Don't know much about the Chilcutt kid from San Antonio that just decommitted, but he seems to be small.  I saw 5" 8" and 5"9" and about 155-160 lbs.  Not sure how recent that was.  Pretty small for any player, particularly a catcher.  I did a quick search and other than being listed on a couple of the baseball prep sites there is not much information.  Perhaps not much of a loss.

I wonder if Pudge weighed 155 when he was 17 or 18?  He was a 200 pounder in the bigs.

The time for lowered expectations is over.

Ha! 4th round MLB draftees aren’t our standard!!!

This was signee I mentioned the other day that was close to flipping from A&M. It’s done now.

OB said he doesn’t want to publicly make a big deal about it due to the backlash from A&M fans.

A lot of excitement continues to build in Austin, as Jim Schlossnagle and his staff get settled in on the Forty Acres. For those that may have missed it, here’s your coaching lineup, along with the behind the scenes hires that have been made.

Nolan Cain – Associate Head Coach
Troy Tulowitzki – Hitting/Infielders Coach
Max Weiner – Pitching Coach
Drew Bishop – Director of Baseball Operations
Chuck Box – Director of Player Development
Matt Couch – Head Athletic Performance Coach
Tom Mendez – Assistant Athletic Trainer

I spoke with a handful of coaches at the collegiate level to get a feel for what Texas is building and to get their thoughts.

One coach told me that this is exactly what Texas needed for their SEC move and that there was some concern regarding David Pierce’s ability to have the Longhorns ready for their new conference home.

“No one was going to be afraid of Texas due to their downward trajectory,” said one coach. “They had talent, don’t get me wrong, but they weren’t heading in the right direction at all. We began to see that before this year.”

Another coach described this as “the best staff that’s been in Austin in a long, long time” and felt Texas would begin to compete immediately.

“I’m not just blowing smoke when I say this, but some of those guys are the best in the business. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re competing in Omaha next year.”

A former SEC assistant coach also told me he felt Max Weiner could have the biggest impact.

“He’s going to get a lot out of his pitchers,” the coach said. “Texas fans will see a complete 180 from last season in year one. He’s that guy. They should be more excited about him than anyone.”

***

One narrative that’s being pushed, mainly from the Texas A&M side, is that Schlossnagle’s abrupt departure from College Station would affect recruiting.

Those same coaches didn't agree.

“People may not like how it was done, but people like winning. It won’t affect their recruiting in the slightest. Kids want to play for winners,” said one coach.

“Could it have been handled better? Absolutely. Nearly any coach out there is going to make that jump though. Texas is Texas. Anyone who says otherwise is crazy. Kids will go play for him and kids will learn a lot, despite what anyone else wants you to think.”

“He’s the biggest story in baseball this season,” said the former SEC assistant. “Even bigger than winning the College World Series. Every kid out there knows him. They know Texas and the brand. It won’t hurt anything.”

***

Speaking of recruiting, it’s a huge weekend in Austin for Texas Baseball. They’ll be hosting multiple visitors beginning today. While I don’t have an exact number, I can say that it’s in the double digits and that includes both high school and transfer portal players.

As far as the high school prospects go, there will be plenty of elite talent, including players who are currently committed to other schools. I know many of them will arrive at some point today and then actually visit with the coaches and see everything on Sunday.

I am expecting a couple of flips to happen at this time.

***

When it comes to the portal, the Longhorns are hosting a handful of prospects who can come in and make a contribution immediately. That’s what this staff is looking for… difference makers, not depth pieces.

One of those portal prospects is Arizona State’s Ethan Mendoza. Originally from Southlake, Mendoza will begin his visit today. He played 2nd base for the Sun Devils this past season and has already visited both Oklahoma and Arkansas earlier in the week.

Long Beach State’s Myles Patton is another name to keep an eye on. Patton is considered one of the best pitchers in the portal and I’m hearing good things about where the Horns are in that recruitment.

Obviously there are more names out there, but we’ve been asked to keep some things quiet.

I can say this, don’t be surprised if Schloss and Co. go on a run here pretty soon.  For all of you hurt by football recruiting lately, this should ease the pain a little.

***

One of the biggest questions is where things stand when it comes to the MLB Draft and current Longhorns Jalin Flores and Jared Thomas. Some believe they are top 75 guys in the draft and there’s some truth to that.

Longhorn fans are anxious to see if they’ll return, as no official announcement has been made from either.

After speaking with a couple of sources close to the situation, I can say that there’s some growing optimism in Austin that both could return to campus.

“We have a chance with both.”

By no means am I saying they’re here to stay, but the situation is looking better than it did a few weeks ago.

That would be tremendous news for Texas in 2025.

***

Texas’ Max Belyeu has spent the last two weeks making the rounds with USA Baseball’ Collegiate National Team. It sounds like Belyeu turned some heads and made the most of it.

Now Belyeu returns to the always-successful Cotuit Kettleers (Cape Cod League), where he will finish out his summer ball.

Expect Belyeu to be a pivotal piece of next season’s high hopes and expectations.

***

While on the subject of Belyeu, rumors swirled recently that he was thinking about transferring to Texas A&M. Obviously that didn’t happen, but speculation began after numerous players posted things such as “#HookEm” on social media with Belyeu not saying much at all.

Many took those posts as signs those players were ‘coming back,’ but that actually wasn’t the case.

“They were never leaving. It was to show support to the program and the new staff. It wasn’t a matter of ‘I thought I might leave but I’m here.’ It was to say they’re focused and ready to go,” a source told me.

***

Texas will also add numerous players to the roster this fall, as the incoming class gets ready to head to their new home in Austin. Most players will report on August 1st, with the rest coming in shortly after.

***

Many have asked about five-star football prospect Jonah Williams and where things stand in his recruitment. Football may not be a factor, as Williams continues to shoot up boards. A few people have relayed to me that Williams might be the best outfielder in the nation and could get drafted very early.

Obviously he's going to have his options in football from any program in the country, but he may never step foot on campus.

***

Finally, the Longhorns have had some decommitments recently. I’m told that this is because the new staff had other plans and encouraged them to look elsewhere for a home that fits them better.

Well, these back to back make sense.

this is like when i play fifa career mode and i take over some middling french team with a bunch of my overpowered created players + the studs i signed with an inflated budget, only to leave for arsenal after two seasons where i bring 90% of my favorite players with me.

I think they can get Mendoza across the line. That recruitment profiles well for Texas.

Texas is involved with Fisher but like you said, he has a lengthy list is suitors. I don’t think he is one of the ones on campus.

I think one of the guys on campus is this guy https://gamecocksonline.com/sports/baseball/roster/player/connor-mccreery/

Cade Fisher, Liam Doyle, and Grayson Saunier are the most high profile SEC arms that are uncommitted.

After that it’s the Justin Loer and Connor McCreery range.

Thatcher Hurd is out there but he had a rough year last year and I believe he has a “do not contact” attached to his name in the portal

TIL that players get released in the CC League, or any summer league for that matter.

ETA:  I guess over the years I've seen things like "player x is no longer on team y's roster," but never the dreaded "release."

Edited by TwiceHorn

Cade Fisher had a 7.13 ERA this year.  In 59.1 inning he gave up 67 hits (.282 batting average), 6 homeruns, 29 walks, and struck out 76.  He hit 13 batters, only had 3 wild pitches, and no balks.

The Mendoza news is very surprising, as I just recently read on the Gig'Em Gazette that Schlossnagle's recent actions would destroy his recruiting for years to come.

Shirley there is some mistake!

Congratulations,  Coach !    (siap)  (excerpts)

Texas Baseball Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle is one of eight coaches named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class, the organization announced Wednesday.

Schlossnagle and the seven other members of the ABCA Hall of Fame Class of 2025 will be honored and inducted at the ABCA Hall of Fame Banquet, which will be held Friday, January 3, 2025, during the 81st annual ABCA Convention at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Induction to the ABCA Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Schlossnagle is joined by four other Longhorn greats in receiving the honor. Billy Disch, Bibb Falk, Cliff Gustafson and Augie Garrido were all inducted into the ABCA Halll of Fame.

For his career, Schlossnagle has amassed a 946-455 (.675) record over 23 seasons as a head coach, which included an 18-year stint at TCU, three seasons at Texas A&M and two seasons at UNLV.

there's no mistake.  and don't call me Shirley.

also, if early Saturday games at the Disch don't offer a Schlossen-Bagle, we're tearing the program down.  And surely I can be serious.

yeah, and we need to have the pom squad on top of the 1B dugout doing schlossen-kegels during the 7th inning stretch.

Silas, in his final year, was as good as I've ever seen behind the plate in a Texas uniform (over 40 years of watching).

Yep. He was very, very good defensively his junior year.

Offensively, he wasn't bad, either. .271 BA and a .391 OBP. Obviously, not all inclusive of his offensive performance, but those numbers could be much worse for a defensive-minded catcher.

A few quick hitters to start your day.

- Yesterday, by all accounts, went as well as it possibly could. A high school commitment and a portal commitment both went public.

- The commitment of Arizona State’s Ethan Mendoza is huge. He will immediately push for a starting role.

- Flipping Bryce Navarre from Texas A&M was another big time get. One of the top players in the state. His breaking ball is elite and his variety of pitches is nothing short of great.

- More visitors will be on campus today, including prospects currently committed elsewhere.

- Don’t be surprised if something happens today, commitment wise. Not saying it will for sure, but Texas is sitting pretty. That’s all I’ll say there.

- I’ll close with a team note. On Friday, I reported that Will Gasparino was released from his Cape Cod team. The fact of the matter is, he wasn’t doing too hot at all. Not to mention USA Baseball players returned. I’m told that Gasparino has not been happy with his performance this summer (obviously) and will spend the rest of his summer in Austin working on/refining his approach at the plate.

He also just did a lot of great, clutch shit that isn't reflected in any numbers.  The guy was smart, blocked balls in the dirt like a mofo, and seemed to come through in tight situations time and time again.

Regarding Gasparino, his stats were posted above and they were bad.  As stated by Torre "Probably for the best.   He was hitting .083, 24 ABs, 12Ks, 1 HR.    Needs to get in the cage with Tulo."  I had checked on him a day or two before he was released and his stats were about what Torre posted.

When is Tulo allowed to coach him in off-season?

The clutch double play in the ‘21 CWS elimination game against Tennessee comes to mind. If he doesn’t pick that ball out of the dirt from Cam, it becomes a tie ball game with no outs and bases loaded for Tennessee.

He was outstanding, but the best defensive catcher I've seen on the 40 was Kevin Shannon.  He couldn't hit a basketball with a canoe paddle, but his defense and throwing was unmatched, IMO.  He actually squatted on the ground while catching but was quicker than a mongoose back there with a missile launcher of an arm.  His defense was such that he was selected for the USA national team and the Yankees drafted him knowing he couldn't hit.

Would you say he was like or unlike a coach on the field?

1 hour ago, LTtxfan said:

Good question.  That statement said Gasparino was coming back to Austin to work on his hitting but did not elaborate.  I don't know the rules about coaches interacting with players in the off-season when it comes to actual coaching.  I would think he needs to tighten up and shorten that swing a bit.  We had way too many guys this year with high numbers of strikeouts and Gasparino led the pack.  Tulo needs to work with them on anticipating certain pitches, seeing the ball spin better to identify pitches, and doing a better job of protecting the plate with 2 strikes by swinging at close ones but not chasing balls way out of the strike zone.  Many of them tend to chase pitches starting outside that wind up being curve balls so far outside that they are basically unhittable anyway.  I know that big leaguers can have the same problem, but it seemed really prevalent among UT batters this year.
