We're down to six active head coaches with a MBB title (Pitino, Izzo, Self, Calipari, Drew, Hurley).Only three in FBS football. (Mack, Kirby, Dabo)

Health or scandal incoming?

Heart just isn't in it anymore why it went back to SF.

Sources: Virginia athletic staff has been informed that basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring, effective immediately.

More people starting to report this. I hope it’s not some sort of health issue.

#56

He’s getting a press conference tomorrow so it will likely be a health issue and not a scandal. I know he hates NIL but tough it out until April, bro. Unless you physically can’t for some reason

#57
There is no health issue tied to Tony Bennett’s decision to retire on the eve of the 2024-25 season, source confirms to @NBCSports. @GoodmanHoops first reported.

There is no health issue with Tony Bennett in his decision to retire, sources told @TheFieldOf68. There are likely other reasons, but the changing landscape of college basketball over the last couple years cannot be underestimated in his decision.

Yeah that’s chicken shit to bounce on your team in October then

Ran the shot clock all the way down on the off-season before announcing https://t.co/AATmxSQv9o

Yeah something definitely up, you don't just up and walk out a couple weeks before season starts for anything but health or family.

Rumors are that he was ready to retire sooner but timed it like this as he wanted asst. coach Ron Sanchez to get the job and didn't think that would happen if he wasn't given a shot to prove himself. Basically saying he did his coach and friend a solid.

Isn’t that was Calhoun did too?

Shitty move imo... Virginia players likely get stuck with Bennett's assistant as new head coach.

Wonder if some players enter portal and transfer mid-term???

I watched the press conference.  He basically said that he knows that he is no longer the best person to coach in the current environment.  He got choked up quite a few times talking about it.  He mentioned that they will need collective bargaining and a salary cap.  He thought about it at the end of last season, but had to jump right into recruiting, etc. and did not get much of a chance to fully consider it.  Wanted to leave now to give the new guys a couple of weeks to take charge, and he will still be around the program, if they will have him.

When I was in college I did quite a bit of tutoring for middle school and high school kids. I wound up with a few Mormon families as clients, and talking to my dad one day mentioned it and he goes "well - the good thing about the Mormons is that their checks clear".

#BREAKING: Georgetown’s Ed Cooley is the frontrunner to replace Tony Bennett at Virginia, per source.I’m told the two parties are in advanced talks, with UVA’s NIL valuation and brand prestige as major factors. Not a done deal yet, but very, very close.

Excerpt...

A longtime assistant coach, Abdur-Rahim spent time on staffs at Georgia, Texas A&M, Charleston, Georgia Tech and Murray State. While on Tom Crean's staff at Georgia, the Atlanta native helped the Bulldogs sign top-five recruit Anthony Edwards, who went on to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Before Abdur-Rahim left Georgia for Kennesaw State, he called Edwards to get his blessing.

"Signing a guy like Anthony, that's a relationship that had been four years building and in the making. There were people around it that I had real relationships with that trusted myself and the coaching staff at Georgia, that trusted me to be there," Abdur-Rahim said on the "Coaching Origins" podcast in 2022. "Before I accepted the job, I called a few people, I called Anthony and I just said, 'Hey man, I got this opportunity, but if you need me here, I'll stay. I'm perfectly OK with it.'

"I wouldn't have been able to recruit the players that I've recruited if it weren't for those, I call them, real relationships. Whether I got the kid or not. That person over there was going to be OK with me no matter what, and I was going to be OK with them."

Co-signed.

Nothing against Edey, but man, refs gave him the Jordan treatment for his entire run at Purdue.

Watching Edey get to do whatever he wanted on the defensive end while drawing every breathe breathed on him as a foul was a beating.

Yep. Edey elbows you in the face? Foul on you! Shouldn’t have put your face near his elbow

Y'all a bunch of haters.

Dude was on pace for a sweet triple double - points, rebounds and fouls - if they'd just let him play. Fascists.

He'll rewrite the record book.

And rewrite the rule book.

You're fucking Kentucky. A retarded donkey with a rat controlling it's movement under a chef's hat could make the elite eight at UK. Cal was below your program standard. It's like Ryan Day at tOSU minus the title.
