacturer that keep you close to them, but you’ll end up in a throuple where the kid calls you “buddy”. Gilbert is fun in a “once a month” kind of way as a change up. Married people love Dierks Bentley bars.

You will save yourself drive time getting out of Phoenix in the summer to go to Prescott/Sedona/flagstaff.Amazing timing on this popping back up. It’s looking like we are relocating to Phoenix in a couple of months. Empty nest so no school consideration. Doesn’t require much in office time but wants community presence/participation. Office is Midtown. Tell me more about Cave Creek/Carefree. Would we end up doing a lot of driving for amenities? We saw a few places that back up to the Tonto National Forest that we loved. Wife liked Old Scottsdale on the recruiting trip. Considering renting in that area while exploring Phoenix. Any RV storage suggestions? We will likely take a slow trip/drive out with the Airstream Basecamp and leave it there so I can then pull a Uhaul with her professional clothes and home basics.

December 20, 20232 yr I feel like Scottsdale is the best suburb because there is always something available to do, in a shorter time than others. Casino, bars, entertainment, hiking available within the city, golf, strip clubs, social/rec sports, and closer to dt Phoenix when you want to swing into the city for a sports game, (best spot for spring training imo). The whole town is seemingly made up of Midwest transplants who are incredibly inviting and fun to mix it up with, combined with rich/gorgeous SoCal women who stay behind after ASU, so everyone is social and willing to meet new people. Then there’s the third group of divorcees that made out well. wherever you pick, don’t adjust to asshole Arizona driving. The only place I consistently see people aggressively driving 60+ mph on city roads that are 45. Edited December 20, 20232 yr by StassneyHorn

I will add that Chandler is a lot more family and since you're a single dude, you're going to be surrounded by people that are at a different stage in life than you are. Keep it relatively centrally located in Scottsdale and you're going to encounter a lot more singles or at least folks that don't have soccer practice in the morning. It's also a much easier drive to the things to do in Central PHX like Suns games, D'Backs games and the good restaurants/bars.

Based on working in midtown, this is the answer I was going to give. At $1.5m or below, you can get into something nice in Lower Arcadia or west of 44th. Close to work, close to Scottdale (it's so close that it's in Scottsdale schools), close to the airport and downtown. Tons of great spots in the neighborhood all within walking or biking distance. I Ioved every minute of living in Arcadia. The only regret I have is selling the house I owned when we moved to Houston in 2019. I would be up an additional 50% had I held on to it.
January 4, 20241 yr Yup arcadia. Homes are unique. Closish to Biltmore and south Scottsdale. Can go hike camelback with a short drive. Paradise valley behind Camelback is pretty sick if you can find something there.
January 4, 20241 yr Another vote for Arcadia, sounds like a great fit for you. And start your way down this list. Chicago Hamburger is one of my personal favs. https://www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/dining/2024/01/03/best-restaurants-in-phoenix-2024/72004165007/
January 7, 20241 yr Arcadia is very nice but y’all are behind on modern prices for it. Even lower Arcadia. I thought someone posted about living by the Sonoran Preserve but can’t find the post. It was our favorite area. We had nice hikes and had food at The Thumb carwash. Old Scottsdale, for the most part, is a giant tourist trap. FnB is a great restaurant. Earning a James Beard was well deserved.

January 7, 20241 yr 1.5 million and $5k are not equal houses. $5k rental is probably around a $900k house.
