Arod to second

I think the solution is A-Rod to 3rd. Duplantier is producing more than Borba offensively.

Interesting thing was Schloss said what Weiner does besides the regular pitcher fielding practice. He also puts his pitchers at shortstop and has them field ground balls to keep up their athleticism. This could be a reason the pitching staff fields their position so well.

He says that this team is always desperate to win, no matter the situation.

He didn't say anything about the injury situations of Belyeu or Williams.

If Jonah Williams is available this weekend does he play LF? You can’t move Mendoza or A-Rod from the DH. Duplantier played great defense and contributed offensively.  The one position on the field that’s a black hole right now is 3B.

A bigger black hole might be a 3rd starting pitcher, especially as we get into June

it amazes me that grubbs can throw 90.  he is completely vertical the whole throw.  it is all arm action.

He generates a lot of torque through his hips.  That's where his power comes from.

Let’s tap the brakes. Congrats to Duplantier on 3 hits on the weekend (one which was a bunt with no one covering first base). He is still hitting .138 in SEC play.

Duplantier is out when Williams is back, and whoever has cooled off between Williams or Borba is likely out whenever Belyeu is ready hopefully in a few weeks. If they both happen to be hot, what a great problem to have and we will get creative with whoever is scuffling at that time.

Rodriguez has also been pretty meh defensively at third base so not sure why we would be eager to stick him back over there with a bruised hand. He is probably most likely out of anyone to slide back to DH once Mendoza can play the field again.

Yes.  By June 1 Regional, we should have:

Mendoza 2B

Flores SS

Galvan C

Belyeu RF

Gasparino CF

Scheussler 1B

Rodriguez DH

Williams LF

Borba 3B

SP Riojas, Harrison, Flores/Duplantier/Bing?

BP Grubbs, Volantis, Burns, Saunier

I might want to see Jonah get to 20 ABs and at least 1 XBH before I decide to give him Farmer's job but maybe that's just me.

I still think Flores is the answer for Sundays, despite what happened last week.

If he's shaky again, I'd consider Grubbs.  Burns has come on and can help cover the bullpen innings.

Agreed.  Totally forgot about him.  Face palm.

Farmer/Williams platoon assuming Williams doesn’t go 0-20 in the next couple weeks.  Farmer has been a much better hitter than Gasparino recently, but no way you sit Gasparino’s defense and potential power.

Could Burns get in the mix for the last starting spot? He started all six appearances at ASU last year before his injury. He threw as many as 118 pitches and 7.0 innings.

Genuine question as I don’t have the baseball knowledge to say it’s a good idea lol

I think we have starters although young and inconsistent to get us through a few innings if possible than go to bullpen which could be burns if needed. Love seeing the smoke he was throwing in the zone more importantly

I like Burns a lot more as a max effort short reliever, but there are worse options to start games.

Regarding Grubbs as third starter… I don’t see how they eff with Grubbs/volantis bullpen unless it’s an elimination game kitchen sink situation.

Burns was a starter last year for ASU. Curious if that will come into play later.

I tend to agree. He hasn’t walked guys like that this season.

I too am curious about how the staff will figure out a third starter, if they decide to pick just one.  I also think that Flores or bing should be able to beat whatever 4 seed they send to Austin, leaving us with our best two starters for what are hopefully our final two games of the regional.

Doing similar for supers or afterward, that would take massive stones.

Also pretty amazing that we have 9, 10 if you count Walker for lefty lefty, reliable arms. Plus Moffet and his potential. What a job Max has done with this staff.

I see no reason to change Grubbs’ role at all. He’s so valuable as an option for multiple games in a weekend. Plus I think his stuff is just better as a reliever. He’s gets a lot of ground balls so he is extremely effective coming in with runners on.

At least the supers (while against supposedly better competition) let a team potentially get by on 2 starters.  Omaha CAN work out that way for some of the bracket, if I recall.

I agree especially with where we are in the standings. We can go 1-2 in our last three series and be 22-8. Arkie and LSU can only lose one game to tie that mark and they play each other. Tennessee can’t lose any and they play Arkansas.

We know what we have in Grubbs. Get some other guys in these spots to prepare for postseason.

The year MissSt won they only had one starter worth a shit.

Burns was a starter last year, but only for about five starts before going down with a season-ending arm injury. Don't mess with a good thing. His stuff seems to play way better in short stints.

You rob Peter to pay Paul if you force him into a Sunday spot. What if you have to use Grubbs and Volantis on a Friday? You know Harrison ain't giving you more than about 5 innings in a game 2 and if Burns is starting game 3 you are then asking Grayson Saunier or Duplantier to be the primary relief arm on a Saturday. Not ideal.

A third starter is huge in Omaha. Think about Kenn Kasparek’s outing in 2005.

Meh. Yea it’s really great to have but not if we are sacrificing a bullpen arm. Two starters can get it done. You need more than 2 bullpen guys.

If the one two punch continues to work well and deep then the bullpen/committee can be the mythical third pitcher...

Do we know for sure what Jonah's injury is?   I was under the impression it was an ankle issue but heard hamstring yesterday.

No release but I think hamstring since hes been out longer than I thought

I know one thing. Bill in Sinton would be pissed. PVA&M is coming in tonight riding a 3-game winning streak. All on the road.

I would sure hope we don’t have Galvan behind the plate tonight and I wouldn’t be opposed to a full day off. Also may not be a bad idea to give Mendoza and Rodriguez full days off to rest what they are dealing with/playing through.

Has Belyeu been healthy enough to swing a bat?  June is a tough time for a hitter start seeing live pitching.

Word is he’s ahead of schedule. Was hoping to see if he can ph in Florida series but I bet they hold him till Oklahoma or postseason

I was thinking Bednar probably pitched very deep in games often that year. Actually he only went 7 innings three times.  Ended up with 92 IP.  By the end of the year, their no. 2 guy (MacLeod) was out of gas and threw 4 shit games in a row.  An afterthought named Harding Houston (?) stepped up and gave them 4 or 5 innings a game until Sims could come in and blow his arm out.  Is Ruger going to be our Bednar?

Not sure if you saw, but Volantis and Grubbs pitched Fri and Sat this weekend. Grubbs even pitched Sun.

If Burns is Sun starter then Flores is your other mid-relief.

Whatever gets decided with the staff, I have full faith in Schloss and Weiner. It's refreshing to have coaches that actually know how to manage pitching.

I did see. We also had to use Burns for 2+ innings on Saturday to bridge the gap to those two because they did pitch on Friday.

I knew they were bad, but holy shit. Best win vs rpi 298 Jackson State. Routinely run ruled vs top 250. Half their wins aren’t d1.

In conference play Grubbs/Volantis have combined for:

45.1 innings - 5 ER - 10 BB - 59 Ks - 0.88 WHIP - 6-0 - 12 Saves

When you have two robots in the back end of your bullpen that can both eat 4-5 innings a weekend and throw up 0s, it allows for “luck” to swing your way like Jalin missing a sign, stealing 3rd, and scoring on a bad throw.

It’s very unusual, especially in college baseball, to have two arms like Volantis and Grubbs in your bullpen and I think a lot of people are having a hard time reasoning with that. The vast majority of programs would have already moved Grubbs and/or Volantis into their rotation.

What was announced on Spencer’s injury?

I know shoulder surgery, but what exactly?

labrum? Rotator cuff? Something else?

I don't think they detailed the injury, just that he had surgery and was done for the year.

Arkansas cancelled their Tuesday game @ Missouri St due to weather.   Forecast does show thunderstorms at game time plus 2 hrs.

Though RPI @ 203 and 23-19 record,  Missouri St is not that bad.   Beat Arkansas in March 14-13 in a 10 inning game and also beat Ok St.   Game may have required Arkansas to go deeper into pitching staff than desired.   And the possible affect on RPI.
